Subframe Assembly - Front (Remove and Install)

Remove

  1. Move the vehicle to a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  4. Set the steering wheel straight ahead.
  5. Place a protector sheet onto the driver seat, and then install the steering wheel lock.
  6. Remove the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  7. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the front fascia valance. See Valance - Front Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove the front skid plate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  10. Slide the red locking tab, press the release, and then disconnect the electrical connectors (x2) from the steering rack.
  11. Slide the red locking tabs, press the releases, and then disconnect the electrical connectors (x2) from the EPAS CAN.
  12. Release the clips (x3) that attach the electrical harness to the front subframe, separate the electrical harness from the subframe, and then tuck it up and aside.
  13. Remove the bolt that attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack input shaft.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  14. Slide the steering column intermediate shaft up and off of the steering rack input shaft.
  15. Pull the red tab, and then pull the red tab a second time to disconnect the electrical harness from the LH ANC sensor connector.
  16. Release the clips (x2) that attach the LH ANC connection to the LH front knuckle.

    Note
    Route the electrical harness above the front stabilizer bar.
  17. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH front stabilizer bar link to the front stabilizer bar, and then remove the link from the stabilizer bar.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 15 mm socket
    • 5 mm hex

    Note
    To prevent ball joint damage, use a 5mm hex wrench to prevent the LH link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut.
  18. Remove the nut and bolt that attach the LH front active damper to the front lower aft link.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench
  19. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH aft link to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the aft link from the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 22 mm socket
    • Torx T45 socket

    Note
    To prevent ball joint damage, use a T45 socket to prevent the LH aft link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut.
  20. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH fore link to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the fore link from the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 22 mm socket
    • Torx T45 socket

    Note
    To prevent ball joint damage, use a T45 socket to prevent the LH fore link ball joint stud from turning while removing the nut.
  21. Remove and discard the nyloc nut that attaches the LH tie rod to the LH front knuckle, and then remove the tie rod from the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  22. Repeat step 15 through step 21 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  23. Break loose the front, middle, and rear bolts (x6) of the front subframe, but do not remove the bolts at this time.

    Note the characteristics of the bolt heads
    • Front bolts - 16 mm or 18 mm heads
    • Middle bolts - 18 mm heads
    • Rear bolts - 21 mm heads
  24. Remove the rear bolts (x2) from the front subframe with a battery-powered drill.

    CAUTION
    Note the length of the bolts, either 58 mm or 67 mm. This length will determine the torque spec.
  25. Remove the bolts (x2) from the short spar of the subframe fixture (1066521-00-A, 1657054-00-A).

    Note
    The bolts will interfere with the subframe if they are not removed. Return the bolts to the subframe fixture when finished with this procedure.
  26. Move the subframe lifting tool to underneath the front subframe area.
  27. Connect the shop supply air to the subframe lifting tool.
  28. With the help of an assistant, raise the powertrain table and subframe fixture into position.

    Note
    The lower aft links will rest on the fixture.
  29. Remove the front and middle bolts (x4) from the front subframe with a battery-powered drill.

    Take note of bolt head size for installation later.
    • Front bolts - 16 mm or 18 mm heads
    • Middle bolts - 18 mm heads
  30. With the help of an assistant, carefully lower the front subframe from the body.

    Hold the knuckles aside, and guide the active damper forks around suspension links.
  31. Disconnect the shop supply air from the subframe lifting tool.
  32. Move the subframe lifting tool and front subframe out from under the vehicle.

Install

  1. Move the subframe lifting tool and front subframe in to under the vehicle.
  2. Connect the shop supply air to the subframe lifting tool.
  3. With the help of an assistant, carefully raise the front subframe into the vehicle.

    Hold the knuckles aside, and guide the active damper forks around suspension links.
  4. Install and hand-tighten the front and middle bolts (x4) of the front subframe.

    • Front bolts - 16 mm or 18 mm heads (M12 1.75x75 bolt (1063242-00-B) and M12x24x2.5 washer (1103852-00-A) or just M12-1.75x115 bolt (1608611-00-C ))
    • Middle bolts - 18 mm heads
  5. Use a battery powered drill to run up the bolts, but do not tighten fully.

    The bolts will be fully tightened in a later step.
  6. Lower the subframe lift, disconnect the shop supply air, and move the lift out from under the vehicle.
  7. Install and hand-tighten the rear bolts (x2) of the front subframe.

    21 mm heads (M14 2.0x58 (1133941-00-C) or M14 2.0x67 (1638540-00-A))
  8. Use a battery powered drill to run up the bolts, but do not tighten fully.

    The bolts will be fully tightened in a later step.
  9. Fully tighten the front subframe bolts.

    Torque specs
    • Front bolts, 16 mm head - 80 Nm
    • Front bolts, 18 mm head - 80 Nm
    • Middle bolts - 80 Nm
    • Rear bolts, 58 mm long - 115 Nm
    • Rear bolts, 67 mm long - 145 Nm
  10. Install the LH tie rod into the LH front knuckle, and then install a new nyloc nut to attach the tie rod to the knuckle.
    102 Nm (75.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
  11. Install the LH fore link to the LH front knuckle, and then install a new nyloc nut to attach the fore link to the knuckle.
    180 Nm (132.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 22 mm socket
    • Torx T45 socket

    Note
    To prevent ball joint damage, use a T45 tool to prevent the LH fore link ball joint stud from turning while installing the nut.
  12. Install the LH aft link to the LH front knuckle, and then install a new nut to attach the aft link to the knuckle.
    180 Nm (132.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 22 mm socket
    • Torx T45 socket

    Note
    To prevent ball joint damage, use a T45 tool to prevent the LH aft link ball joint stud from turning while installing the nut.
  13. Install and hand tighten the nut and bolt that attach the LH front active damper to the front lower aft link.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 21 mm combination wrench

    Note
    The nut and bolt will be torqued during the alignment check.
  14. Install the LH front stabilizer bar link into the front stabilizer bar, and then install a new nyloc nut that attaches the link to the stabilizer bar.
    70 Nm (51.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 15 mm socket
    • 5 mm hex

    Note
    To prevent ball joint damage, use a 5 mm hex wrench to prevent the LH link ball joint stud from turning while installing the nut.
  15. Fasten the clips (x2) that attach the LH ANC connection to the LH front knuckle.
  16. Connect the electrical harness to the LH ANC sensor connector, and then push in the red locking tab to secure the connection.
  17. Repeat step 10 through step 16 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  18. Slide the steering column intermediate shaft down and onto the steering rack input shaft.
  19. Install the bolt that attaches the steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack input shaft.
    30 Nm (22.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  20. Connect the electrical harness to the EPAS CAN connectors (x2), and then slide the red locking tabs.
  21. Connect the steering rack electrical connectors (x2), and then slide the red locking tab.
  22. Bring the electrical harness to the front subframe, and then fasten the clips (x3) that attach the electrical harness to the subframe.
  23. Install the front skid plate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  24. Install the front fascia valance. See Valance - Front Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  25. Install the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  26. Install the LH and RH front wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  27. Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  28. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  29. Remove the steering wheel holder from the vehicle.
  30. Remove the vehicle from the 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  31. Calibrate the rear doors.

    Note
    If the "Calibration Needed" message appears on the vehicle touchscreen, touch and hold Calibrate to calibrate the rear doors.
  32. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
