HVAC Assembly (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Open all four doors
  2. Lower LH and RH front windows
  3. Turn the HVAC on, turn the A/C off , and set the blower speed to 10. Set the temperature to HI and run for 10 minutes.

    This will clear most of the oil out of the cabin condenser
  4. While waiting to finish the previous step, remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).

    Do not remove the frunk seal.
  5. Turn off the HVAC and let it sit for 1 minute.

    Make sure both compressor and blower are off, this allows refrigerant inside cabin condenser to return to the accumulator
  6. Turn the HVAC back on, turn the A/C on, set the blower speed to 10 and the Temperature to LO, and run the HVAC for 10 minutes.

    This step will clear most of the oil out of the evaporator
  7. While waiting to finish the previous step, perform the substeps listed below. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge).
    1. Turn on the A/C machine.
    2. Flush the hoses.
    3. Remove the cowl screen panel.
  8. Turn off the A/C and blower motor.
  9. Fully recline both front seats, and move them fully rearward.
  10. Adjust steering column fully rearward and fully down.

    Via UI > Controls > Steering , Use left steering wheel scroll wheel to adjust steering column
  11. Perform the substeps listed below to recover the A/C refrigerant. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge).
    1. Run the Toolbox refrigerant fill/drain routine.
    2. Disconnect LV power.
    3. Remove the wiper module.
    4. Recover the A/C refrigerant.
  12. While the refrigerant is being recovered, remove the center console assembly. See Center Console Assembly (Remove and Replace).
  13. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach HVAC penta line to the bulkhead and HVAC assembly.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • 10 in extension
  14. Remove the bolt that attaches the HVAC assembly to the bulkhead.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
    • 6 in extension
  15. Remove the bolts that attach the upper steering column bracket to the bulkhead.
    27 Nm (19.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm deep socket
    • 6 in extension
  16. Remove the IP sub-assembly. See Sub Assembly - Instrument Panel (Remove and Replace).
  17. Remove the cross car beam from the vehicle. See Cross Car Beam (Remove and Replace).
  18. Disconnect HVAC blower connector x059 and HVAC case connector x058 from the RH body controller.

    Note
    Release the harness clip for access.
  19. Release LH and RH rear vent ducts from HVAC assembly.
  20. Remove the bolt that attaches the HVAC assembly to the bulkhead.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
    • 6 in extension
  21. Remove the HVAC assembly from the vehicle.

    Note
    Remove HVAC assembly towards rear of vehicle. Rotate counter clockwise and remove out of passenger front door. Assistance recommended.

Install

  1. Install the HVAC assembly to vehicle.

    Install front of HVAC assembly through passenger front door. Rotate counter clockwise and install towards front of vehicle.
  2. Install the bolt that attaches the HVAC assembly to the bulkhead.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
    • 6 in extension
  3. Install the bolt that attaches the HVAC assembly to the bulkhead.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm deep socket
    • 6 in extension
  4. Replace the seal washers (x5) on the HVAC side of the penta line.

    Lube seal washers with ND-11 oil
  5. Position the penta line on the bulkhead and HVAC assembly, and then install bolts (x2) that attach the penta line to HVAC assembly.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • 10 in extension
  6. Perform the substeps listed below to start the A/C recharge process. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge).
    1. Connect the A/C machine hoses to the vehicle.
    2. Make sure the refrigerant fill/drain routine is active.
    3. Add vacuum to the system and perform a leak test for 15 minutes.
    4. Begin the refrigerant recharge.
  7. Install LH and RH rear vent ducts to HVAC assembly
  8. Connect HVAC blower connector x059 and HVAC case connector x058 on the RH body controller.

    Install the harness clip.
  9. Install the cross car beam, IP sub-assembly, and all interior parts except for the center console. See Cross Car Beam (Remove and Replace).

    The center console and underhood parts will be installed in later steps.
  10. Connect the First Responder Loop and LV battery connector.

    Note
    Secure FRL first. Seat LV battery connection and push black connector lock inwards to secure. Engage upper locking tab when fully seated.
  11. Perform the substeps listed below to finish the A/C recharge process. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge).
    1. Enable Service Mode via touchscreen.
    2. Stop the thermal fill/drain routine.
    3. Run the heat pump commissioning routine.
    4. Perform the Hose Equalize steps as instructed by the A/C machine.
    5. Install the caps (x2) on the underhood A/C service ports.
    6. Run the post-repair thermal system routines (x3).
    7. Install all underhood and wiper components.
  12. Install the center console. See Center Console Assembly - 1st Row (Remove and Install).
  13. Adjust the steering column back to its original position.

    Via UI > Controls > Steering. Use the left steering wheel scroll wheel to adjust steering column.
  14. Calibrate the rear doors.

    If the "Calibration Needed" message appears on the vehicle touchscreen, touch and hold Calibrate to calibrate the rear doors.
