Cooling Fan Module (Remove and Replace)

Correction code 18309802 1.30 NOTE: Unless otherwise explicitly stated in the procedure, the above correction code and FRT reflect all of the work required to perform this procedure, including the linked procedures. Do not stack correction codes unless explicitly told to do so. NOTE: See Flat Rate Times to learn more about FRTs and how they are created. Remove

  1. Open the LH front door.
  2. Lower the LH and RH front windows.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  4. Turn the steering wheel fully to the right.
  5. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  6. Remove the front fascia assembly. See Fascia Assembly - Front (Remove and Install).
  7. Disconnect the active grille shutter actuator connector.

    Note
    Release the connector locking tab to disconnect.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Pocket screwdriver
  8. Disconnect the ambient air temperature sensor connector, and then release the grommet that attaches the sensor to the front end carrier.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Plastic trim tool
    • Pocket screwdriver
  9. Raise the vehicle partially and lower onto locks.

    Note
    Set the vehicle to comfortable working height. Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side.
  10. Place a fluid catcher below the LH front side of the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Fluid catcher - 1080568-00-A
  11. Release the spring clips (x2) that attach the radiator inlet and outlet hoses to the top LH side of the radiator, disconnect the hoses, and then allow coolant to drain.

    Note
    Plug the hoses and radiator as needed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Coolant hose plug kit - 1135762-00-A
    • Pick radiator hose soft grip 10.30in
  12. Place a fluid catcher below the RH front side of the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Fluid catcher - 1080568-00-A
  13. Release the spring clips (x2) that attach the radiator inlet and outlet hoses to the top RH side of the radiator, disconnect the hoses, and then allow coolant to drain.

    • Pick radiator hose soft grip 10.30in
  14. Raise the vehicle fully and lower lift onto locks.

    Note
    Set the vehicle to comfortable working height. Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side.
  15. Disconnect the LH and RH cooling fan module connectors (x2).

    Release the connectors after coolant hoses are plugged to avoid coolant damaging the connectors.
  16. With assistance, remove the bolts (x2) that attach the cooling fan module to the front end carrier, and then remove the cooling fan module from the vehicle.

    Note
    Gently place the cooling fan module on a flat surface with the fans facing downwards.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  17. Release the locking tabs (x12) and clips (x2) that attach the active grille shutter to the cooling fan module, and then remove the active grille shutter from the cooling fan module.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Pick radiator hose soft grip 10.30in

Install

  1. Position the active grille shutter on the cooling fan module, and then install the locking tabs (x12) and clips (x2) that attach the active grille shutter to the cooling fan module.

    Note
    Gently place the new cooling fan module on a flat surface with the fans facing downwards. Align the datums before engaging the tabs.
  2. With assistance, position the cooling fan module on the vehicle, and then install the bolts (x2) that attach the cooling fan module to the front end carrier.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  3. Connect the LH and RH cooling fan module connectors (x2).
  4. Lower the vehicle partially and set lift onto locks.

    Note
    Raise lift off locks, and then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered. Set the vehicle to comfortable working height.
  5. Position the radiator inlet and outlet hoses on the top RH side of the radiator, and then install the spring clips (x2) that attach the hoses to the radiator.

    Note
    Remove plugs from both ends of each hose. Perform push-pull-push test to make sure the hoses are fully seated.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Coolant hose plug kit - 1135762-00-A
  6. Place a fluid catcher below the LH front side of the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Fluid catcher - 1080568-00-A
  7. Position the radiator inlet and outlet hoses on the top LH side of the radiator, and then install the spring clips (x2) that attach the hoses to the radiator.

    Note
    Remove plugs from both ends of each hose. Perform push-pull-push test to make sure the hoses are fully seated.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Coolant hose plug kit - 1135762-00-A
  8. Remove the fluid catcher from under the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Fluid catcher - 1080568-00-A
  9. Install the grommet that attaches the ambient air temperature sensor to the front end carrier, and then connect the sensor connector.
  10. Connect the active grille shutter actuator connector.

    Note
    Engage the connector locking tab.
  11. Remove the coolant bottle cap.
  12. Fill coolant to the proper level.

    Ensure the fluid level is filled to the Max line.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flashlight LED
    • Inspection mirror, rectangular
  13. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.

    Note
    Raise lift off locks, and then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered.
  14. Install the front fascia assembly. See Fascia Assembly - Front (Remove and Install).
  15. Connect toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  16. In toolbox 3, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, and type "Purge" into the search field.
  17.     Note
    • Make sure the vehicle is not in drive state. Putting the vehicle into drive state will stop this routine.
    • Routine is still running despite the stop message.
    • Coolant pumps will be audible.
    • Test lasts approximately 10 minutes.
    • Monitor levels as required.
  18. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary.

    Ensure the fluid level is filled to the Max line.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flashlight LED
    • Inspection mirror, rectangular
  19. Install the coolant bottle cap.
  20. In Toolbox 3, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, and type "Thermal" into the search field.
  21. Select Heat Pump Thermal System Performance TestTEST-SELF_VCFRONT_X_HEAT-PUMP-THERMAL-PERFORMANCEModelY/tasks/TEST-SELF_VCFRONT_X_HEAT-PUMP-THERMAL-PERFORMANCELow Voltage Controllers, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

    Note

  22. Disconnect toolbox 3 and remove laptop from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  23. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  24. Calibrate the rear doors.

    Note
    If the "Calibration Needed" message appears on the vehicle touchscreen, touch and hold Calibrate to calibrate the rear doors.
  25. Press the brake pedal to turn on the drive rails.
  26. Turn the steering wheel back to center position.
  27. Lower the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  28. Raise the LH and RH front windows.
  29. Close the LH front door.
