- 2025-10-06: Released new procedure.
Disassembly
-
Inspect the rear door exterior paint
surface for damage, defects, signs of body repairs, paint modifications, or third-party
vinyl wrap installation.
NoteIf the paint surface has been modified, recommend to revert the modification back to the original. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.NoteTesla does not support third party paint modifications.NoteIf a wrap is installed and both doors are falsely reporting objects, stop the diagnosis and recommend wrap removal before proceeding.NoteIf a wrap is installed and only one door is falsely reporting objects, proceed with diagnosis.
- Open the LH front door.
- Lower the LH front window.
- Lower the LH rear window.
-
Open the LH falcon door.
- Remove the LH rear door trim panel. See Panel - Door Trim - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
- Remove the LH rear door closeout panel. See Closeout Panel - Door - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
Diagnosis
-
Pull on each leg of the ultrasonic
carrier adhesive to check for loose carrier feet.
NoteIf the feet are loose, replace the sensor carrier and ultrasonic sensor. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
-
Verify that none of the carrier feet
are contacting the butyl patch.
NoteIf any of the carrier feet are contacting the butyl patch, replace the sensor carrier and ultrasonic sensor. Otherwise, continue to the next step.NoteThe carrier feet should be centered in the round butyl patch openings.
-
Verify that the sensor carrier foam
disc is present.
NoteIf the foam disc is missing, replace the sensor carrier and ultrasonic sensor. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
-
Inspect for bubbles in the butyl patch
surface.
NoteIf bubbles are present, smooth out any bubbles with a roller. Otherwise, continue to the next step.NoteReplace the butyl patch if it is damaged or not sticking to the door surface.
-
Remove the LH ultrasonic sensor cap,
spring, and spacer. Inspect for a missing cap, spring, spacer, or sensor.
NoteIf one or more components are missing, replace the component(s). Otherwise, continue to the next step.
-
Inspect the LH Ultrasonic Sensor
harness connector pigtail for a missing or unclipped harness clip.
NoteIf the harness clip is missing or unclipped, replace or correct the harness clip and replace the ultrasonic sensor. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
-
Inspect the LH Ultrasonic sensor
alignment to carrier. Verify that the sensor contacts the sensor carrier and is not
crooked.
NoteIf the sensor is misaligned, replace the ultrasonic sensor. Otherwise, continue to the next step.NoteThe ultrasonic sensor must be centered in the sensor carrier opening.
-
Lightly press on the back of the LH
Ultrasonic sensor. Verify that the sensor does not move in farther towards the inner
door surfaces.
NoteIf the sensor moves, replace the sensor and check spring installation. Otherwise, continue to the next step.NoteThe tapered end of spring must be pointed away from sensor when installed.NoteSpring tension may need to be increased by manually extending the spring.
-
Perform a wiggle test on the LH
ultrasonic sensor. Verify that the sensor does not rock back and forth or twist
side-to-side.
NoteIf the sensor moves, replace the sensor. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
-
Disconnect the LH ultrasonic sensor
harness connector.
Note1x connector, 1x clip
-
Pull the ultrasonic sensor away from
the door surface to release the adhesive connection to the door and remove the
sensor.
-
Inspect the ultrasonic sensor adhesive
pad for discolored adhesive that remained on the sensor.
NoteIf discolored adhesive is present, replace the sensor. Otherwise, continue to the next step.NoteIf the adhesive pad remains on the door surface, remove the adhesive from the door and proceed to the next step.
-
Inspect the sensor mounting surface on
the inner door panel for a contaminated sensor mounting surface, e-coat and paint drips,
a damaged mounting surface, or a mounting surface that is rough to the touch.
NoteIf any of the defect conditions are found, repair the condition. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
-
Disconnect the ultrasonic ECU logic
connector.
Note1x connector. Release the black locking tab.
-
Measure the resistance of the
ultrasonic ECU ground circuit.
- Set the multimeter to measure resistance.
- Connect a 0.64 mm x 0.64 mm male test pin to the positive lead.
- Connect a ground clamp to the negative lead.
- Clamp the negative lead to the LH upper door harness ground terminal.
- Insert the positive test pin into cavity 13 of the ultrasonic ECU logic connector.
- Check for resistance above 0.5 Ω.
NoteIf resistance above 0.5 Ω is measured, repair or replace LH upper and LH lower door harnesses as needed. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.NoteDo not disconnect the multimeter. -
Wiggle test the LH upper door harness
and LH lower door harness in the sections between the ultrasonic ECU logic connector and
the LH upper door harness ground terminal. Verify that the multimeter does not
intermittently measure above 0.5 Ω.
NoteIf the multimeter measures above 0.5 Ω, repair or replace the LH upper door harness and LH lower door harness as needed. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
-
Disconnect the multimeter leads from
the harness terminal and ECU logic connector.
Reassembly
- Install the ultrasonic sensor. See Sensor - Ultrasonic - Rear Door - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
-
On the center display, select
Service, then hold Calibrate Doors until
the doors cycle and "Calibration Complete" appears.
NoteCalibration is always after LV power is disconnected.
- Raise all windows.
- Close the front doors.
-
Test the object detection function of
the falcon doors while the vehicle is located in an open area.
NoteIf false object detection still occurs and all inspections and tests have passed, escalate the Toolbox session for support.
