Mount - Rear Drive Unit - LH (Remove and Replace)

  1. Move the vehicle to a 2 post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  2. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  3. Release the electronic parking brake. See Park Brake Caliper - Release - Toolbox.
  4. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  5. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  6. Disconnect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  7. Set the high voltage multimeter to DC voltage, lightly touch the probes to the auxiliary battery connector contacts, and verify that the multimeter displays a voltage.

    Note
    Battery voltage is typically 14.5 to 15.5 volts.
  8. Remove the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace)
  9. Remove the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace).
  10. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  11. Remove the rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  12. Remove the mid aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Mid (Remove and Replace).
  13. Perform the vehicle electrical isolation procedure. See Vehicle Electrical Isolation Procedure.
  14. Remove the rear fascia diffuser. See Diffuser - Rear Fascia (Remove and Replace).
  15. Remove the rear subframe. See Subframe Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
  16. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the rear subframe stiffener to the rear subframe, and then remove the stiffener from the subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  17. Remove the bolt and release the clips (x2) that attach the ground strap to the rear drive unit and rear subframe, and then remove the ground strap from the subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  18. Pull on red release tab, pull tab again to disconnect the rear subframe electrical harness from the rear drive unit resolver connector, release the clips (x2) that attach the electrical harness to the RH side of the rear drive unit, and move the electrical harness aside.
  19. Press the locking tab, disconnect the rear subframe electrical harness from the logic connector, release the clip that attaches the electrical harness to the LH side of the rear drive unit, and move the electrical harness aside.
  20. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH ride height sensor arm to the LH upper fore link.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
  21. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH upper aft link to the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  22. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH upper fore link to the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  23. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH toe link to the rear subframe.

    Note
    Support the knuckle while removing.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm socket
  24. Install the axle removal tool around the inner joint of the LH rear halfshaft.

    Note
    Make sure that the cable loop is not wrapped around the inner boot.
  25. Use the slide hammer to release the LH rear halfshaft from the rear drive unit.
  26. Repeat step 17 through step 22 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  27. Remove the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain return hose to the subframe.
  28. Remove the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain supply hose to the subframe.
  29. Position the subframe lift underneath the gantry.
  30. Use the hooks (x3) to attach the drive unit sling tool to the rear drive unit.
  31. Attach the drive unit sling tool to the gantry.
  32. Use the gantry to raise the drive unit sling tool so that there is slight tension in the cables.
  33. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the LH side of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  34. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the RH side of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  35. Remove the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the rear of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  36. With the help of an assistant, use the gantry to raise the rear drive unit sling tool, guide halfshafts away from the rear drive unit, and separate the rear drive unit up from the rear subframe.
  37. Move the rear subframe and subframe lift out from underneath the rear drive unit.
  38. Place a coolant catcher below the rear drive unit.
  39. Secure the rear drive unit HV harness away from the draining coolant.
  40. Release the spring clip, disconnect the inverter to oil cooler hose from the rear drive inverter, and then allow the coolant to drain.

    Plug the hose and inverter as needed.
  41. Remove the clip that attaches the inverter to oil cooler hose to the LH rear drive unit mount.
  42. Lower the rear drive unit onto an empty pallet, and then place a wood block under the stator to keep the assembly upright.
  43. Remove the bolts (x3) that attach the LH rear drive unit mount to the rear drive unit assembly, and then remove the mount from the assembly.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft) 55 degrees
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • E14 socket
  44. Position the LH rear drive unit mount to the rear drive unit assembly, and then install the bolts (x3) that attach the mount to the assembly.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft) 55 degrees

    Follow the torque sequence in the image.

    • E14 socket
  45. Raise the rear drive unit from the empty pallet.
  46. Install the clip that attaches the inverter to oil cooler hose to the LH rear drive unit mount.
  47. Remove the plugs, connect the inverter to oil cooler hose to the rear drive inverter, and then install the spring clip.

    Note
    Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the hose if fully seated.
  48. Release the rear drive unit HV harness.
  49. Remove the coolant catcher from under the rear drive unit.
  50. Move the rear subframe and subframe lift to underneath the rear drive unit.
  51. With the help of an assistant, use the gantry to lower the rear drive unit sling tool, guide halfshafts away from the rear drive unit, and lower the rear drive unit into the rear subframe.
  52. Lower the rear drive unit sling tool so as to install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the rear of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  53. Install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the RH side of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  54. Install and hand tighten the bolt that attaches the rear drive unit to the LH side of the rear subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  55. Lower the drive unit sling tool to release tension in the cables, and then remove the sling tool from the gantry.
  56. Remove the hooks (x3), and then remove the drive unit sling tool from the rear drive unit.
  57. Tighten the rear drive unit mount bolts (x3).
    120 Nm (88.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
  58. Install the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain supply hose to the subframe.
  59. Install the clips (x2) that attach the powertrain return hose to the subframe.
  60. Continue installing the rear drive unit into the rear subframe. See Drive Unit - Rear (Remove and Install).
  61. Install the rear subframe into the vehicle. See Subframe Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
  62. Install the rear wheels. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  63. Connect LV power. See LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  64. Remove coolant bottle cap.
  65. Hold brake pedal and select park on the UI to disable EPB service mode.
  66. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  67. In Toolbox, click the Actions/Autodiag tab, search for "Purge", click Coolant Air PurgeTEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGEGen3/tasks/TEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGE Model3/tasks/TEST_VCFRONT_X_THERMAL-COOLANT-AIR-PURGELow Voltage Controllers Low Voltage ControllersThermal / Actions - Coolant Air PurgeService Mode Service Plus Factory Mode Developer Thermal / Coolant System - Coolant Air PurgeService Mode Service Plus Factory Mode Developer hv / Procedures - Transport Service Plus Developer , click Run, and allow the routine to complete.

    Note
    Make sure the vehicle is not in drive state. Putting vehicle into drive state will stop this routine. Monitor the levels as required.
  68. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary.

    Ensure that the fluid level is at the Max line.
  69. Install the coolant bottle cap.
  70. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  71. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Install).
  72. Install the front underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Front (Remove and Replace).
  73. Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace)
  74. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  75. Calibrate the rear doors.

    Note
    If the "Calibration Needed" message appears on the vehicle touchscreen, touch and hold Calibrate to calibrate the rear doors.
  76. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
