Steering Column (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Open the LH front door.
  3. Lower the LH and RH front windows.
  4. Move the front LH seat fully back.
  5. Remove the LH instrument panel end cap. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  6. Remove the LH middle A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the LH front sill. panel trim. See Trim - Sill Panel - Front - LH (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the LH lower A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Lower - LH (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove the LH instrument panel middle trim. See Trim - Middle - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  10. Adjust the steering column fully rearward and fully down.
  11. Set the steering yoke/wheel to point straight ahead.

    Note
    Use the steering yoke bubble level fixture (1706054-00-A) to confirm that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  12. Open the RH front door.
  13. Move the front passenger seat fully rearwards.
  14. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  15. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  16. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  17. Remove the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  18. Remove the bolt that attaches the steering rack to the steering column shaft.
    30 Nm (22.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  19. Slide the steering column shaft upwards to remove it from the steering rack.
  20. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  21. Remove the front passenger floor mat.
  22. Remove the front passenger footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Passenger (Remove and Replace).
  23. Remove the RH center console side panel carpet. See Carpet - Side Panel - Center Console - LH (Remove and Replace).
  24. Remove the RH front sill. panel trim. See Trim - Sill Panel - Front - LH (Remove and Replace).
  25. Remove the RH instrument panel end cap. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  26. Remove the RH middle A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  27. Remove the RH lower A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Lower - LH (Remove and Replace).
  28. Remove the center console phone dock from the center console as an assembly. However, do not remove the inductive charger from the phone dock. See Phone Dock - Center Console (Remove and Replace).
  29. Remove the instrument panel service panel from the center console as an assembly. However, do not remove the cabin temperature sensor fan from the service panel. See Service Panel - Instrument Panel (Remove and Replace).
  30. Remove the touchscreen. See Touchscreen (HW3) (Remove and Replace).
  31. Release the tabs (x4) that attach the instrument panel closeout panel to the instrument panel, and then remove the closeout panel from the instrument panel.
  32. Remove the RH instrument panel middle trim. See Trim - Middle - Instrument Panel - RH (Remove and Replace).
  33. Remove the front passenger knee airbag as an assembly. However, do not remove the components from the knee airbag assembly after the assembly has been removed from the instrument panel. See Knee Airbag - Front Passenger (Remove and Replace).
  34. Remove the glove box. See Glove Box (Remove and Replace).
  35. Remove the main instrument panel decor. See Decor - Instrument Panel - Main (Remove and Replace).
  36. Remove the driver airbag. See Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  37. Remove the steering yoke/wheel. See Steering Yoke/Wheel (Remove and Replace).
  38. Remove the driver floor mat.
  39. Remove the driver outboard footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Outboard - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  40. Remove the driver inboard footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Inboard - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  41. Remove the driver knee airbag. However, do not remove the components from the knee airbag assembly after the assembly has been removed from the instrument panel. See Knee Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  42. Remove the steering column upper shroud. See Shroud - Upper - Steering Column (Remove and Replace).
  43. Remove the steering column lower shroud. See Shroud - Lower - Steering Column (Remove and Replace).
  44. Remove the steering column control module. See Module - Steering Column Control (Remove and Replace).
  45. Remove the lower instrument panel. See Instrument Panel - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  46. Release the clip, and then disconnect the steering column electrical harness.
  47. Release the steering intermediate shaft dash boot.

    Note
    Slide up and clear of dash panel.
  48. Remove the nuts (x4) that attach the steering column to the IP carrier.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  49. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.

    Note
    Guide the lower steering shaft out through the bulkhead while maneuvering the upper steering brace out of the driver's door.

Install

  1. Transfer the lower steering column shroud datum to the new steering column.
  2. Install the nuts (x4) that attach the steering column to the IP carrier.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket

    Note
    Guide the lower steering shaft down through the bulkhead.
  3. Connect the steering column electrical harness connector, and then secure the harness with clip.
  4. Secure the steering intermediate shaft dash boot.

    Ensure the boot is flush with the dash panel.
  5. Raise the vehicle to a comfortable working height.
  6. Slide the lower steering column shaft onto the steering rack, and then secure it with bolt.
    30 Nm (22.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
  7. Install the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  8. Install the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  9. Lower the vehicle until the tires are touching the ground.
  10. Install the lower instrument panel. See Instrument Panel - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  11. Install the steering column control module. See Module - Steering Column Control (Remove and Replace).
  12. Install the steering column lower shroud. See Shroud - Lower - Steering Column (Remove and Replace).
  13. Install the steering column upper shroud. See Shroud - Upper - Steering Column (Remove and Replace).
  14. Install the driver knee airbag. See Knee Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  15. Install the LH center console side panel carpet. See Carpet - Side Panel - Center Console - LH (Remove and Replace).
  16. Install the driver inboard footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Inboard - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  17. Install the driver outboard footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Outboard - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  18. Install the driver floor mat.
  19. Install the steering yoke/wheel. See Steering Yoke/Wheel (Remove and Replace).
  20. Install the driver airbag. See Airbag - Driver (Remove and Replace).
  21. Install the main instrument panel decor. See Decor - Instrument Panel - Main (Remove and Replace).
  22. Install the glove box. See Glove Box (Remove and Replace).
  23. Install the front passenger knee airbag. See Knee Airbag - Front Passenger (Remove and Replace).
  24. Install the RH center console side panel carpet. See Carpet - Side Panel - Center Console - LH (Remove and Replace).
  25. Install the front passenger footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Passenger (Remove and Replace).
  26. Install the RH lower A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Lower - LH (Remove and Replace).
  27. Install the RH middle A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  28. Install the RH instrument panel end cap. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  29. Install the RH front sill. panel trim. See Trim - Sill Panel - Front - LH (Remove and Replace).
  30. Install the front passenger floor mat.
  31. Install the RH instrument panel middle trim. See Trim - Middle - Instrument Panel - RH (Remove and Replace).
  32. Fasten the tabs (x4) that attach the IP closeout panel.
  33. Install the touchscreen. See Touchscreen (HW3) (Remove and Replace).
  34. Install the instrument panel service panel. See Service Panel - Instrument Panel (Remove and Replace).
  35. Install the center console phone dock. See Phone Dock - Center Console (Remove and Replace).
  36. Reconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  37. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  38. Restore the front passenger seat back to its original position.
  39. Calibrate the RH rear door by holding the upper B-pillar button in the down position.
  40. Install the LH instrument panel middle trim. See Trim - Middle - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  41. Install LH lower A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Lower - LH (Remove and Replace).
  42. Install the LH front sill panel trim. See Trim - Sill Panel - Front - LH (Remove and Replace).
  43. Install the LH middle A-pillar trim. See Trim - A-Pillar - Middle - LH (Remove and Replace).
  44. Install the LH instrument panel end cap. See End Cap - Instrument Panel - LH (Remove and Replace).
  45. Restore the driver seat back to its original position.
  46. Calibrate the LH rear door by holding the upper B-pillar button in the down position.
  47. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to be vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  48. In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, and then search for STEERING.
  49. Click STEERING COLUMN CALIBRATION, and then click Run. Allow the routine to complete before continuing to the next step.

    Steering column will run through the full range of motion up/down and in/out during calibration.
  50. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from be vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  51. Adjust the steering column back to its original position.
  52. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  53. Raise the LH and RH front windows.
  54. Close the LH front door.
