Hub - Front - LH (Remove and Replace)

Replace

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Remove the LH front wheel cap.
  3. Loosen the LH front axle nut.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  4. Remove the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  5. Remove and discard the nut and washer that attach the LH front halfshaft to the hub.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  6. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH front brake caliper to the knuckle, and then carefully hang the caliper with an S-hook.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  7. If installed, remove and discard the bolt that attaches the brake rotor to the hub.

    Note
    A new bolt will not be installed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  8. Install the hub puller to the LH front brake rotor.
  9. Use the hub puller to release the LH front halfshaft from the hub assembly, then remove the hub puller from the vehicle.
  10. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the LH front hub to the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm deep socket
  11. Remove the LH front hub and bearing assembly from vehicle.

Install

  1. Check the tone ring on the front hub assembly prior to installation.

    Note
    Use the magnetic field viewing card to ensure that the magnetic field on the tone ring is not damaged. Refer to Toolbox Article 28542 for further information on checking the tone ring, https://toolbox.teslamotors.com/articles/28542
  2. Clean the outboard side of the axle shaft and apply no more than one gram of Molykote M-77 to the axle shaft.
  3. Line up the splines on the halfshaft and position the front hub assembly to the knuckle.
  4. Install the bolts (x4) that attach the LH front hub to the knuckle.
    90 Nm (66.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm deep socket
  5. Position the brake rotor on the hub, and then hand-tighten the nut and new washers that attach the halfshaft to the hub.

    This nut will be torqued later in the procedure.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  6. Remove the LH front brake caliper from the S-hook, position the caliper on the knuckle, and then install the bolts that attach the caliper to the knuckle.
    135 Nm (99.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  7. Install the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  8. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  9. Torque the LH front axle nut.
    245 Nm (180.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  10. Install the LH front wheel cap, aligning the valve stem with the wheel cap.
  11. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  12. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
