Charge Port Voltage Check
Correction code 44012100 NOTE: Unless otherwise explicitly stated in the procedure, the above correction code and FRT reflect all of the work required to perform this procedure, including the linked procedures. Do not stack correction codes unless explicitly told to do so. NOTE: See Flat Rate Times to learn more about FRTs and how they are created. To provide feedback on FRT values, email LaborTimeFeedback@tesla.com. NOTE: See Personal Protection to make sure proper PPE is worn when performing the below procedure.
- 1083188-00-A FLUKE DIGITAL MULTIMETER 179
- 1130480-00-A Test Probes, Slim, Fluke TP38
- 2023-08-24: Made procedures consistent across vehicle lines.
Only
technicians who have been trained in High Voltage Awareness and
have completed all required certification courses (if applicable) are permitted to
perform this procedure. Proper personal protective equipment
(PPE) and insulating HV gloves with a minimum rating
of class 0 (1000V) must be worn at all times a high voltage
cable, busbar, or fitting is handled. Refer to Tech Note TN-15-92-003, High Voltage Awareness Care Points
for additional glove and safety
information.
- North America: HV gloves can be used up to 12 months after the testing date printed on the glove, but only 6 months after first use even if the gloves are still within the 12 month period. If the gloves were not put into service during the 12-month period following the testing date, they must be retested before being put into service.
- Europe: HV gloves have no expiration date and may be used if they pass the pressure assessment and the periodic inspection.
- Asia Pacific: Follow the
expiration date stated by the HV glove manufacturer, and:
- o China only: Test the gloves every 6 months according to GB/T 17622.
Procedure (Single-Phase)
- Open the charge port door.
- Open the LH rear door or liftgate.
- Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
-
Set the multimeter to measure DC
voltage, touch the probes to the LV auxiliary battery terminals, and verify that the
mulitimeter displays a voltage of 14 to 16 volts.
CAUTIONGently touch the probes to the battery terminals as to avoid damaging the terminals.CAUTIONIf the voltage across the LV auxiliary battery terminals is less than 14 volts or greater than 18 volts, the multimeter is not measuring reliably and must not be used. Use only a fully functional multimeter.
- Remove all loose articles and jewelry from your person.
- Put on safety glasses, High Voltage (HV) insulating gloves, and leather glove protectors.
- Prepare the multimeter with slim test probes.
-
Use the multimeter to check voltages
at charge port terminals B+ and B-.
NoteTouch the probes to the sides of the terminals, not the tips.WarningIf the voltage reading is greater than 10V, the HV battery contactors are closed or welded. Stop this procedure and escalate a Toolbox session, as appropriate.
- Prepare the multimeter with the black alligator clip on the negative lead, and then ground the alligator clip to the LH rear door latch striker or the liftgate striker.
-
Use the multimeter to check voltages
at B+ and ground, and at B- and ground.
NoteTouch the probe to the sides of the terminals, not the tips.WarningIf the voltage reading at either location is greater than 10V, the HV battery contactors are closed or welded. Stop this procedure and contact Service Engineering.
- If all previous charge port voltage readings were less than 10V, remove the multimeter ground connector from the LH rear door latch striker or the liftgate striker and return to the procedure that specified the charge port voltage check.
Procedure (Three-Phase) (Except China)
- Open the charge port door.
- Open the LH rear door or liftgate.
- Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).

-
Use the multimeter to check voltages
at the lower 4 terminals of the charge port AC connector.
NoteIf the terminals are from left to right, a, b, c, and d, then measure ab, ac, ad, bc, bd, and cd.NoteTouch the probes to the sides of the terminals, not the tips.WarningIf any voltage reading is greater than 10V, the HV battery contactors are closed or welded. Stop this procedure and contact Service Engineering.
