Glass - Backlight (Non-Heat Pump) (Remove and Replace)

Warning
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses when performing this procedure.
CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.
CAUTION
New glass components (windshield, roof, door, and fixed glass) must be inspected before installation to meet Tesla’s internal standards of quality. Perform the inspection described in Pre-Installation Glass Inspection before beginning this procedure.
Remove
-
Open all the doors and fully lower all the windows.
NoteIf the vehicle is being powered down, latch the rear doors to prevent accidental closure.
- Move the LH and RH front seats fully forward.
- Remove the LH 2nd row seat side bolster. See Bolster - Side - Seat - 2nd Row - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH side rail trim. See Trim - Side Rail - LH (Remove and Install).
- Remove the LH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).

Release the clip and tabs (x4) that attach the LH rear C-pillar trim to the body, and then set the trim aside.
NotePull the rear of the trim forward, and then upward to remove it.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Plastic trim tool

Disconnect the backlight electrical connector from the FM antenna amplifier.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Pick Miniature Soft Grip, 90 degree tip, 6 in

Disconnect the backlight glass heater ground strap from the LH C-pillar.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Pick Miniature Soft Grip, 90 degree tip, 6 in
- Remove the RH 2nd row seat side bolster. See Bolster - Side - Seat - 2nd Row - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the RH side rail trim. See Trim - Side Rail - LH (Remove and Install).
- Remove the RH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).

Release the clip and tabs (x4) that attach the RH rear C-pillar trim to the body, and then set the trim aside.
NotePull the rear of the trim forward, and then upward to remove it.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:

Disconnect the backlight harness electrical connector from the tuner.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Plastic trim tool

Disconnect the antenna connector from the tuner.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Small flat head screwdriver

Release the clip that attaches the antenna harness to the body.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Clip pry tool

Disconnect the antenna harness from the tuner and body harness.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Small flat head screwdriver
- Remove the package tray trim. See Trim - Package Tray (Remove and Replace).

Remove the RH side antenna harness from the backlight glass.
NotePeel the tape back found at each end of harness housing seal.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Plastic trim tool

Disconnect the RH harness electrical connector from the heater grid.
CAUTIONGently disconnect the harness. Do not damage the heater grid.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Pick Miniature Soft Grip, 90 degree tip, 6 in

Remove the LH side antenna harness from the backlight glass.
NotePeel the tape back found at each end of harness housing seal.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Plastic trim tool

Disconnect the LH harness electrical connector from the heater grid.
CAUTIONGently disconnect the harness. Do not damage the heater grid.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Pick Miniature Soft Grip, 90 degree tip, 6 in
- Use the exterior switch to open the trunk.

Remove the rear seal from the backlight glass.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Plastic trim tool
- Needle nose pliers
-
Remove the front seal from the backlight glass.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Plastic trim tool
- Needle nose pliers
-
Prepare the WRD Spider 3 glass removal kit.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- WRD Spider 3 - 1571168-00-A
-
Secure the wire to the starter tool, and then insert the starter tool from the inside of the vehicle through the adhesive bead at the bottom area of the backlight glass.
CAUTIONUse the guard to prevent damage to the rear deck panel while using the starter tool.

Release the line from the starter tool and wrap the line around the exterior of the backlight glass assembly.
NotePull the line away from the starter tool. Make sure enough length is pulled through.NoteVerify the line sits underneath the glass and seal.

Attach the anchor point to the interior of the backlight glass assembly, and then secure the line to the anchor.

Secure the interior side of the line to the Spider cutting tool.
NoteFollow the instructions on the Spider tool. Feed the line through the opening of the cutting tool and tie a knot to secure the line in place. If the spindle is not turned the proper direction, the cutting tool will be damaged.

Secure the Spider cutting tool to the interior side of the backlight glass assembly.
NoteNote the orientation of the cutting line. Make sure the line wraps over the large pulley and holds a 90 degree angle.

Secure the angle driver to the electric drill.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Battery powered drill - 1126456-00-A

Turn the spindle on the cutting tool with the drill to start removing the backlight glass assembly.
CAUTIONUse the plastic guard to protect the headliner and package tray assembly during removal.NoteMove the cutting tool as needed, keeping the line close to a 90 degree angle.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Dash protector

Secure suction cups (x2) to the backlight glass at each side.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Double suction cup handle - 1080599-00-A
-
With an assistant, remove the backlight glass from the vehicle.
NoteLift up on glass from interior of vehicle to ease removal. Lower the trunk right before latching.

Use a scraper to carefully remove the old urethane from the vehicle.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Razor blade scraper - 1064740-00-A
- Winged scraper set - 1080601-00-A
- Use IPA wipes to clean the urethane path on the vehicle. Allow 1 minute dry time.
Install

If necessary, remove and install a new power strut. See Power Strut - Trunk (Remove and Replace).
NoteThis is only applied for vehicles before 2022/08/25 in China, or vehicles before 2022/08/12 in APAC and Europe.
- Use IPA wipes to clean the backlight glass under the suction cups if necessary. Allow 1 minute dry time.

Secure suction cups (x2) to the backlight glass at each side.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Double suction cup handle - 1080599-00-A
- With an assistant, position the backlight glass onto the vehicle for a dry fit and note any locations where the net pads need to be adjusted.

Check the gap and flush of the backlight glass to the body before fully seating the backlight glass.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Glass gap and flush tool - 1588903-00-A
-
If necessary, perform net pad adjustment.
- With an assistant, remove the backlight glass and set it on a stand.
- Clean the urethane path on the vehicle with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) wipe. Allow the surface to dry before continuing to the next step.

Apply urethane primer to the vehicle along the old urethane path and in areas that were damaged during removal of the backlight glass.
NoteAllow the primer to dry for at least 2 minutes before continuing.

Apply urethane primer to the backlight glass along the old urethane path.
NoteAllow the primer to dry for at least 2 minutes before continuing.

Apply urethane to the body following the original path.
NoteMake sure that the urethane bead has a triangular cross-section of approximate width 8 mm and height 13 mm.

Prepare the caulking gun and urethane.
NoteThe opening must be 8mm wide and 13mm tall.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Caulk and adhesive gun - 1080593-00-A
- Portable bench - 1054720-00-A
- Retractable blade knife

Apply urethane to the body following the original path.
NoteMake sure that the urethane bead has a triangular cross-section of approximate width 8 mm and height 13 mm.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Caulk and adhesive gun - 1080593-00-A
- Open the trunk.
- With an assistant, install the backlight glass on the vehicle.

Check the gap and flush of the backlight glass to the body before fully seating the backlight glass.
Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Glass gap and flush tool - 1588904-00-A
- Close the trunk.
- Remove the suction cups from the backlight glass.
-
Connect the antenna harness to the tuner and body harness.
-
Install the clip that attaches the antenna harness to the body.
-
Connect the antenna connector to the tuner.
-
Connect the RH harness electrical connector to the heater grid.
-
Install the RH side antenna harness on the backlight glass.
NoteApply a small piece of tape at each end of the seal clip.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Harness tape
- Scissors
-
Connect the backlight harness electrical connector to the tuner.
-
Connect the backlight glass heater ground strap to the LH C-pillar.
-
Connect the LH harness electrical connector to the heater grid.
-
Install the LH side antenna harness on the backlight glass.
NoteApply a small piece of tape at each end of the seal clip.Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
- Harness tape
- Scissors

Connect the backlight electrical connector to the FM antenna amplifier.
- Install the package tray trim. See Trim - Package Tray (Remove and Replace).

Install the clip and tabs (x4) that attach the LH rear C-pillar trim to the body.
NoteSlide the back tabs into package tray, and then push the front tabs toward the rear.
- Install the LH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Install the LH side rail trim. See Trim - Side Rail - LH (Remove and Install).
- Install the LH 2nd row seat side bolster. See Bolster - Side - Seat - 2nd Row - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Raise the LH 2nd row seat.
- Repeat step 30 through step 34 for the RH side of the vehicle.
- Move the LH and RH front seats to the original positions.

If the vehicle has alerts pertaining to the rear defroster, perform these additional steps to re-enable the rear defroster.
- Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
- In Toolbox, click the Actions tab, type "Defrost" into the search field, click on PROC_VCRIGHT_REAR_DEFROST-RE-ENABLEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Closures ➜ Windows ➜ Enable Rear Defrost, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
- Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
- Raise all the windows and close all the doors.

Remove the masking tape after the urethane has cured.
CAUTIONDo not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. Dow Betaseal Express has a drive-away time of 1 hour minimum in temperatures of 0˚F (-18˚C) or warmer. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
