Halfshaft - Front Drive Unit - RH (Remove and Replace)

Correction code 39302112 1.32 NOTE: Unless otherwise explicitly stated in the procedure, the above correction code and FRT reflect all of the work required to perform this procedure, including the linked procedures. Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Loosen the RH front axle nut.
  3. Remove the RH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  4. Remove the bolt that attaches the RH front wheel speed sensor.
  5. Release the clips (x2) that attach the RH front wheel speed sensor harness to the RH front knuckle and move the harness aside.
  6. Release the bolt that attaches the RH front brake hose bracket to the RH front knuckle.
  7. Remove the bolt that attaches the RH front brake line to the RH front air spring module.
  8. Remove and discard the RH Nyloc nut that attaches the RH stabilizer bar and move the RH stabilizer bar end link away from the stabilizer bar.
  9. Remove and discard the RH tie rod Nyloc nut and move the tie rod end away.
  10. Remove the nut and bolt that attach the RH front air spring module to the front lower aft link assembly.
  11. Remove the axle nut and washer that attach the RH drive axle to the hub assembly.

    Note
    Discard the washer after removal, the nut can be reused.
  12. If present, remove and discard the bolt that attaches the RH front brake rotor to RH front knuckle assembly.
  13. Setup the hub puller onto the RH hub assembly. Hand tighten the lug nuts (x5).
  14. Use the hub puller to free the RH halfshaft from the hub splines.
  15. Release and discard the Nyloc nut that attaches the RH front upper control arm to the suspension assembly.

    Note
    While holding the upper control arm to the knuckle, slide the bolt out from the top of the knuckle. Support the knuckle while the joint is released.
  16. Remove the RH front halfshaft from the RH front hub assembly.

    Pull knuckle outward. Once the shaft is clear, maneuver it aside for removal. Adjust the hub puller if further clearance is needed.
  17. Remove the hub puller from the RH hub assembly.
  18. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  19. Install the axle removal tool around the inner joint of the RH front halfshaft.

    Position the cable around the axle and use a slide hammer to release it from the drive unit.
  20. Remove the RH front halfshaft from the drive unit, and then remove it from the vehicle.

Install

  1. Install the RH front axle shaft into the frond drive unit.

    Note
    Position the C-clip opening at the bottom of the axle to ease installation. Make sure that the axle is fully seated into the drive unit. Straighten the axle and apply pressure to the opposite end until an audible click is heard when the C-Clip is fully engaged. If an audible click is not heard, adjust the shaft position and reinstall the drive shaft into the front drive unit.
  2. Install the front aero shield. SeePanel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  3. Install clips securing front aero shield
  4. Lower vehicle partially and set lift onto locks
  5. Apply Molykote M-77 to outboard side of RH axle shaft

    Clean if necessary. Apply no more than 1 gram to the axle.
  6. Install the RH halfshaft into hub and bearing assembly with a new lock washer and tighten the nut hand tight.

    Note
    Torque the nut at a later step. Use the nut without the washer to pull the shaft through hub, then remove nut and install the washer and nut. Do not use power tools: the risk of stripping the threads is very high.
  7. Install the bolt and new Nyloc nut that attach the RH front knuckle to the upper control arm (torque 60 Nm).
  8. Install the bolt and nut that attach the RH front air spring module to the front lower aft link (torque 140 Nm).
  9. Position the RH tie rod and install a new Nyloc nut (torque 102 Nm).
  10. Position the stabilizer bar , and then install a new Nyloc nut that attaches the RH end link to the stabilizer bar assembly (torque 70 Nm).

    Counter hold the stud with a 5mm hex socket
  11. Install the bolt that attaches the RH front brake line to the RH front air spring module (torque 6 Nm).
  12. Install the bolt that attaches the brake hose bracket to the RH front knuckle (torque 6 Nm).
  13. Install the clips (x2) that attach the RH front wheel speed sensor harness onto the RH front knuckle.
  14. Install the bolt that attaches the RH front wheel speed sensor to the RH front knuckle (torque 6 Nm).
  15. Install the RH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  16. Lower the vehicle, and then torque the RH front axle nut to 245 Nm.
  17. Torque the RH front wheel lug nuts (x5) to 175 Nm.
  18. Perform a validation test drive and ensure proper performance.
