Liftgate (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Open the LH and RH front doors.
  2. Move the LH and RH front seats fully forward.
  3. Open the LH and RH rear doors.
  4. Fold the LH and RH 2nd row seats into down position if equipped with bench seat.
  5. Open the liftgate.
  6. Remove the lower liftgate trim. See Trim - Liftgate - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the liftgate speaker grille. Grille - Speaker - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the liftgate upper trim. See Trim - Upper - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove the RH trunk sill trim. See Trim - Sill - Trunk (Remove and Replace).
  10. Remove the RH mid C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Mid - LH (Remove and Replace).
  11. Remove the RH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  12. Release the clips (x7) that partially attach the RH rear side of the headliner.
  13. Remove the RH active spoiler catch basin cover. See Catch Basin - Active Spoiler - LH (Remove and Replace).
  14. Release the clip from the liftgate assembly, and then disconnect the high mounted brake light electrical connector.
  15. Remove the LH catch basin cover.
  16. Remove the FM antenna amplifiers. See Antenna Amplifier - FM (Remove and Replace).
  17. Remove the antenna ground noise filter. See Noise Filter - Ground - Antenna (Remove and Replace).
  18. Remove the antenna LV noise filter. See Noise Filter - LV - Antenna (Remove and Replace).
  19. Close the liftgate.
  20. Remove the high mounted brake light. See Light - Brake - High Mounted (Remove and Replace).
  21. Remove the screws (x4) that attach the spoiler assembly.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
  22. Remove the backlight glass. See Backlight Glass (Remove and Replace).
  23. Remove the masking tape from the liftgate assembly.
  24. Open the liftgate.
  25. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the liftgate harness electrical connectors (x4).
  26. Remove the clips (x4) that attach the liftgate electrical harness to the body.
  27. Remove the bolt that attaches the ground strap to the body.
    9 Nm (6.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  28. Release the grommet, and then remove the harness from the vehicle.
  29. Remove the LH and RH liftgate speakers. See Speaker - Liftgate - LH (Remove and Replace).
  30. Remove the LH and RH liftgate tweeters. See Tweeter - Liftgate - LH (Remove and Replace).
  31. Remove the patch bolts (x8) that attach the liftgate bracket trim.
    2.5 Nm (1.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 bit

    Note
    Discard the bolts after removal.
  32. Release the clips (x2) that attach the RH and LH liftgate water catch basin assemblies.
  33. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the ground straps to the liftgate.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  34. Remove the clips (x17) that attach the liftgate harness to the liftgate assembly, and then remove the harness from the vehicle.
  35. Release the locking tabs, and then disconnect the LH and RH rear fog/reverse light electrical connectors (x2).
  36. Remove the nuts (x6) that attach the LH and RH rear fog/reverse light assemblies, and then remove them from the liftgate assembly.
    4 Nm (2.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket

    Note
    Remove the light trim covers to gain access to the fasteners that attach the light assemblies to the liftgate.
  37. Remove the bolts (x3) that attach the liftgate applique bracket.
    2 Nm (1.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 socket
  38. Release the clips (x6) that attach the liftgate taillight and applique bracket assembly to the liftgate.

    Note the center of the applique is secured by clips.

    Take care not to damage the applique or body.

    The applique can let rest on the liftgate.
  39. Put the removed liftgate tail lights, applique, and bracket assembly in a safe area.
  40. Remove the rear facing camera. See Camera - Rear Facing (HW3) (Remove and Replace).
  41. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the liftgate handle to the liftgate.
    14.4 Nm (10.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket

    Note
    Support the liftgate handle from the inside when released.
  42. Disconnect the liftgate handle assembly electrical connector.
  43. Disconnect the LH and RH liftgate anti-pinch electrical connectors.

    Use a pocket screwdriver to release the tab on the connectors.
  44. Release the holding tab that attaches the liftgate latch power release cable to the liftgate.
  45. Remove the liftgate latch. See Latch - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  46. Remove the liftgate cinching actuator. See Actuator - Cinching - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  47. Remove the liftgate high force cinching actuator with the liftgate latch power release from liftgate, and then disconnect the electrical connector.

    Note
    Release the emergency release cable from the liftgate.
  48. Remove the remaining clips (x3) that attach the LH rear liftgate pinch strip to the liftgate.
  49. Remove the LH pinch strip grommet, and then remove the pinch strip from the liftgate.
  50. Remove the remaining push pin clips (x3) that attach the RH rear liftgate pinch strip to the liftgate.
  51. Remove the RH pinch strip grommet, and then remove the pinch strip from the liftgate.
  52. Disconnect the RH and LH license plate light electrical connectors (x2).
  53. Disconnect the electrical connectors (x2), and then remove the LH and RH license plate lights.

    Note
    From both sides of the liftgate, press the locking tab on each license plate light to release.
  54. Remove the radio tuner. See Tuner - FM / HD / XM (Remove and Replace).
  55. Remove the liftgate drain plug.
  56. Remove the screws (x4) that attach the LH and RH liftgate wedge dampers to the liftgate.
    12 Nm (8.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
  57. Remove the LH and RH liftgate lower bumpers from the liftgate.
  58. Place a fender cover on the LH side of the vehicle.
  59. Mark the fastener location for installation.

    Note
    Location of bolts for hinge can be marked using masking tape, sharpie, or lightly scribing with pocket screwdriver.
  60. Install a hood prop to support the liftgate.
  61. Release the clips (x2) that attach the LH and RH liftgate struts to the liftgate.
  62. With an assistant, remove the liftgate from the vehicle.
  63. Remove and discard the LH and RH liftgate strut ball studs from the liftgate.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket

    Note
    Discard the strut ball stud after removal.
  64. With an assistant, remove the bolts (x4) that attach the liftgate hinges to body, and then remove the hinges from the vehicle.
    38 Nm (28.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18

Install

CAUTION
If using this procedure to install an unpainted part, make sure to apply seam sealer to all seams prior to installing and painting the part. Refer to the Collision Repair manual for more information.
  1. With an assistant, install the liftgate onto the vehicle.
    38 Nm (28.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  2. Install the LH and RH liftgate strut ball studs onto the liftgate.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket

    Note
    Install new patched ball studs.
  3. Install the LH and RH liftgate struts to liftgate and secure them with strut clips (x2).
  4. Install the screws (x4) that attach the LH and RH liftgate wedge bumpers onto the liftgate.
    12 Nm (8.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
  5. Install the LH and RH liftgate lower bumper stops onto the liftgate.
  6. Close the liftgate to check for gap/flush, and that the liftgate closes as expected.

    Adjust the hinges if necessary, and then open the liftgate when done.
  7. Install the license plate frame screw grommets (x4) onto the liftgate.
  8. Install the applique bracket screw grommets (x3) onto the liftgate.
  9. Install the RH license plate light onto the liftgate.

    Make sure you hear the locking tab snap into place holding the license plate light in place.
  10. Install the LH license plate light onto the liftgate.

    Make sure you hear the locking tabs (x3) snap into place holding the license plate light in place.
  11. Install the liftgate drain plug.
  12. Insert the liftgate harness through the top liftgate grommet hole, and then secure the harness with clips (x17).
  13. Install the liftgate harness grommet.

    Apply P-80 onto the grommet for easier fit.

    Make sure the grommet is fully installed.
  14. Install the RH pinch strip grommet onto the liftgate.

  15. Install the RH rear liftgate pinch strip assembly onto the liftgate and secure it with push clips (x3).
  16. Install the LH pinch strip grommet onto the liftgate.

  17. Install the LH rear liftgate pinch strip assembly onto the liftgate and secure it with push clips (x3).
  18. Install the LH and RH liftgate anti pinch electrical connectors (x2).
  19. Install the backlight glass, but do not install the upper and lower trims or the speaker trim at this time. See Backlight Glass (Remove and Replace).
  20. Connect the RH and LH license plate light electrical connectors (x2).
  21. Install the LH and RH liftgate water catch basin assemblies, and secure them with clips (x2).
  22. Install new patch bolts (x8) that attach the liftgate bracket trim to the liftgate.
    2.5 Nm (1.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T25 bit

    Note
    Install new bolts.
  23. Install the LH and RH liftgate tweeters. See Tweeter - Liftgate - LH (Remove and Replace).
  24. Install the LH and RH liftgate speakers. See Speaker - Liftgate - LH (Remove and Replace).
  25. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the ground strap to the liftgate.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  26. Remove the radio tuner. See Tuner - FM / HD / XM (Remove and Replace).
  27. Connect the liftgate high force cinching actuator electrical connector.

    Engage the locking tabs.
  28. Connect the liftgate latch power release electrical connector.
  29. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the harness ground straps to the liftgate.
    9 Nm (6.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  30. Install the rear facing camera..

    Note
    Feed the camera electrical connector and grommet seal through the liftgate.
  31. Install the grommet to the liftgate.
  32. Connect the rear facing camera electrical connector.
  33. Clean the mating surfaces of the liftgate applique bracket with an IPA wipe.

    Note
    Clean away any residue. Use your thumb to help roll off the adhesive. Allow 1 minute for the IPA to dry before continuing.
  34. Place the liftgate taillight and applique bracket assembly onto the liftgate body.

    Do not fully secure the applique yet. Rest on the liftgate and route rear facing camera onto the applique bracket.
  35. Install new bolts (x2) that attach the rear facing camera to the liftgate bracket.
    1 Nm (.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 bit

    Secure the rear facing camera electrical harness.
  36. Secure the liftgate applique bracket, and then install bolts (x3).
    2 Nm (1.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 bit

    Apply double sided tape if needed. Peel away the red tape, as needed.
  37. Install the nuts (x6) that attach the LH and RH taillight assemblies.
    4 Nm (2.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket

    (x2) taillight trim covers.
  38. Connect the LH and RH taillight electrical connectors.

    Secure the locking tabs.
  39. Install the antenna LV noise filter. See Noise Filter - LV - Antenna (Remove and Replace).
  40. Install the FM antenna amplifiers. See Antenna Amplifier - FM (Remove and Replace).
  41. Install the antenna ground noise filter. See Noise Filter - Ground - Antenna (Remove and Replace).
  42. Connect the liftgate handle assembly electrical connector.
  43. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the liftgate handle to the liftgate.
    14.4 Nm (10.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket

    Support the liftgate handle from the interior.
  44. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the liftgate latch to the liftgate.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T30 socket
  45. Install the liftgate latch power release cable to the liftgate.

  46. Connect the cable to the liftgate high force cinching actuator, and then position the actuator into the liftgate.

  47. Install the bolts (x3) that attach the liftgate cinching actuator to the liftgate.
    3 Nm (2.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  48. Close the liftgate to check for gap/flush and that the latch closes as expected.

    Adjust the hinges if necessary, and then open the liftgate when done.
  49. Connect the electrical harness to the high mounted brake light assembly.

    Secure the clip onto the liftgate.
  50. Install the RH catch basin cover.

    Position the electrical harness onto the catch basin cover.
  51. Install the LH catch basin cover.
  52. Position the electrical harness into the vehicle and secure the grommet.
  53. Install the bolt that attaches the ground strap to the body.
    9 Nm (6.6 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  54. Install the clips (x5) that attach the liftgate electrical harness to the body.
  55. Connect the liftgate harness electrical connectors.

    Secure the locking tabs.
  56. Install the partially released headliner corner. Secure the headliner with clips (x7).
  57. Install the RH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  58. Install the RH mid C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Mid - LH (Remove and Replace).
  59. Install the RH trunk sill trim. See Trim - Sill - Trunk (Remove and Replace).
  60. Install the liftgate upper trim. See Trim - Upper - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  61. Install the liftgate speaker grille. Grille - Speaker - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
  62. Install the lower liftgate trim. See Trim - Liftgate - Lower (Remove and Replace).
  63. Close the liftgate.
  64. Fold 2nd row seats into vertical position, if equipped.
  65. Close the LH and RH rear doors.
  66. Move the driver and front passenger seats back to their original position.
  67. Close the LH and RH front doors.
