Active Damper - Front - LH (Remove and Replace)

- Open LH front door
- Lower LH front window

Raise and support vehicle
NotePrepare to raise vehicle, Set air suspension to "Jack Mode", Position lift arm pads on vehicle jack pads, DO NOT position the lift arm pads under the battery or side rails, as shown in red

Release IP service panel
Note2x tabs, 4x datums, Release top tabs and slide rearward
- Using laptop connect to vehicle with ethernet diag kit and Toolbox 3
- Select ‘Actions’ tab and search for ‘TAS service mode’

Select ‘ PROC_TAS_X_ENTER-SERVICE-MODESearch for routine in ToolboxTAS Enter Service Run Mode ’, click ‘Run’, and allow routine to complete
NoteSelect ‘X’ at top right of window to close oncecomplete
- Select ‘Actions’ tab and search for ‘Deflate Spring'

Select ‘ PROC_TAS_X_DEFLATESearch for routine in ToolboxTAS Deflate ComponentChassis / Suspension - Deflate ’, click ‘Run’, and allow routine to complete

Open hood
NoteVia center display > Controls > Frunk Open

Remove rear underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums

Remove RH underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums, Remove brush clip at hinge cover first, Take note of clip at headlamp

Remove LH underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums, Remove brush clip at hinge cover first, Take note of clip at headlamp

Remove front underhood apron
Note12x clips, 3 datums

Remove frunk access panel
Note3x clips, 3x hooks, 1x connector
-
Remove frunk carpet
-
Remove frunk assembly
Note8x bolts, 10mm, 5 Nm
-
Remove LH front wheel center cap
Note1x cap
-
Loosen LH front wheel
Note5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
-
Raise vehicle partially and lower onto locks
NoteSet vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side
-
Remove LH front wheel
Note5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
-
Release LH front upper control arm bracket and harness
Note1x bolt, 10mm, 3 Nm, Release with harness attached
-
Release LH wheel speed sensor clips from RH front knuckle
Note2x clips
-
Release LH damper harness connectors from LH front air spring module
Note2x connectors
-
Release LH damper harness bracket from LH front air spring module
Note2x tabs
-
Remove bolt securing LH front brake line to LH front air spring module
Note1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm
-
Release LH ANC sensor and damper bracket from air spring module
Note1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm, Route around links and hang, Take note of how the harness is routed for installation
-
Remove nut and bolt securing LH front air spring module to front lower aft link assembly
Note1x bolt, 21mm, 1x nut, 21mm, 140 Nm
-
Release the LH front upper control arm from the suspension assembly
Note1x patch nut, 15mm, 1x bolt, T50, 60 Nm, Discard nut after removal

Lower vehicle for access to underhood area
NoteMake sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side
-
Release remote brake fluid reservoir from LH FST cap
Note2x bolts, 10mm, 8 Nm, 1x datum, Rotate reservoir with bracket out of LH FST cap

Release LH FST cap from multi-system beam
Note3x bolts, 13mm, 22 Nm, 1x clip
-
Release LH FST cap from shock tower and remove from vehicle
Note1x bolt, 13mm, 14 Nm
-
Release air line fitting from LH air spring module
Note1x nut, 10mm, 2 Nm, Once air leak can be heard, stop turning until all air released
-
Remove VOSS fitting from air spring module air line
Note1x VOSS fitting, Slide threaded section back, Remove the collet, Then slide threaded section off of air line, Discard after removal

Remove nuts securing the LH front air spring module and remove
Note3x nuts, 13mm, 39 Nm, Use one hand to hold the air spring module before completely removing the last nut, Use caution to not get caught on harnesses and connectors

Position and install LH front air spring module
NoteRecommend assistance, 3x nuts, 13mm, 39 Nm, Use caution to not get caught on harnesses and connectors

Remove plug and install air line into LH air spring module
NotePress hose into fitting until mark aligns with top of fitting
-
Raise vehicle partially and lower onto locks
NoteSet vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side

Secure LH front knuckle to upper control arm
Note1x bolt, T50, 1x patch nut, 15mm, 60 Nm, Install new nut
-
Install bolt and nut securing LH front air spring module to front lower aft link
Note1x bolt, 21mm, 1x nut, 21mm, 140 Nm, Fully torque to spec
-
Route ANC sensor and damper bracket and secure to LH front air spring module
Note1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm, Harness routes above lower links and below tie rod/axle
-
Secure LH front brake line to LH front air spring module
Note1x bolt, 10mm, 6 Nm
-
Secure LH front damper harness bracket to LH front air spring module
Note2x tabs

Connect LH damper harness to LH front air spring module
Note2x connectors

Secure LH front wheel speed sensor to LH front knuckle assembly
Note2x clips
-
Secure LH front upper control arm bracket with harness
Note1x bolt, 10mm, 3 Nm
-
Temporarily install LH front wheel
Note5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
-
Lower vehicle until tires are touching the ground
NoteRaise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered
-
Remove Schrader valve cap from air reservoir
Note1x cap
-
Set up nitrogen tank kit to fill reservoir
NoteVerify valves are set to the closed position on the tank, regulator and the air line
-
Connect nitrogen tank hose to reservoir
NoteEarly production VINs have AC valves fittings and need an adapter for schrader fill type ports
-
Open valve on nitrogen tank and set pressure to 8 bar using regulator
NoteSlowly open valve and adjust regulator, Verify pressure is set to 8 bar, If the pressure is not within this range, TAS assisted inflate routine will not operate

Open valve on nitrogen tank hose
-
Verify pressure holds on the regulator valve gauge
Note8 bar, If pressure does not hold, there may be a leak present, Use regulator valve to adjust amount of psi as needed

Re-establish vehicle connection to Toolbox 3
NoteOpen Toolbox 3 website and establish connection to the vehicle. https://toolbox.teslamotors.com, Select connection status icon at top right corner, and select connect locally (icon will turn green when vehicle is connected)
- Select ‘Actions’ tab and search for ‘Inflate"

Select 'PROC_TAS_X_ASSISTED-INFLATESearch for routine in ToolboxTAS Assisted Inflate ComponentChassis / Suspension - Inflate’, click ‘Run’, and allow routine to complete
NoteSelect ‘X’ at top right of window to close once complete, Verify the spring is inflated

Close valve on the nitrogen tank

Close valve on nitrogen tank hose
-
Close the pressure regulator valve on the nitrogen tank to release the line pressure in the lines
-
Remove the nitrogen tank hose from the reservoir
-
Install cap onto reservoir valve
-
Raise vehicle partially and lower onto locks
NoteSet vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side

Remove LH front wheel
Note5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm
-
Perform measurement and inspection between LH front air spring solenoid and brake line
NoteRecommend usage of a digital caliper, Perform measurement between LH front air spring and the brake hose, The clearance must be greater than 15mm and less than 20mm, If measurement is out of spec then rework is required, Inspect brake line and air spring for signs of damage or rubbing, If component damage is present then create a toolbox session and escalate for assistance, Determine if replacement will be required

Carefully rework and adjust LH damper tube position
NoteNote the air springs must be pressurized in order to perform adjustment, Do not adjust if the spring is not pressurized or damage will occurCarefully adjust lower portion of the LH air spring, Grip the damper tube on both sides and rotate slowly, Adjust in direction required to achieve the correct specification, Do not pinch or damage any electrical connections, After adjustment, the LH air spring should be near centered on the lower aft link ball joint

Verify measurement between LH front air spring solenoid and brake line
NoteAfter adjusting strut position, verify measurement between LH front air spring and the brake hose again, The clearance must be greater than 15mm and less than 20mm

Install LH front wheel
Note5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm, Start lug nuts by hand before using power tool
-
Lower vehicle until tires are touching the ground
NoteRaise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered

Torque LH front wheel
Note5x nuts, 21 mm, 175 Nm
-
Install LH front wheel center cap
Note1x cap, Verify emblem is aligned with valve stem
- Select ‘Actions’ tab and search for ‘TAS service mode’
-
Select ‘ PROC_TAS_X_ENTER-NORMAL-MODESearch for routine in ToolboxTAS Enter Normal Run Mode ’, click ‘Run’, and allow routine to complete
NoteSelect ‘X’ at top right of window to close once complete

Disconnect Toolbox 3 from vehicle and remove laptop and ethernet diag kit
NoteIf RJ45 ethernet diagnostic connector present media converter box not required. Disconnect directly from laptop using an RJ45 Ethernet cable

Install IP service panel
Note2x tabs, 4 datums, Slide forward engaging datums then secure tabs upward into IP

Remove air suspension from "Jack Mode" and set to "Standard"
NoteUsing center display > Controls > Service > ''Jack Mode'', Using center display > Controls > Suspension > ''Standard''

Secure LH FST cap to shock tower
Note1x bolt, 13mm, 14 Nm
-
Secure LH FST cap to multi-system beam
Note3x bolts, 13mm, 22 Nm, 1x clip
-
Secure remote brake fluid reservoir to LH FST cap
Note2x bolts, 10mm 8 Nm, 1x datum, Rotate reservoir with bracket on to LH FST cap
-
Install frunk assembly
Note8x bolts, 10mm, 5 Nm
-
Install frunk carpet
NoteVerify carpet is properly seated under the seal
-
Install frunk access panel
Note3x clips, 3x hooks, 1x connector
-
Install front underhood apron
Note12x clips, 3x datums
-
Install RH underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums
-
Install LH underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums
-
Install rear underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums
-
Close hood
NotePress firmly in green highlighted areas (see image), Damage may result from pressure elsewhere on hood
-
Remove vehicle from lift
NoteLower rack arms fully and remove them from under vehicle, Remove air suspension from "Jack Mode"
- Raise LH front window
- Close LH front door
- Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
