Brake Pads and Rotors - Front - Set (Remove and Replace)

Correction code 33010905 1.02 NOTE: Unless otherwise explicitly stated in the procedure, the above correction code and FRT reflect all of the work required to perform this procedure, including the linked procedures.   • 2024-1-24: Add caution on making sure the front brake pad clip is properly installed.
  • 2023-3-24: Moved brake pedal pumping to before reservoir level check, and added precautionary steps for fluid spillage.

Remove

  1. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  2. Place absorbent material underneath the brake booster and the brake fluid reservoir area.
  3. Clean the area around brake fluid reservoir, and then remove the brake reservoir cap.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  5. Remove both front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  6. Remove the bolt that attaches the brake hose to the LH front knuckle.
  7. Remove the brake pad anti-rattle clips from the LH front brake caliper.
  8. Remove the LH front brake caliper from the LH front knuckle.

    Note
    Hang the brake caliper from the body of the vehicle with S-hooks.
  9. Remove the brake pads from the LH front caliper.
  10. Use a caliper spreader kit or similar tool to gently push the pistons back into the LH front brake caliper.
  11. Clean the LH front brake caliper with a nylon brush.
  12. Use a hand brush and soapy water to clean the anti-rattle springs.
  13. If installed, remove and discard the bolt that attaches the brake rotor to the hub.

    Note
    A new bolt will not be installed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  14. Repeat step 6 through step 13 for the RH side of the vehicle.

Install

  1. Position the LH front rotor to the knuckle assembly.
  2. Apply an even layer of Silaramic lubricant to the LH brake pad contact points.
  3. Install the brake pads to the LH front caliper.
  4. Remove the S-hook and install the LH front brake caliper onto the LH front knuckle.

    2x bolts, 21mm, 135 Nm
  5. Install the brake pad anti-rattle clips to the LH front brake caliper.

    CAUTION
    Make sure the brake pad clip rests on the brake pad bevel as pictured. Reposition or replace the brake pad clip as needed.
  6. Install the bolt that attaches the brake hose to the LH front knuckle.

    1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm
  7. Repeat step 1 through step 6 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  8. Install both front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Pump the brake pedal repeatedly until firm to seat the brake pads against the rotors.
  11. Check brake fluid level and top off the reservoir, if necessary.

    Note
    If the brake fluid level is above the Max line, remove the extra brake fluid.
  12. Install the brake reservoir cap.
  13. Remove the absorbent material from underneath the brake booster and brake fluid reservoir area.
  14. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  15. Perform a vehicle road test using a series of ABS-active stops and make sure proper brake pedal feel and performance is achieved.
