Backlight Glass (Remove and Install)

CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

Remove

  1. Remove the lower liftgate trim. See Trim - Liftgate - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the liftgate speaker grille. See Grille - Speaker - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the liftgate upper trim. See Trim - Upper - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the RH active spoiler catch basin cover. See Cover - Catch Basin - Active Spoiler - LH (Remove and Replace).
  5. Release the clip, and then disconnect the CHMSL electrical connector.

    Release the clip from the liftgate assembly.
  6. Remove the LH active spoiler catch basin cover. See Cover - Catch Basin - Active Spoiler - LH (Remove and Replace).
  7. Disconnect the defroster grid and antenna electrical connectors (x4) located on the LH and RH side of the backlight glass.
  8. Close the liftgate.
  9. Apply masking tape to areas around the liftgate and the active spoiler to prevent damage to the vehicle.
  10. Remove the spoiler applique. See Applique - Spoiler (Remove and Install).
  11. Clean and remove excess urethane from the surface of the spoiler lower wing assembly.
  12. Release the CHMSL electrical harness from the lower spoiler wing assembly.
  13. Clean and remove excess urethane from underneath of the passive spoiler upper wing.

    Place passive spoiler upper wing onto a soft surface and carefully remove the excess urethane.
  14. Remove the screws (x4) that attach the passive spoiler assembly.

    T30. Torque 6 Nm.
  15. Open the liftgate.
  16. Remove the LH pushpin clips (x3) that attach the liftgate side pinch sensor.
  17. Remove the RH pushpin clips (x3) that attach the liftgate side pinch sensor.
  18. Disconnect the upper rear liftgate pinch strip connector on the LH side of the rear liftgate.

    Tape the harnesses to the liftgate to secure aside.
  19. Remove the front liftgate pinch sensor from backlight glass.

    Pinch sensor is adhered with double sided tape.
  20. Use equalizer blade to cut the adhesive on the top portion of backlight glass on liftgate assembly.
  21. Cut an appropriate length of square wire.
  22. Insert the wire starter through the adhesive near one of the upper corner.

    Pull the wire through and remove the wire installer tool from the liftgate glass.
  23. Close the liftgate with an assistant inside.
  24. Connect the T-handles to the wire.
  25. Use T-handles to cut the urethane securing the backlight glass to the liftgate.

    CAUTION
    Use protective material to prevent damage.
  26. With an assistant, attach suction cups (x2) to the backlight glass, and then lift up to remove the backlight glass from the liftgate assembly.

    1 suction cup each side.

Install

  1. Clean and remove the old adhesive from the backlight frame.
  2. Remove the masking tape from the liftgate assembly.
  3. Inspect the backlight glass for any damage that is not serviceable.

    Replace the backlight glass if there is any damage that cannot be rectified. Damages include cracked glass and damaged heater grid.
  4. Remove the urethane bead from the backlight glass.
  5. Use an IPA wipe to clean the urethane path on the backlight glass assembly.

    Allow 1 minute for dry time.
  6. Apply the primer onto the backlight glass assembly.
  7. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane.

    Opening must be 8 mm wide and 14 mm tall.
  8. Apply the urethane following the primer path on the backlight glass assembly.
  9. Install suction cups (x2) onto the backlight glass assembly.

    1 suction cup on each side of the backlight glass.
  10. With an assistant, install the backlight glass onto the liftgate assembly.

    Locating pins (x2).
  11. Check the gap and flush measurements.

    Use the current CVIS specifications.
  12. Apply tape to secure the backlight glass to the body while the urethane cures.
  13. Remove the suction cups from the backlight glass assembly.
  14. Install the screws (x4) that attach the spoiler assembly.

    T30. Torque 6 Nm.
  15. Install the spoiler applique. See Applique - Spoiler (Remove and Install).
  16. Open the liftgate.
  17. Connect the defroster grid and antenna electrical connectors (x4) on RH and LH sides.
  18. Install the clip and connect the electrical harness to the CHMSL assembly.

    Secure the clip onto the liftgate assembly.
  19. Install the LH active spoiler catch basin cover. See Cover - Catch Basin - Active Spoiler - LH (Remove and Replace).
  20. Apply adhesive promoter to the rear upper edge of the liftgate glass.

    Allow it to dry to the touch.
  21. Position the pinch sensor through the upper liftgate, and then set into place.

    Make sure the connector is on the left side of the vehicle and align the sensor end with the sensor carrier. Peel the red backing from the double sided tape piece for piece while installing.
  22. Remove the adhesive tape backing from the pinch sensor, and then start attaching the sensor onto the rear liftgate glass.

    Start on the right side moving to the left.
  23. Connect the front liftgate pinch sensor to the LH side pinch sensor assembly.
  24. Install the LH pushpin clips (x3) that attach the liftgate side pinch sensor.
  25. Install the RH pushpin clips (x3) that attach the liftgate side pinch sensor.
  26. Install the liftgate upper trim. See Trim - Upper - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  27. Install the liftgate speaker grille. See Grille - Speaker - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  28. Install the lower liftgate trim. See Trim - Liftgate - Lower (Remove and Replace).
