21mm Radiator (Remove and Replace)

Correction code 183010321.40 NOTE: Unless otherwise explicitly stated in the procedure, the above correction code and FRT reflect all of the work required to perform this procedure, including the linked procedures. Do not stack correction codes unless explicitly told to do so. NOTE: See Flat Rate Times to learn more about FRTs and how they are created. Remove

  1. Open the LH front door.
  2. Lower the LH and RH front windows.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  4. Turn the steering wheel fully to the right.
  5. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  6. Remove the front fascia assembly. See Fascia Assembly - Front (Remove and Install).
  7. Disconnect the active grille shutter actuator connector.

    Note
    Release the connector locking tab to disconnect.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Pocket screwdriver
  8. Disconnect the ambient air temperature sensor connector, and then release the grommet that attaches the sensor to the front end carrier.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Plastic trim tool
    • Pocket screwdriver
  9. Raise the vehicle partially and lower onto locks.

    Note
    Set the vehicle to comfortable working height. Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side.
  10. Place a fluid catcher below the LH front side of the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Fluid catcher - 1080568-00-A
  11. Release the spring clips (x2) that attach the radiator inlet and outlet hoses to the top LH side of the radiator, disconnect the hoses, and then allow coolant to drain.

    Note
    Plug the hoses and radiator as needed.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Coolant hose plug kit - 1135762-00-A
    • Pick radiator hose soft grip 10.30in
  12. Place a fluid catcher below the RH front side of the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Fluid catcher - 1080568-00-A
  13. Release the spring clips (x2) that attach the radiator inlet and outlet hoses to the top RH side of the radiator, disconnect the hoses, and then allow coolant to drain.

    • Coolant hose plug kit - 1135762-00-A
    • Pick radiator hose soft grip 10.30in
  14. Raise the vehicle fully and lower lift onto locks.

    Note
    Set the vehicle to comfortable working height. Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side.
  15. Remove the cooling fan module. See Cooling Fan Module (Remove and Replace).
  16. Remove the 12mm radiator. See 12mm Radiator (Remove and Replace).
  17. Release the locking tabs (x4) that attach the 21mm radiator to the cooling fan module, and then remove the 21mm radiator from the cooling fan module.

    Note
    Push the 21mm radiator away from the cooling fan module while releasing each locking tab.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Small flat head screwdriver

Install

  1. Position the 21mm radiator on the cooling fan module, and then install the locking tabs (x4) that attach the 21mm radiator to the cooling fan module.

    Note
    Align the 21mm radiator locking tabs with the cooling fan module, and then press the 21mm radiator on the cooling fan module to engage the locking tabs.
  2. Install the 12mm radiator. See 12mm Radiator (Remove and Replace).
  3. Install the cooling fan module. See Cooling Fan Module (Remove and Replace).
  4. Lower the vehicle partially and set lift onto locks.

    Note
    Raise lift off locks, and then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered. Set the vehicle to comfortable working height.
  5. Position the radiator inlet and outlet hoses on the top RH side of the radiator, and then install the spring clips (x2) that attach the hoses to the radiator.

    Note
    Remove plugs from both ends of each hose. Perform push-pull-push test to make sure the hoses are fully seated.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Coolant hose plug kit - 1135762-00-A
  6. Place a fluid catcher below the LH front side of the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Fluid catcher - 1080568-00-A
  7. Position the radiator inlet and outlet hoses on the top LH side of the radiator, and then install the spring clips (x2) that attach the hoses to the radiator.

    Note
    Remove plugs from both ends of each hose. Perform push-pull-push test to make sure the hoses are fully seated.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Coolant hose plug kit - 1135762-00-A
  8. Remove the fluid catcher from under the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Fluid catcher - 1080568-00-A
  9. Install the grommet that attaches the ambient air temperature sensor to the front end carrier, and then connect the sensor connector.
  10. Connect the active grille shutter actuator connector.

    Note
    Engage the connector locking tab.
  11. Remove the coolant bottle cap.
  12. Fill coolant to the proper level.

    Ensure the fluid level is filled to the Max line.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flashlight LED
    • Inspection mirror, rectangular
  13. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.

    Raise lift off locks, and then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered.
  14. Install the front fascia assembly. See Fascia Assembly - Front (Remove and Install).
  15. Perform the following routine using Service Mode or Toolbox (see 0005 - Service Modes): TEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode:
    • Thermal ➜ Actions ➜ Coolant Purge Stop or Coolant Purge Start
    • Thermal ➜ Coolant System ➜ Coolant Purge Start
    via Service Mode Plus:
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Front Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Unit ➜ Front Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
    • Drive Unit ➜ Rear Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge

    Note
    • Make sure the vehicle is not in drive state. Putting the vehicle into drive state will stop this routine.
    • Routine is still running despite the stop message.
    • Coolant pumps will be audible.
    • Test lasts approximately 10 minutes.
    • Monitor levels as required.
  16. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary.

  17. Install the coolant bottle cap.

    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Thermal System Test
    • Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Thermal System Test
    • Drive Unit ➜ Front Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Thermal System Test

  19. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  20. Calibrate the rear doors.

    Note
    If the "Calibration Needed" message appears on the vehicle touchscreen, touch and hold Calibrate to calibrate the rear doors.
  21. Press the brake pedal to turn on the drive rails.
  22. Turn the steering wheel back to center position.
  23. Lower the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  24. Raise the LH and RH front windows.
  25. Close the LH front door.
