3 Way Coolant Valve - Radiator Bypass (Remove and Replace)

Remove

Raise and support vehicle
NoteSet air suspension to "Jack Mode", Position lift arm pads on vehicle jack pads, DO NOT position the lift arm pads under the battery or side rails, as shown in red

Open hood
NoteVia center display > Controls > Frunk Open

Remove rear underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums
-
Remove RH underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums, Remove brush clip at hinge cover first, Take note of clip at headlamp

Remove LH underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums, Remove brush clip at hinge cover first, Take note of clip at headlamp

Remove front underhood apron
Note12x clips, 3 datums
-
Remove frunk access panel
Note3x clips, 3x hooks, 1x connector
-
Remove frunk carpet
-
Remove frunk assembly
Note8x bolts, 10mm, 5 Nm
-
Power off vehicle via center display
NoteControls > Safety & Security > Power Off
-
Disconnect LV battery connector and First Responder Loop
Note2x connectors, Lift up and release green locking tab, Pull black connector lock outwards to release connection, Release red lock tab on FRL

Release upper connections on the front controller
Note2x locking connectors, Push in locking tabs and lift levers to release
-
Release LH middle connection on the front controller
Note1x locking connector, Push in locking tab and lift lever to release
-
Release RH middle connections on the front controller
Note2x locking connectors, Slide locking mechanism outwards to release
-
Release lower connections on the front controller
Note2x locking connectors, Slide red locking tab outwards to release
-
Remove bolt securing front controller ground cable
Note1x bolt, 10mm, 10 Nm
-
Remove bolts securing front controller
Note3x bolts, 10mm, 10 Nm
-
Remove front controller from vehicle
Note2x locating tabs, 1x ground cable
-
Release frunk harness clip from body and move harness aside
Note1x fir tree clip, Secure harness to the side
-
Raise vehicle fully and lower lift onto locks
NoteSet vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side

Remove clips securing front aero shield
Note5x push clips
-
Remove bolts securing front aero shield and remove from vehicle
Note9x bolts, 10mm, 6 Nm
-
Place absorbent material below three way valve
NotePlace to cover steering gear and front skid plate, Will prevent build up of fluid
-
Remove lower nut securing three way valve to body
Note1x nut, 10mm, 6 Nm
-
Lower vehicle until tires are touching the ground
NoteRaise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered

Place coolant catcher below front of vehicle
NotePosition to catch all coolant loss

Release three way valve connection
Note1x locking connector, Disengage red locking tab and slide tab outwards to release connection

Release coolant hose clip from three way valve
Note1x fir tree clip
-
Release battery radiator inlet hose from three way valve
Note1x hose clip, 2x plugs, Plug both ends
-
Release thermal bar battery return hose from three way valve
Note1x hose clip, 2x plugs, Plug both ends
-
Release three way valve to HV pack hose from three way valve
Note1x hose clip, 2x plugs, Plug both ends as required
-
Remove remaining top nut securing three way valve
Note1x nut, 10mm, 6 Nm
-
Remove three way valve from vehicle
NoteSeparate from studs and remove
Install

Install three way valve to vehicle
NoteSecure onto studs, Install fasteners at later steps
-
Install top nut securing 3 way valve to body
Note1x nut, 10mm, 6 Nm
-
Secure three way valve to HV pack hose onto three way valve
Note1x hose clip, 2x hose plugs, Remove any plugs and secure hose, Perform push-pull-push test

Secure thermal bar battery return hose onto three way valve
Note1x hose clip, 2x hose plugs, Remove any plugs and secure hose, Perform push-pull-push test

Secure battery radiator inlet hose onto three way valve
Note1x hose clip, 2x hose plugs, Remove any plugs and secure hose, Perform push-pull-push test

Secure coolant hose clip onto three way valve
Note1x fir tree clip
-
Secure three way valve connection
Note1x locking connector, Secure connector and fully engage red locking tab
- Remove coolant catcher from under vehicle
-
Raise vehicle fully and lower lift onto locks
NoteSet vehicle to comfortable working height, Make sure there's an audible click of the locks on both sides before lowering, otherwise vehicle may tilt to the side

Install lower nut securing three way valve to body
Note1x nut, 10mm, 6 Nm
-
Remove absorbent material from below three way valve
NoteRemove absorbent material and clean away all excess residue
-
Apply Loctite 222 onto front aero shield bolts and install fasteners securing front aero shield to vehicle
Note9x bolts, 10mm, 6 Nm
-
Install clips securing front aero shield
Note5x push clips
-
Lower vehicle until tires are touching the ground
NoteRaise lift off locks, then hold lock release lever to keep locks free while vehicle is lowered

Return frunk harness to original position and secure clip
Note1x fir tree clip
-
Position front controller for installation and position ground cable
Note2x locating tabs, 1x ground cable
-
Install bolts securing front controller
Note3x bolts, 10mm, 10 Nm, Start with the side bolt
-
Install bolt securing front controller ground cable
Note1x bolt, 10mm, 10 Nm
-
Secure lower connections on the front controller
Note2x locking connectors, Engage red locking tab
-
Secure RH middle connections on front controller
Note2x locking connectors, Verify yellow locking tabs are fully opened, Seat connectors and mechanism will begin to engage

Secure LH middle connection for front controller
Note1x locking connector, Verify lever is fully opened, Seat connector and lever will being to engage

Secure upper connections for the front controller
Note2x locking connectors, Verify levers are fully opened, Seat connectors and levers will begin to engage

Remove coolant bottle cap
-
Fill coolant to the proper level
NoteEnsure that the fluid level filled to the Max line
-
Connect First Responder Loop and LV battery connector
Note2x connectors, Secure FRL first, Seat LV battery connection and push black connector lock inwards to secure, Engage upper locking tab when fully seated

Perform the following routine using Service Mode or Toolbox (see 0005 - Service Modes):

- Thermal ➜ Actions ➜ Coolant Purge Stop or Coolant Purge Start
- Thermal ➜ Coolant System ➜ Coolant Purge Start
- Drive Inverter ➜ Front Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
- Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
- Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Left Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
- Drive Inverter ➜ Rear Right Drive Inverter Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
- Drive Unit ➜ Front Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
- Drive Unit ➜ Rear Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Coolant Air Purge
Note- Make sure the vehicle is not in drive state. Putting the vehicle into drive state will stop this routine.
- Routine is still running despite the stop message.
- Coolant pumps will be audible.
- Test lasts approximately 10 minutes.
- Monitor levels as required.

Inspect coolant level and top off as necessary
NoteEnsure that the fluid level is at the Max line, Top off fluid as required

Install coolant bottle cap
- Select ‘Actions/Autodiag’ and search for ‘Thermal’

Perform the following routine using Service Mode or Toolbox (see 0005 - Service Modes):

Install frunk assembly
Note8x bolts, 10mm, 5 Nm

Install frunk carpet
NoteVerify carpet is properly seated under the seal

Install frunk access panel
Note3x clips, 3x hooks, 1x connector

Install front underhood apron
Note12x clips, 3x datums
-
Install LH underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2 datums
-
Install RH underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums
-
Install rear underhood apron
Note11x clips, 2x datums
- Close hood
-
Calibrate the rear doors.
NoteIf the "Calibration Needed" message appears on the vehicle touchscreen, touch and hold Calibrate to calibrate the rear doors.
- Raise LH and RH front windows
- Close LH front door
