Oil Filter - Rear Drive Unit (Plaid) (Remove and Replace)

Drain

  1. Raise and support vehicle.

    Set air suspension to "Jack Mode" if equipped.
  2. Using laptop connect to vehicle with ethernet diag kit and Toolbox 3.

    Open Toolbox 3 website and establish connection to the vehicle, https://toolbox.teslamotors.com, For local connection issues with Toolbox 3 refer to article #43695, Media converter box is powered by laptop using USB, Ethernet connection will provide communication.
  3. "Select ‘Actions’ tab and search for ‘PROC_DIREL_X_OIL-PUMP-DRAIN-CONTROLSearch for routine in ToolboxPERFORMANCE-REAR Drive Unit Oil Pump Drain Control’".
  4. "Select ‘Performance-Rear Drive Unit Oil Pump Drain Control’, click ‘Run’, and allow routine to complete.

  5. Raise vehicle fully and lower lift onto locks.

    Set vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side.
  6. Remove clips securing mid aero shield.

    4x push clips.
  7. Remove bolts securing mid aero shield and remove from vehicle.

    16x bolts, 10mm, 6 Nm.
  8. Position oil drain container under RDU drain valve.
  9. Remove bolts securing oil filter cover to RDU.

    2x bolts, EP10, 5 Nm + 20 degrees.
  10. Remove oil filter assembly from RDU.

    Note
    Carefully insert plastic wedge between oil filter cover and RDU, in small increments work the wedge between oil filter cover until green O-ring is visible, remove oil filter by hand, residual oil will drain from housing, allow oil to drain.

    Tesla recommends that the oil filter is replaced with a new one upon removal. Any oil filter with visible corrosion or leaks must be replaced.
  11. Placeholder - Set up step ladder to access vehicle to run toolbox routine.
  12. Re-establish vehicle connection to Toolbox 3.

    Open Toolbox 3 website and establish connection to the vehicle. https://toolbox.teslamotors.com, Select connection status icon at top right corner, and select connect locally (icon will turn green when vehicle is connected).

  15. Drain the gearbox fluid from the rear drive unit.
  16. Remove filter from oil filter cover.

    3x tabs, turn oil filter clockwise or counter-clockwise to release from oil filter cover.

Refill

  1. Install filter onto oil filter cover.

  2. Install oil filter assembly into RDU.

    Tesla recommends that the oil filter is replaced with a new one upon removal. Any oil filter with visible corrosion or leaks must be replaced.
  3. Install bolts securing oil filter cover to RDU.

    2x bolts, EP10, 5 Nm + 20 degrees.
  4. Remove fill plug from RDU.

    1x plug, 8mm Allen, 15 Nm.
  5. Inspect seals and O-rings.

    1x O-ring, Inspect O-rings on removed, if damaged o-ring on plug replace affected plug.
  6. Set up fill kit with KAF1 gearbox fluid.

    Fill measuring container to 4 liters/4000 mL.

    Install fitting into fill plug port then insert transfer pump hose into fitting, Tub fitting is under development for service.
  8. Set up fill process.

    Place measured fluid container in drain basket, fully submerge input hose, prime pump with KAF1 gearbox fluid.

  11. Pump KAF1 gearbox fluid into the rear drive unit.
  12. Remove transfer pump fitting from fill hole and Install fill plug into RDU.

  13. Remove oil drain container.
  14. Apply Loctite 222 onto mid aero shield bolts and install fasteners securing mid aero shield to vehicle.

    16x bolts, 10mm, 6 Nm.
  15. Install clips securing mid aero shield.

  16. Lower vehicle fully.

    Raise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered.
  17. Disconnect Toolbox 3 from vehicle and remove laptop and ethernet diag kit.
