Brake Pads - Front (Ceramic Brakes) (Remove and Replace)

Procedure

  1. Prepare the vehicle for raising. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.

    Set air suspension to "Jack Mode".
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the window.
  3. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  4. Place absorbent material underneath the brake reservoir area.
  5. Clean area around the brake fluid reservoir and remove the brake reservoir cap.
  6. Remove both front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  7. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake hose bracket to the LH front knuckle.
  8. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH front brake line to the LH front air spring module.
  9. Remove and discard the LH front brake pad retaining pins.
  10. Remove the bolts the attach the LH front brake caliper to the the knuckle.

    Note
    Hang the caliper to the upper control arm with an S-hook.
  11. Install a shop rag onto the LH front brake disk.
  12. Remove the brake pads from the LH front caliper.
  13. Fully push the pistons back into the LH front brake caliper.
  14. Remove the brake pad anti-rattle clip from the LH front brake caliper.
  15. Clean the LH front brake caliper.

    Note
    If necessary, only use nylon brush.
  16. Remove the abutment pads (x2) from the LH front brake caliper.
  17. Clean the abutment pads area on the LH front brake caliper.

    Use IPA wipes to clean the area, allow 1 minute dry time.
  18. Install the abutment pads (x2) to the LH front brake caliper.

    Note
    Peel off the backing and install the pads with approximately 1 mm distance to the edge. Make sure double sided tape mates onto the caliper.
  19. Clean the front brake pads.

    Clean the back side of the pads with IPA and allow 1 minute dry time. Make sure pads are on a clean surface.
  20. Install Sticky Shim Kit onto the front brake pads.

    Peel off the backing prior to installation, center out the clips to the sticky shim. Make sure double sided tape mates onto the brake pad.
  21. Install a new brake pad anti-rattle clip onto the LH front brake caliper.
  22. Position the front brake pads into the LH front brake caliper.

    Note
    Fold tips of the backing, position pad clips onto pistons. Do not fully press, and do not apply any lubricant.
  23. Position the LH front brake pad retaining pins.

    Fully push the pins by hand, don't use tools. Do not apply any lubricant.
  24. Install the front brake pads to LH front brake caliper.

    Note
    Peel off the backing and verify Sticky Shim has not moved from the pads. Push pads onto the pistons. Make sure that the anti-rattle clip is installed correctly.
  25. Remove the shop rag from the LH front brake disk.
  26. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the LH front knuckle.
    135 Nm (99.6 lbs-ft)

    Note
    Take care not to damage the brake disk.
  27. Install the LH front brake pad retaining pins.
  28. Install the bolt that attaches the LH front brake line to LH front air spring module.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
  29. Install the bolt that attaches the brake hose bracket to the LH front knuckle.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
  30. Repeat steps 7 to 29 on the front RH side of the vehicle.
  31. Torque the LH and RH front wheel nuts.
    175 Nm (129.1 lbs-ft)
  32. Install the LH and RH front arachnid lug nut covers.

    Note
    Align cap with the valve stem.
  33. Pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure pedal feels normal.
  34. Check the brake fluid level and top off the reservoir as necessary.
  35. Install the brake fluid reservoir cap.
  36. Remove absorbent material from underneath the brake reservoir area.
  37. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  38. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode (Enable and Disable).
  39. Burnish the brakes and verify proper brake pedal feel and performance.
