Halfshaft - Rear Drive Unit - LH (Remove and Replace)

  1. Open LH front door
  2. Lower LH front window
  3. Raise and support vehicle

    Set air suspension to "Jack Mode" if equipped
  4. Place the vehicle into EPB Service Mode. See Park Brake Caliper - Release.
  5. Remove LH rear wheel center cap

  6. Loosen the LH rear axle nut

    1x nut, 32mm, 245 Nm
  7. Remove LH rear wheel cap

    Lift every other spoke at a time until cap is released from rim
  8. Loosen LH rear wheel

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
  9. Raise vehicle partially and lower onto locks

    Set vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side
  10. Remove LH rear wheel

  11. Disconnect EPB harness connector to the LH caliper motor

    1x connector, Disengage locking tab then release connector
  12. Release subframe harness from LH rear active dampener

    2x connectors, 1x grommet
  13. Release harness clip from LH rear knuckle

  14. Remove wheel speed sensor from LH rear knuckle

    1x bolt, T30, 5 Nm
  15. Release connector to LH rear ANC sensor

    1x connector, Disengage red locking tab and push down on black tab to release
  16. Release subframe harness from LH lower control arm

  17. Remove bolts securing LH rear knuckle harness bracket and move aside

    2x bolts, T30, 5 Nm, Move harness aside with bracket
  18. Release LH rear brake hose from LH rear lower control arm

    1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm
  19. Release LH rear stabar link from rear knuckle assembly

    1x nyloc nut, 15mm, 55 Nm, Break nut loose then counter-hold ball joint with 5mm hex, Discard after removal
  20. Remove LH rear brake caliper from LH rear knuckle and hang from body

    2x bolts, E18, 125 Nm, Route caliper hose so that it does not get caught on stabar assembly
  21. Remove axle nut and discard washer securing LH rear drive axle to hub assembly

    If washers are not present, procure a set so they can be installed later in this procedure.

    1x nut, 32mm, 245 Nm
  22. If installed, remove and discard the bolt that attaches the brake rotor to the hub.

    A new bolt will not be installed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  23. Install the hub puller onto the LH rear brake rotor

  24. Use hub puller to free LH rear halfshaft from hub splines
  25. Remove hub puller from LH rear hub assembly

  26. Remove rotor from LH rear knuckle
  27. Remove nut securing LH rear air spring module to LH rear knuckle

  28. Remove bolt securing LH rear upper fore link to knuckle

    Recommend assistance, Support knuckle as needed, Remove bolt holding knuckle to air strut and remove knuckle assembly
  34. Release LH inboard CV joint from RDU and remove from vehicle

    1x U-bolt, 2x nuts, 10mm, Torque hand-tight, Wrap cable around inner joint, then tighten with U-bolt, Use slide hammer with cable eyelets to release, To avoid damage to the halfshaft boots and oil seals, exercise caution when removing
  35. Position halfshaft into vehicle for installation

  36. Install LH inboard CV joint into RDU

    Recommend assistance, Remove axle seal plug if necessary, Caution not to damage the axle seal during installation, Carefully push the halfshaft into the drive unit until there is an audible "click" from the halfshaft stub contacting the pinion shaft
  37. Apply Molykote M-77 to outboard side of LH axle shaft

    Clean if necessary, Apply no more than 1 gram to axle only
  38. Position LH rear knuckle for installation

    Recommend assistance, Place knuckle into vehicle for installation, If required, use a bolt or punch to temporarily hold knuckle in place, Remove pin punch when fasteners for the links are ready to be installed
  39. Align the splines of the LH rear halfshaft with those of the LH rear hub, and then install the halfshaft into the hub.
  40. Install only the axle nut onto the halfshaft, and then use a ratchet and socket to manually tighten the nut to pull the halfshaft into the hub until it seats.

    Do not use power tools to tighten the nut as it might strip the threads.
  41. Remove the axle nut from the halfshaft, install a new washer onto the halfshaft, and then reinstall the axle nut hand tightened.

  48. Position rotor onto LH rear knuckle
  49. Install new axle nut and washer assembly

  50. Install hub jack adapter onto LH rear hub

  51. Position and raise support stand to simulate LH rear suspension at ride height
  52. Measure the distance from the upper fore link to the bolt on the frame rail to make sure LH suspension is set to ride height

  72. Lower vehicle until tires are touching the ground

  73. Torque LH rear wheel

  77. Hold brake pedal and select park on UI to disable EPB service mode
  78. Remove vehicle from lift

    Lower rack arms fully and remove them from under vehicle, Remove air suspension from "Jack Mode"
