Steering Column (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Remove the LH and RH middle A-pillar trims. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the LH and RH instrument panel end caps. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  4. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  5. Remove the phone dock. See Phone Dock - Center Console (Remove and Replace).
  6. Remove the IP service panel. See Service Panel - Instrument Panel (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the touchscreen. See Touchscreen (HW3) (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the IP decor. See Decor - Instrument Panel - Main (Remove and Replace).
  9. Release the clips (x4) that attach the IP closeout panel to the vehicle.
  10. Remove the LH IP trim. See Trim - Middle - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  11. Remove RH IP trim. See Trim - Middle - Instrument Panel - RH (Remove and Replace).
  12. Remove the RH footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Passenger (Remove and Replace).
  13. Remove the RH knee air bag. See Knee Airbag - Front Passenger (Remove and Replace).
  14. Remove the glove box. See Glove Box (Remove and Replace).
  15. Remove the LH footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  16. Remove the LH knee air bag. See Knee Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  17. Remove the steering yoke/wheel. See Steering Yoke/Wheel (Remove and Replace).
  18. Remove the gap hider. See Gap Hider - Steering Column - Upper (Remove and Replace).
  19. Remove the lower steering column shroud. See Shroud - Lower - Steering Column (Remove and Replace).
  20. Disconnect the electrical connector from the steering column control module (SCCM).

    Note
    Remove the retaining clip on the connector and release connector, then remove the remaining broken clip from connector. Discard the retaining clip after removal. The original installed retaining clip is black and the replacement clip is orange.
  21. Remove the bolt that attaches the SCCM to the steering column.

    CAUTION
    Carefully slide the module away from the steering column without rotating the module.
  22. Remove the lower instrument panel assembly. See Instrument Panel - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  23. Raise the vehicle fully.
  24. Remove the front aero shield. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  25. Remove the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  26. Remove the bolt that attaches the steering gear to the steering column.
  27. Slide the steering column upward to remove it from the steering gear assembly.
  28. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  29. Disconnect the electrical connecter from the steering column.
  30. Remove the nuts (x4) that attach the upper steering column to the IP carrier.
  31. With the help of an assistant, remove the steering column from the vehicle.

Install

  1. Transfer the lower steering column shroud datum to the new steering column.
  2. Install the upper steering column to the IP carrier

    4x nuts, 13mm, 15 Nm
  3. Connect the steering column electrical connector and position the harness to the clip.
  4. Raise the vehicle fully.
  5. Slide the steering column on to the steering gear and install the bolt that attaches the steering column to the steering gear.

    1x bolt, 13mm, 30 Nm
  6. Install the front skid plate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  7. Install the front aero shield. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  8. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  9. Install the lower instrument panel assembly. See Instrument Panel - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  10. Install the SCCM to the steering column.

    CAUTION
    Carefully slide the module on the steering column without rotating the module.
  11. Connect the SCCM electrical connector.

    Note
    Install a new orange retaining clip to the connector, and then install the SCCM connector. Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the connector is seated properly.
  12. Install the lower steering column shroud. See Shroud - Lower - Steering Column (Remove and Replace).
  13. Install the gap hider. See Gap Hider - Steering Column - Upper (Remove and Replace).
  14. Install the steering yoke/wheel. See Steering Yoke/Wheel (Remove and Replace).
  15. Install the LH knee air bag. See Knee Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  16. Install the LH footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  17. Install the glove box. See Glove Box (Remove and Replace).
  18. Install the RH knee air bag. See Knee Airbag - Front Passenger (Remove and Replace).
  19. Install the RH footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Passenger (Remove and Replace).
  20. Install the RH IP trim. See Trim - Middle - Instrument Panel - RH (Remove and Replace).
  21. Install the LH IP trim. See Trim - Middle - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  22. Position the clips (x4) that attach the IP closeout panel to the vehicle.

  23. Install the IP decor. See Decor - Instrument Panel - Main (Remove and Replace).
  24. Install the touchscreen. See Touchscreen (HW3) (Remove and Replace).

  26. Install the phone dock. See Phone Dock - Center Console (Remove and Replace).
  27. Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  28. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  29. Connect to the vehicle with a laptop equipped with Toolbox 3. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  30. Select ‘Actions’ and search for ‘SCCM’.
  31. Select ‘SCCM UDS ECU RESET’, click ‘Run’, and allow the routine to complete. Select 'X' at the top of the window upon completion.
  32. Select ‘Actions’ and search for ‘STEERING’.
  33. Select ‘STEERING COLUMN CALIBRATION’, click ‘Run’, and allow the routine to complete. Select 'X' at the top of the window upon completion.
  34. Disconnect Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  35. Install the LH and RH instrument panel end caps. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  36. Install the LH and RH middle A-pillar trims. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  37. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
