Airbag - Knee - Front Passenger (Remove and Replace)

Make sure 12V/LV power has been disconnected for at least 1 minute before disconnecting the electrical harness from Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) components, such as Restraint Control Module, sensors, airbags, etc. Failure to do so can result in unintended safety system behaviors. Torque Specifications

  • ¼ in std ratchet
  • Wiha TorqueVario-S 0.8 Nm - 2.0 Nm screwdriver (installation only)
    • Wiha ¼ in bit holder adapter
    • Wiha torque setter
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter

Remove

  1. Remove the 2nd row lower seat cushion. See Seat Cushion - Lower - 2nd Row (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Disconnect 12V power. See 12V/LV Power (Disconnect and Connect).
  4. Remove the passenger footwell cover. See Cover - Footwell - Passenger (LHD) (Remove and Replace).
  5. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the front passenger knee airbag to the instrument panel.
    2 Nm (1.5 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Torx T20 socket
    • ¼ in std ratchet
    • ¼ in torque wrench (installation only)
    • 2 in extension
  6. While supporting the front passenger knee airbag, remove and discard the bolts (x4) that attach the front passenger knee airbag to the instrument panel.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    or
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    For Torx T20, use:
    • Torx T20 socket
    • ¼ in std ratchet
    • ¼ in torque wrench (installation only)
    • 2 in extension
    For Torx E10, use:
    • External Torx E10
    • ¼ in std ratchet
    • Wiha TorqueVario-S 0.8 Nm - 2.0 Nm screwdriver (installation only)
      • Wiha ¼ in bit holder adapter
      • Wiha torque setter
      • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector from the front passenger knee airbag.
  8. Remove the front passenger knee airbag and closeout trim panel as an assembly from the vehicle.
  9. Unhook the tabs (x11) that attach the front passenger knee airbag to the closeout trim panel, and then remove the airbag from the panel.

Install

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Install new Torx External E10 bolts (x4) on the front passenger knee air bag. Do not use Torx T30 bolts (pictured).

Replace all patchbolts.
