Glass - Backlight (Non-Heat Pump) (Remove and Install)

CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

Remove

  1. Open all the doors and fully lower all the windows.

    If the vehicle is being powered down, latch the rear doors to prevent accidental closure.
  2. Move the LH and RH front seats fully forward.
  3. Remove the LH 2nd row seat side bolster. See Bolster - Side - Seat - 2nd Row - LH (Remove and Replace).
  4. Remove the LH side rail trim. See Trim - Side Rail - LH (Remove and Install).
  5. Remove the LH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  6. Release the clip and tabs (x4) that attach the LH rear C-pillar trim to the body, and then set the trim aside.

    Pull the rear of the trim forward, and then upward to remove it.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Plastic trim tool
  7. Disconnect the backlight electrical connector from the FM antenna amplifier.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Pick Miniature Soft Grip, 90 degree tip, 6 in
  8. Disconnect the backlight glass heater ground strap from the LH C-pillar.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Pick Miniature Soft Grip, 90 degree tip, 6 in
  9. Remove the RH 2nd row seat side bolster. See Bolster - Side - Seat - 2nd Row - LH (Remove and Replace).
  10. Remove the RH side rail trim. See Trim - Side Rail - LH (Remove and Install).
  11. Remove the RH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  12. Release the clip and tabs (x4) that attach the RH rear C-pillar trim to the body, and then set the trim aside.

  13. Disconnect the backlight harness electrical connector from the tuner.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Plastic trim tool
  14. Disconnect the antenna connector from the tuner.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Small flat head screwdriver
  15. Release the clip that attaches the antenna harness to the body.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Clip pry tool
  16. Disconnect the antenna harness from the tuner and body harness.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Small flat head screwdriver
  17. Remove the package tray trim. See Trim - Package Tray (Remove and Replace).
  18. Remove the RH side antenna harness from the backlight glass.

    Peel the tape back found at each end of harness housing seal.

  19. Disconnect the RH harness electrical connector from the heater grid.

  20. Remove the LH side antenna harness from the backlight glass.

    Peel the tape back found at each end of harness housing seal.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Plastic trim tool
  21. Disconnect the LH harness electrical connector from the heater grid.

    Gently disconnect the harness. Do not damage the heater grid.

    • Pick Miniature Soft Grip, 90 degree tip, 6 in
  22. Use the exterior switch to open the trunk.
  23. Apply masking tape to the exterior of the LH and RH roof pillars to protect the paint from damage.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Masking tape
  24. Secure suction cups (x2) to the backlight glass at each side.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Double suction cup handle - 1080599-00-A
  25. Insert the wire starter tool from inside the vehicle through the adhesive bead at the bottom area of the backlight glass.

    Use protective gear.

    • Wire starter - 1080619-00-A
  26. Insert the end of the nylon cord through the eye of the wire starter tool and pull it into the inside of the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Equalizer python - 1080596-00-A
  27. Use IPA wipes to clean the backlight glass roof.
  28. Position the python cup assembly in the center of the backlight glass.

    Note
    When setting up the python cup assembly, make sure that the surface of the tool and glass are dry, clean and dust free.
  29. Tie a bowline knot in the end of nylon cord, and then insert loop through the anchor tab on the python cup assembly.

    Bring the loop over the end of the anchor tab to lock in place.
  30. Install the slither unit on the backlight glass.

    When setting up the slither unit, make sure that the surface of the tool and glass are dry, clean and dust free.
  31. Pull nylon cord from cup assembly around slither unit in the backlight glass.

    Turn the python cup assembly handle until the nylon cord is taught.
  32. Position the nylon cord around backlight glass from the outside of the vehicle.

    Keep the nylon cord against the glass, avoid possibly damage to the pinchweld.
  33. Insert the wire starter tool through the adhesive bead second time of the backlight glass.

    Use protective gear. Second insertion should be near the right side of the original insertion.
  34. Pull the nylon cord into the backlight glass inside of the vehicle.
  35. Tie a stopper knot on the loose end of the nylon cord then insert into the notched slot on the python cup assembly.
  36. Turn the handle bar on the python cup assembly so that reeling the nylon cord to cut the urethane securing backlight glass to body. Cut in a counter-clockwise motion over the top of the backlight glass to the lower side of the LH C-pillar. Return to the starting point in a clockwise motion and continue past the bottom of the backlight glass to the lower side of the LH C-pillar.

    CAUTION
    Use caution when working around the headliner area.
  37. Release the equalizer python tabs (x4), and then remove the equalizer python from the backlight glass.

    Push the tabs at the cup to let air in to release.
  38. With an assistant, remove the backlight glass from the vehicle.

    Note
    Lift up on glass from interior of vehicle to ease removal. Lower the trunk right before latching.
  39. Use a scraper to carefully remove the old urethane from the vehicle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Razor blade scraper - 1064740-00-A
    • Winged scraper set - 1080601-00-A
  40. Use a scraper to carefully remove the old seal from the backlight glass.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • CRL razor adhesive scraper
  41. Use a scraper to remove the old urethane from the backlight glass.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Winged scraper set - 1080601-00-A
  42. Use IPA wipes to clean the urethane path on the vehicle. Allow 1 minute dry time.
  43. Use IPA wipes to clean the surface of the backlight glass. Allow 1 minute dry time.

Install

  1. Use masking tape to tape the backlight glass antenna connectors to the backlight glass.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Masking tape
  2. Peel the adhesive backing off the new seal at the corner, and then slowly apply the adhesive backing to the adhesive path on the backlight glass.

    Note
    Firmly press the seal onto the glass during installation. Ensure the adhesive is installed as close to the edge of the glass as possible.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Pressure roller - 1465974-00-A
  3. Peel the adhesive backing off at the end of the new trunk flip seal, and then slowly apply the seal to the old adhesive path on the backlight glass.

    Note
    Start by installing the trunk flip seal where the backlight glass seal ends. Firmly press the seal onto the glass during installation. Ensure the adhesive is installed as close to the edge of the glass as possible.

    There will be overlap at the end of the seal. Cutting the seal is in the next step.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Pressure roller - 1465974-00-A
  4. Cut the trunk flip seal overlap.

    Note
    Trunk flip seal may overlap the backlight glass seal. Cut off the trunk flip seal as needed to properly fit to backlight glass.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Scissors
  5. Install the new side net pads (x6), upper net pads (x3), and rear net pads (x3) onto the backlight glass.

    Install net pads to old adhesive path as needed, as the number may vary.

  6. With an assistant, position the backlight glass onto the vehicle for a dry fit and note any locations where the net pads need to be adjusted.
  7. If necessary, perform net pad adjustment as follows:
    1. Cut teflon tape into rectangles having dimensions 5mm x 20mm.
    2. With an assistant, remove the backlight glass and set it on a stand.
      Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
      • Portable bench - 1054720-00-A
    3. Apply the teflon tape rectangles to the net pads where adjustment is needed.

      Note
      Make sure that the edges of the tape rectangles align with the edges of the net pads.
    4. With an assistant, position the backlight glass onto the vehicle and check the net pads fitment.
    5. Repeat step 7.a through step 7.d to adjust the net pads.
  8. With an assistant, remove the backlight glass and set it on a stand.
  9. Apply urethane primer to the vehicle along the old urethane path and in areas that were damaged during removal of the backlight glass.

    Allow the primer to dry for at least 2 minutes before continuing.
  10. Apply urethane primer to the backlight glass along the old urethane path.

  11. Remove the masking tape from the exterior C-pillars.
  12. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane.

    The opening must be 8mm wide and 13mm tall.

    • Caulk and adhesive gun - 1080593-00-A
    • Portable bench - 1054720-00-A
    • Retractable blade knife
  13. Apply urethane to the body following the original path.

    Note
    Make sure that the urethane bead has a triangular cross-section of approximate width 8 mm and height 13 mm.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Caulk and adhesive gun - 1080593-00-A
  14. Open the trunk.
  15. With an assistant, install the backlight glass on the vehicle.
  16. Check the gap and flush of the backlight glass to the body before fully seating the backlight glass.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Glass gap and flush tool - 1588904-00-A
  17. Close the trunk.
  18. Fully seat the backlight glass, check the gap and flush, and adjust as necessary.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Gap/Flush measuring tool
  19. Use IPA wipes to clean any debris or visible urethane from the backlight glass and body. Allow 1 minute dry time.
  20. Apply masking tape to attach the backlight glass to the body while the urethane cures.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Masking tape
  21. Remove the suction cups from the backlight glass.
  22. Connect the antenna harness to the tuner and body harness.
  23. Install the clip that attaches the antenna harness to the body.
  24. Connect the antenna connector to the tuner.
  25. Connect the RH harness electrical connector to the heater grid.
  26. Install the RH side antenna harness on the backlight glass.

    Apply a small piece of tape at each end of the seal clip.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Harness tape
    • Scissors
  27. Connect the backlight harness electrical connector to the tuner.
  28. Connect the backlight glass heater ground strap to the LH C-pillar.
  29. Connect the LH harness electrical connector to the heater grid.
  30. Install the LH side antenna harness on the backlight glass.

    • Harness tape
    • Scissors
  31. Connect the backlight electrical connector to the FM antenna amplifier.
  32. Install the package tray trim. See Trim - Package Tray (Remove and Replace).
  33. Install the clip and tabs (x4) that attach the LH rear C-pillar trim to the body.

    Slide the back tabs into package tray, and then push the front tabs toward the rear.
  34. Install the LH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
  35. Install the LH side rail trim. See Trim - Side Rail - LH (Remove and Install).
  36. Install the LH 2nd row seat side bolster. See Bolster - Side - Seat - 2nd Row - LH (Remove and Replace).
  37. Raise the LH 2nd row seat.
  38. Repeat step 33 through step 37 for the RH side of the vehicle.
  39. Move the LH and RH front seats to the original positions.
  40. Raise all the windows and close all the doors.
  41. Remove the masking tape after the urethane has cured.

    CAUTION
    Do not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. Dow Betaseal Express has a drive-away time of 1 hour minimum in temperatures of 0˚F (-18˚C) or warmer. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
