Knuckle - Suspension - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace)

Reuse

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift
  2. Release the parking brake caliper. See Park Brake Caliper - Release.
  3. Remove the LH rear wheel center cap.
  4. Loosen the LH rear axle nut.
  5. Remove the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  6. Remove the LH rear brake caliper and rotor. See Brake Rotors - Rear - Set (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the LH rear hub. See Hub - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the LH rear brake dust shield. See Shield - Dust - Brake - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  9. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors (x2) and harness from the LH rear active dampener.
  10. Release the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the LH rear knuckle.
  11. Remove the bolt that attaches the wheel speed sensor to the LH rear knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
  12. Disconnect the LH rear ANC sensor, then remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear ANC sensor to the knuckle.

    CAUTION
    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.
  13. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear knuckle harness bracket to the vehicle, and then move the electrical harness aside with the bracket.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
  14. Remove the nut that attaches the LH rear air spring module to the knuckle.

    Do not remove the bolt at this time.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  15. Remove the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear upper fore link to the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  16. Remove the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear toe link to the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  17. Remove the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear lower fore link to the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  18. Remove the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear upper aft link to the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  19. Remove the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear lower aft link to the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  20. Remove the bolt that attaches the air strut to the knuckle, and then remove the LH rear knuckle from vehicle.

Install

  1. Clean the outboard side of the axle shaft and apply no more than one gram of Molykote M-77 to the axle shaft.
  2. Install the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear lower aft link to the knuckle.

  3. Install the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear toe link to the knuckle.

  4. Install the nut and bolt that attaches the LH lower fore link to the knuckle.

  5. Install the nut and bolt that attaches the LH upper fore link to the knuckle.

  6. Install the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear upper aft link to the knuckle.

  7. Install the nut and bolt that attaches the LH rear air spring module to the knuckle.

    Note
    This bolt will be torqued at a later step.
  8. Install the LH rear brake shield. See Shield - Dust - Brake - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  9. Install the LH rear hub. See Hub - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  10. Install the LH rear brake rotor and caliper. See Brake Rotors - Rear - Set (Remove and Replace).
  11. Hand-tighten the axle nut and new washer that attach the halfshaft to the rear hub.

    The axle nut will be torqued at a later step.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  12. Install the hub jack adapter onto LH rear hub using the lug nuts.
  13. Position and raise the support stand to simulate LH rear suspension ride height.
  14. Measure the distance from the upper fore link to the bolt on the frame rail to make sure LH suspension is set to ride height.

    Distance should be 85mm +/- 5mm.
  15. Torque the bolt that attaches the LH rear toe link to the knuckle and mark it with a paint pen.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  16. Torque the bolt that attaches the LH rear upper fore link to the knuckle and mark it with a paint pen.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  17. Torque the bolt that attaches the LH rear lower aft link to the knuckle and mark it with a paint pen.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  18. Torque the bolt that attaches the LH rear lower fore link to the knuckle and mark it with a paint pen.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  19. Torque the bolt that attaches the LH rear upper aft link to the knuckle and mark it with a paint pen.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  20. Torque the bolt that attaches the LH shock to the knuckle and mark it with a paint pen.
    140 Nm (103.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  21. Lower the support stand until the suspension is unladen, then remove it from the vehicle.
  22. Remove the hub jack adapter from the hub.
  23. Route and install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear knuckle harness bracket to the knuckle.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
  24. Install the bolt that attaches the LH rear ANC sensor to the knuckle.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  25. Connect the electrical harness to the LH rear ANC sensor.

    CAUTION
    Push the red locking tab into the connector to engage the connector lock.
  26. Install the bolt that attaches the wheel speed sensor to the LH rear knuckle.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
  27. Position the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the LH rear knuckle.
  28. Connect the electrical harness to the LH rear active dampener.
  29. Install the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  30. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  31. Torque the axle nut.
    245 Nm (180.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  32. Install the LH rear wheel cap, aligning the valve stem with the wheel cap.
  33. Touch and hold the 'Park' on the vehicle display to release EPB service mode.
  34. Remove the vehicle from the 2-post lift.
  35. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
