Knee Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace)

Replace

Remove

  1. Move the driver seat fully rearwards.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  4. Remove the driver footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove and discard the patch bolts (x2) that attach the driver knee airbag assembly to the instrument panel.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 2 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • External Torx E10
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
  6. Release the tabs (x6) that attach the driver knee airbag assembly to the instrument panel, and then partially lower the airbag.

    CAUTION
    The driver knee airbag is still connected to the vehicle. Be careful not to damage the electrical connectors when lowering the airbag from the instrument panel.
  7. Disconnect the light and OBD2 electrical connectors (x2) and then maneuver the airbag assembly so that it is resting on the floor and center console.

    CAUTION
    The driver knee airbag is still connected to the vehicle. Be careful not to damage the electrical connector or harness.
  8. Disconnect the electrical connector from the airbag assembly:
    • If the electrical connector has white tabs on each side of the connector, use a 90-degree pick to pull the farside tab while using a trim tool to pull the nearside tab and then release the connector from the airbag.
    • If the electrical connector has a locking tab on the rear of the connector, use a 90-degree pick at the beveled corner of the tab to pull the tab away from the connector and then release the connector from the airbag.
  9. Remove and discard the patch bolts (x2) that attach the brace to the driver knee airbag cover.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 2 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • External Torx E10
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
  10. Remove and discard the patch bolts (x4) that attach the driver knee airbag cover to the airbag, and then separate the cover from the airbag.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 2 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • External Torx E10
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter

Install

  1. Attach the driver knee airbag to the knee airbag cover, and then secure them with new patch bolts (x4).
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 2 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • External Torx E10
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
  2. Install new patch bolts (x2) that attach the brace to the driver knee airbag cover.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 2 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • External Torx E10
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
  3. While supporting the driver knee airbag assembly, connect the electrical connectors (x3).

    CAUTION
    Carefully connect the airbag electrical connector to prevent damage to the electrical connectors.
  4. Hook the tabs (x6) before putting the driver knee airbag onto the instrument panel, and then seat the airbag to the instrument panel.
  5. Install the new patch bolts (x2) that attach the driver knee airbag to the instrument panel.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 2 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • External Torx E10
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
  6. Install the driver footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  7. Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  8. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  9. Return the driver seat to its original position.
