Bushing - Rear Drive Unit - RH (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Move the vehicle to a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  4. Set the high voltage multimeter to DC voltage, lightly touch the probes to the auxiliary battery connector contacts, and verify that the multimeter displays a voltage.

    Note
    Battery voltage is typically 14.5 to 15.5 volts.
  5. Remove the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace)
  6. Remove the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  8. Remove the rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  9. Remove the mid aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Mid (Remove and Replace).
  10. Perform Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure. See Vehicle HV Disablement Procedure.
  11. Remove the rear fascia diffuser. See Diffuser - Rear Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  12. Remove the rear subframe. See Subframe Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
  13. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the rear subframe stiffener to the rear subframe, and then remove the stiffener from the subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  14. Remove the bolt and release the clips (x2) that attach the ground strap to the rear drive unit and rear subframe, and then remove the ground strap from the subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  15. Pull on red release tab, pull tab again to disconnect the rear subframe electrical harness from the rear drive unit resolver connector, release the clips (x2) that attach the electrical harness to the RH side of the rear drive unit, and move the electrical harness aside.
  16. Press the locking tab, disconnect the rear subframe electrical harness from the logic connector, release the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the LH side of the rear drive unit, and move the electrical harness aside.
  17. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH ride height sensor arm to the LH upper fore link.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  18. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH upper aft link to the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  19. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH upper fore link to the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  20. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH toe link to the rear subframe.

    Note
    Support the knuckle while removing.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  21. Install the axle removal tool around the inner joint of the LH rear halfshaft.

    Note
    Make sure that the cable loop is not wrapped around the inner boot.
  22. Use the slide hammer to release the LH rear halfshaft from the rear drive unit.
  23. Repeat step 17 through step 22 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  24. Remove the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain return hose to the subframe.
  25. Remove the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain supply hose to the subframe.
  26. Position the subframe lift underneath the gantry.
  27. Use the hooks (x3) to attach the drive unit sling tool to the rear drive unit.
  28. Attach the drive unit sling tool to the gantry.
  29. Use the gantry to raise the drive unit sling tool so that there is slight tension in the cables.
  30. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the LH side of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  31. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the RH side of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  32. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the rear of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  33. With the help of an assistant, use the gantry to raise the rear drive unit sling tool, guide halfshafts away from the rear drive unit, and separate the rear drive unit up from the rear subframe.
  34. Move the rear subframe and subframe lift out from underneath the rear drive unit.
  35. Lower the rear drive unit onto an empty pallet, and then place a wood block under the stator to keep the assembly upright.
  36. Install the bushing removal tool onto the RH rear drive unit bushing.

    Note
    Use cups "C", "A", and "G" to drive bushing out. Always drive on the bearing side and hold the opposite side.
  37. Press the bushing out from the casting.

    Set up the bushing removal tool with the bearing away from the drive unit.

    Note
    The threaded rod is very close to the RDU components, and damage to the tool/RDU may occur if the bushing is driven out from the drive unit side.
  38. Separate the bushing tool and remove the bushing.

Install

  1. Inspect that the bushing is intact, and then spray lubricant on the outside of the bushing.
  2. Prepare the bushing removal tool.

    Note
    Use cups "C", "A", and "G" to drive bushing out. Always drive on the bearing side and hold the opposite side.
  3. Press in the new bushing.

    Make sure the keyway is facing the top of the drive unit, and parallel to the drive unit.
  4. Separate the bushing tool, and then remove it from the drive unit.
  5. Raise the rear drive unit from the empty pallet.
  6. Move the rear subframe and subframe lift to underneath the rear drive unit.
  7. With the help of an assistant, use the gantry to lower the rear drive unit sling tool, guide halfshafts away from the rear drive unit, and lower the rear drive unit into the rear subframe.
  8. Lower the rear drive unit sling tool so as to install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the rear of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  9. Install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the RH side of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  10. Install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the LH side of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  11. Lower the drive unit sling tool to release tension in the cables, and then remove the sling tool from the gantry.
  12. Remove the hooks (x3), and then remove the drive unit sling tool from the rear drive unit.
  13. Tighten the rear drive unit mount bolts (x3).
    120 Nm (88.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  14. Install the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain supply hose to the subframe.
  15. Install the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain return hose to the subframe.
  16. Continue installing the rear drive unit into the rear subframe. See Drive Unit - Rear (Remove and Install).
  17. Install the rear subframe into the vehicle. See Subframe Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
  18. Install the rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  19. Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  20. Remove coolant bottle cap.
  21. Hold brake pedal and select park on the UI to disable EPB service mode.
  22. Perform the following routine using Service Mode or Toolbox (see 0005 - Service Modes): TEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode:
    • Thermal ➜ Actions ➜ Coolant Purge Stop or Coolant Purge Start
    • Thermal ➜ Coolant System ➜ Coolant Purge Start
    via Service Mode Plus:
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Front Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Unit ➜ Front Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Unit ➜ Rear Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge

    Note
    Make sure the vehicle is not in drive state. Putting vehicle into drive state will stop this routine. Monitor the levels as required.
  23. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary.

    Ensure that the fluid level is at the Max line.
  24. Install the coolant bottle cap.
  25. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  26. Install the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace).
  27. Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace)
  28. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  29. Calibrate the rear doors.

    Note
    If the "Calibration Needed" message appears on the vehicle touchscreen, touch and hold Calibrate to calibrate the rear doors.
  30. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
