Subframe Assembly - Rear (Plaid) (Remove and Install)

Remove

  1. Move the vehicle to a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  3. Release the electronic parking brake. See Park Brake Caliper - Release - Toolbox.
  4. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  5. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  6. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  7. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  8. Set the high voltage multimeter to DC voltage, lightly touch the probes to the auxiliary battery connector contacts, and verify that the multimeter displays a voltage.

    Note
    Battery voltage is typically 14.5 to 15.5 volts.
  9. Remove the rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  10. Remove the mid aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Mid (Remove and Replace).
  11. Perform the vehicle electrical isolation procedure. See Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure.
  12. Remove the leather glove protectors and HV insulating gloves.
  13. Remove the rear fascia diffuser. See.
  14. Remove the nut that attaches the rear drive unit ground strap to the body stud, and then remove the ground strap from the stud.
  15. Disconnect the electrical harness from the LH rear active damper connectors (x2) and release the grommet that attaches the electrical harness to the damper.
  16. Release the connector red locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical harness from the LH electronic parking brake motor connector.
  17. Release the fir tree clip that attaches the electrical harness to the LH lower control arm.
  18. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear jounce hose to LH rear lower control arm, and then separate the jounce hose from the control arm.
  19. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH rear stabilizer bar link to the rear stabilizer bar, and then remove the link from the stabilizer bar.

    Note
    To prevent ball joint damage, use a 5 mm Allen wrench to prevent the LH link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut.
  20. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear knuckle.
  21. Remove the LH rear brake caliper from the LH rear knuckle, and then hang the caliper from an S-hook.

    Route the jounce hose so that it does not get caught on the stabilizer bar.
  22. If the retention screw is missing from the LH rear rotor, remove the rotor from the LH rear hub.

    Without the retention screw in place, the rotor might fall off the hub in subsequent steps.
  23. Remove the nut that attaches the LH rear active damper to the LH rear knuckle.

    Do not remove the bolt.
  24. Position a coolant drain collector underneath the LH rear of the HV battery.
  25. Release the clips (x4) that attach the lower front of the LH rear wheel arch liner to the LH wheel fairing, and move the liner aside for access.
  26. Release the clip that attaches the powertrain coolant supply hose to the LH rear casting, release the clip and disconnect the powertrain coolant supply hose from the powertrain coolant side sill supply hose, and then immediately plug both fittings.

    Use a clean shop towel to wipe up any spilled coolant.
  27. Repeat step 15 through step 26 for the RH side of the vehicle.

    On the RH side, there is the powertrain coolant return hose and the powertrain coolant side sill return hose.
  28. Remove the coolant drain container from underneath the vehicle.
  29. Remove the LH and RH rear subframe shear plates. See Shear Plate - Rear Subframe - LH (Remove and Replace).
  30. Release the connector red locking tabs, and then disconnect the rear subframe electrical harness connectors (x4) from the main electrical harness.
  31. Release the clip that attaches the rear subframe electrical harness from the LH wheel well.
  32. Slide the red connector locking tab, open the black release lever, and then disconnect the rear drive unit LH HV harness from the HV battery.

    Note
    Repeat for the rear drive unit RH HV harness.
  33. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the rear stabilizer bar to the rear subframe, and then remove the stabilzer bar from the subframe.
  34. Position the subframe lift underneath the rear subframe.
  35. Connect the supply air hose to the subframe lift.
  36. Raise the subframe lift to the vehicle subframe, and preload.

    Note
    If the vehicle is too high, lower the subframe lift, lower the vehicle, and then raise the subframe lift.
  37. Route a ratchet strap between the rear drive unit and the subframe lift, and then use the ratchet strap to secure the drive unit to the lift.
  38. Loosen, but do not remove the bolts (x4) that attach the rear subframe to the body.
  39. Use a power tool to remove the bolts (x4) that attach the rear subframe to the body.
  40. Slightly lower the subframe lift to unload the rear active dampers.
  41. Remove the bolt attaching the LH rear active damper to the LH rear knuckle.

    Adjust the subframe lift height as necessary to relieve loading on the bolt.
  42. Remove the bolt attaching the RH rear active damper to the RH rear knuckle.

  43. With the help of an assistant, fully lower the subframe lift.

    CAUTION
    Move and tilt the subframe lift as it is lowered to make sure that the coolant hoses don't get caught, or that the HV battery is damaged by the front motor mount of the rear subframe.
  44. Disconnect the supply air hose from the subframe lift.
  45. Move the rear subframe out from under the vehicle.

Install

  1. Move the rear subframe under the vehicle.
  2. Connect the supply air hose to the subframe lift.
  3. With the help of an assistant, carefully raise the subframe into position and align the rear active dampers to their respective knuckles.

    Move and tilt the subframe lift as it is raised to make sure that the coolant hoses don't get caught, or that the HV battery is damaged by the front motor mount of the rear subframe.
  4. Install the bolt to attach the LH rear active damper to the LH rear knuckle.

    Adjust the subframe lift height as necessary to ease installation of the bolt. Do not install the nut at this time.
  5. Install the bolt to attach the RH rear active damper to the RH rear knuckle.

  6. Raise the subframe lift until the subframe just makes contact with the body, and then use the power tool to install the bolts (x4) that attach the rear subframe to the body.
  7. Tighten the bolts (x4) that attach the rear subframe to the vehicle.
    175 Nm (129.1 lbs-ft)
  8. Release the ratchet strap that secures the rear drive unit to the powertrain lift, and then remove the strap from the lift.
  9. Completely lower the subframe lift, disconnect the supply air hose, and then move the subframe lift out from under the vehicle.
  10. Verify that the black release lever of the LH rear drive unit HV harness connector is in the open position, install the connector flat and square to the HV battery LH HV header, secure the release lever to the closed position, and then slide the red connector locking tab.

    Repeat for the RH rear drive unit HV harness.
  11. Install the rear stabilzer bar to the rear subframe, and then install the bolts (x4) that attach the stabilizer bar to the subframe.
    30 Nm (22.1 lbs-ft)
  12. Fasten the clip that attaches the rear subframe electrical harness to the LH wheel well.
  13. Connect the rear subframe electrical harness connectors (x4) to the main electrical harness, and then fasten the connector red locking tabs.
  14. Install the LH and RH rear subframe shear plates. See Shear Plate - Rear Subframe - LH (Remove and Replace).
  15. Position a coolant drain collector underneath the LH rear of the HV battery.
  16. Remove the plugs from both fittings and immediately connect the powertrain coolant supply hose to the powertrain coolant side sill supply hose, fasten the clip and perform a Push-Pull-Push check of the fittings, and then fasten the clip that attaches the powertrain coolant supply hose to the LH rear casting.

    Use a clean shop towel to wipe up any spilled coolant.
  17. Return the lower front of the LH rear wheel arch liner to the LH wheel fairing, and then fasten the clips (x4) that attach the liner to the fairing.
  18. Install and hand-tighten the nut that attaches the LH rear active damper to the LH rear knuckle.

    The nut is torqued in a later step.
  19. If previously removed, install the LH rear rotor to the LH rear hub.
  20. Remove the LH brake caliper from the S-hook, and then install the caliper onto the LH rear knuckle.

    Route the jounce hose so that it does not get caught on the stabilizer bar.
  21. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear knuckle.
    125 Nm (92.2 lbs-ft)
  22. Install the LH rear stabilizer bar link into the rear stabilizer bar, install a new nut to attach the link to the stabilizer bar, and then mark the nut with a paint pen after tightening.
    55 Nm (40.6 lbs-ft)

    Note
    To prevent ball joint damage, use a 5 mm Allen wrench to prevent the link ball joint stud from turning while installing the nut.
  23. Install the LH rear jounce hose to the LH rear lower control arm, and then install the bolt that attaches the jounce hose to the control arm.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
  24. Fasten the fir tree clip that attaches the electrical harness to the LH lower control arm.
  25. Connect the electrical harness to the LH electronic parking brake motor connector, and then fasten the connector red locking tab.
  26. Fasten the grommet that attaches the electrical harness to the damper, and then connect the electrical harness to the LH rear active damper connectors (x2).
  27. If installed, remove and discard the bolt that attaches the brake rotor to the hub.

    A new bolt will not be installed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  28. Install the hub jack adapter onto the LH rear hub, and then install and hand-tighten the nuts (x5) that attach the adapter to the hub.

    The hydraulic hub tool can used if the hub jack adapter is not available.
  29. Use a support stand under the hub jack adapter to raise the LH rear suspension to a simulated ride height.
  30. Adjust the support stand so that the vertical distance from the bottom of the LH rear casting to the center of the LH rear halfshaft is 85 mm +/- 5 mm.

  31. If loosened for other procedures, tighten the nut and bolt that attach the LH toe link to the LH rear knuckle, and then mark with a paint pen after tightening.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
  32. If loosened for other procedures, tighten the nut and bolt that attach the LH upper fore link to the LH rear knuckle, and then mark with a paint pen after tightening.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
  33. If loosened for other procedures, tighten the nut and bolt that attach the LH upper aft link to the LH rear knuckle, and then mark with a paint pen after tightening.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
  34. Tighten the bolt that attaches the LH rear active damper to the LH rear knuckle, and then mark with a paint pen after tightening.
    150 Nm (110.6 lbs-ft)
  35. Lower and remove the support stand from under the hub jack adapter.
  36. Remove the nuts (x5) that attach the hub jack adapter to the LH rear hub, and then remove the adapter from the hub.
  37. Repeat step 15 through step 36 for the RH side of the vehicle.

    On the RH side, there is the powertrain coolant return hose and the powertrain coolant side sill return hose.
  38. Install the rear drive unit ground strap to the body stud, and then install the nut that attaches the ground strap to the stud.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
  39. Install the rear fascia diffuser. See.
  40. Install the mid aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Mid (Remove and Replace).
  41. Install the rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  42. Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  43. Engage the electronic parking brake. See Park Brake Caliper - Release - Toolbox.
  44. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  45. Perform a cooling system air purge. See Cooling System (Partial Refill and Bleed).
  46. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  47. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  48. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  49. Hold the LH and RH B-pillar upper buttons in the close position to manually calibrate the LH and RH falcon wing doors.
  50. Remove the vehicle from the 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  51. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
