Brake Pads and Rotors - Rear - Set (Remove and Replace)
Correction code 33011005 1.14 NOTE: Unless otherwise explicitly stated in the procedure, the above correction code and FRT reflect all of the work required to perform this procedure, including the linked procedures. Do not stack correction codes unless explicitly told to do so. NOTE: See Flat Rate Times to learn more about FRTs and how they are created. To provide feedback on FRT values, email LaborTimeFeedback@tesla.com. NOTE: See Personal Protection to make sure proper PPE is worn when performing the below procedure.
- 2023-11-09: Updated rear caliper to knuckle torque to 115 Nm.
- 2023-10-16: Added step to make sure caliper piston face is aligned for Mando calipers.
- 2023-3-24: Moved brake pedal pumping to before reservoir level check, and added precautionary steps for fluid spillage.
Remove
- Raise and support the vehicle on a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
- Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
- Release the LH and RH park brake calipers using Toolbox. See Park Brake Caliper - Release.
- Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
-
Place absorbent material underneath
the brake booster and the brake fluid reservoir area.
-
Clean the area around brake fluid
reservoir, and then remove the brake reservoir cap.
- Remove the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
-
Release the red locking tab, and then
disconnect the electrical harness from the RH rear brake caliper motor connector.
-
Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the
RH rear caliper to the bracket, and then let the caliper hang from the body.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 14 mm socket
-
Use a caliper spreader kit or similar
tool to gently push the pistons back into the brake caliper.
-
Remove the brake pads (x2) from the
rear caliper bracket.
NotePress the anti-rattle spring tab (x1 on each side) to release the brake pads.
-
Remove the anti-rattle springs (x2)
from the rear brake caliper.
-
Clean the RH rear brake caliper with
brake cleaner.
NoteUse a nylon brush only, if necessary.NoteAllow 1 minute dry time.
-
Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the
RH rear brake caliper to the rear knuckle, and then let the caliper hang from the body
using S-hooks.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- External Torx E18
NoteRoute the caliper hose so that it does not get caught on the rear stabilizer bar. -
If installed, remove the bolt that
attaches the RH rotor to the hub.
NoteSome vehicles may not have this fastener installed from the factory.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 13 mm socket
-
Remove the RH rotor from the rear
knuckle.
- Repeat step 8 through step 16 for the LH side of the vehicle.
Install
- Position the RH rear rotor onto the rear knuckle.
-
Install the RH rear brake caliper to
the knuckle, and then secure the caliper with bolts (x2).Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- External Torx E18
-
Install the anti-rattle springs (x2)
onto the rear brake caliper.
-
Install the brake pads (x2) onto the
rear caliper bracket.
NoteMake sure the brake pads seat past the spring tabs.
- If a Mando calipler, use needle-nose pliers to ensure that the slots in the rear brake caliper piston face are at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.
-
Install the bolts (x2) that attach the
rear caliper onto the bracket.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- 14 mm socket
-
Connect the EPB electrical connector
to the caliper motor.
NoteFully seat the electrical connector, and then engage the locking tab.
- Repeat step 1 through step 7 on the LH side of the vehicle.
- Install the LH and RH rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
- Pump the brake pedal repeatedly until firm to seat the brake pads against the rotors.
-
Check brake fluid level and top off
the reservoir, if necessary.
NoteIf the brake fluid level is above the Max line, remove the extra brake fluid.
-
Install the brake reservoir cap.
-
Remove the absorbent material from
underneath the brake booster and brake fluid reservoir area.
- Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
-
Perform a road test and burnish the
brakes. Ensure proper brake pedal feel and performance.
