Knuckle - Suspension - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Set air suspension vehicle ride height to "Low".

  2. Prepare to raise vehicle.

    Set air suspension to "Jack Mode", Position lift arm pads on vehicle jack pads, DO NOT position the lift arm pads under the battery or side rails, as shown in red.
  3. Use Toolbox to place the vehicle into EPB Service Mode. See Park Brake Caliper - Release - Toolbox.
  4. Remove LH rear wheel center cap.

  5. Loosen the LH rear axle nut.

  6. Loosen LH rear wheel.

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm.
  7. Raise vehicle partially and lower onto locks.

    Set vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side.
  8. Remove LH rear wheel.

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm.
  9. Disconnect EPB harness connector to the LH caliper motor.

    1x connector, Disengage locking tab then release connector.
  10. Release subframe harness from LH rear active dampener.

    2x connectors, 1x grommet.
  11. Release harness clip from LH rear knuckle.

  12. Remove wheel speed sensor from LH rear knuckle .

    1x bolt, T30, 5 Nm.
  13. Release connector to LH rear ANC sensor.

    1x connector, Disengage red locking tab and push down on black tab to release.
  14. Remove LH rear ANC sensor.

    1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm.
  15. Release chassis harness from LH lower control arm bracket.

    1x fir tree clip.
  16. Remove bolts securing LH rear knuckle harness bracket and move aside.

    2x bolts, T30, 5 Nm, Move harness aside with bracket.
  17. Release LH rear brake hose from LH rear lower aft link.

    1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm.
  18. Release LH rear stabar link from rear knuckle assembly.

    1x nyloc nut, 15mm, 55 Nm, Break nut loose then counter-hold ball joint with 5mm hex, Discard after removal.
  19. Remove LH rear brake caliper from LH rear knuckle and hang from body.

    2x bolts, E18, 125 Nm, Hang caliper from body if not fully removing, Route caliper hose so that it does not get caught on stabar assembly.
  20. Remove axle nut and discard the washer securing LH rear drive axle to hub assembly.

    If washers are not present, procure a set so they can be installed later in this procedure.

    1x nut, 32mm, 245 Nm.
  21. If installed, remove and discard the bolt that attaches the brake rotor to the hub.

    A new bolt will not be installed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  22. Install the hub puller onto the LH rear brake rotor.

    5x lug nuts, 21mm, Hand tight.
  23. Use hub puller to free LH rear halfshaft from hub splines.
  24. Remove hub puller from LH rear hub assembly.

  25. Remove rotor from LH rear knuckle.
  26. Remove bolts securing LH rear driven hub to knuckle assembly .

  27. Remove LH rear driven hub from knuckle assembly.

    Caution: A magnetic field from a pick-up tool or magnetic parts tray could permanently damage the magnetic pattern on the hub/bearing tone ring, Place hub on a non-magnetic surface.
  28. Remove LH rear brake shield from vehicle.

    3x bolts, T30, 8 Nm .
  29. Remove nut securing LH rear air spring module to LH rear knuckle.

    1x nut, 21mm, 150 Nm, Do not remove the bolt.
  30. Remove bolt securing LH rear upper fore link to knuckle.

  31. Remove bolt securing LH rear toe link to knuckle.

    Recommend assistance, Support knuckle as needed, Remove bolt holding knuckle to air strut and remove knuckle assembly.

Install

  1. Apply Molykote M-77 to outboard side of LH axle shaft.

    Clean if necessary, Apply no more than 1 gram to axle only.
  2. Position LH rear knuckle for installation.

    Recommend assistance, Place knuckle into vehicle for installation, If required, use a bolt or punch to temporarily hold knuckle in place, Remove pin punch when fasteners for the links are ready to be installed.
  3. Install bolt securing LH rear lower aft link to knuckle.

  4. Install bolt securing LH rear toe link to knuckle.

  5. Install bolt securing LH lower fore link to knuckle.

  6. Install bolt securing LH upper fore link to knuckle.

  7. Install bolt securing LH rear upper aft link to knuckle.

  8. Install bolt securing LH rear air spring module to LH rear knuckle.

    1x bolt, 1x nut, 21mm, 150 Nm, Recommend assistance, Use shop towel and prevent marring on the air spring module, Line up air spring module with knuckle utilizing pry bar, Torque at later step.
  9. Install LH rear brake shield.

    3x bolts, T30, 8 Nm .
  10. Clean mating surfaces of the rear driven hub and wheel speed sensor.

    Clean area of any debris or grease, Ensure a clean surface for reading of wheel speed sensor, Allow 1 minute for IPA to dry.
  11. Check the tone ring on hub and bearing assembly prior to installation.

    Use the magnetic field viewing card to ensure that the magnetic field on the tone ring is not damaged, Refer to toolbox article 28542 for further information on checking the tone ring.
  12. Position LH rear driven hub for installation into knuckle and start threads for the bolts.

    4x bolts, 15mm, 90 Nm, Correctly line up and guide axle splines through the hub, Recommend assistance, Hold down hub flush to the knuckle while someone threads in the hub bolts.
  13. Fully torque LH rear driven hub assembly.

    4x bolts, 18mm, 90 Nm, Tighten down hub evenly and diagonally, Do not damage or bend axle, Axle splines should be correctly fitted before tightening down the hub.
  14. Position rotor onto LH rear knuckle.
  15. Hand-tighten axle nut and new washers that attach the halfshaft to the rear hub .

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  16. Install hub jack adapter onto LH rear hub.

    5x lug nuts, 21mm, Hand tight, Use modified hydraulic hub tool if correct adapter is not available.
  17. Position and raise support stand to simulate LH rear suspension at ride height.
  18. Measure the distance from the upper fore link to the bolt on the frame rail to make sure LH suspension is set to ride height.

  19. Torque bolt securing LH rear toe link to knuckle.

  30. Route and install bolts securing LH rear knuckle harness bracket .

  31. Secure subframe harness to LH lower aft arm.

  39. Lower vehicle until tires are touching the ground.

  40. Torque LH rear wheel.

  41. Torque LH rear axle nut.

  42. Install LH rear wheel center cap.

    1x cap, Verify emblem is aligned with valve stem.
  43. Hold brake pedal and select park on UI to disable EPB service mode.
  44. Remove vehicle from lift.

    Lower rack arms fully and remove them from under vehicle, Remove air suspension from "Jack Mode".
  45. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
