EXV Core - Supermanifold (Remove and Replace)

This procedure requires the A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge) procedure to be performed. If not already automatically added to the Service Visit, add correction code 18200102 as a separate activity to the Service Visit.

Reuse/Replace

Remove

  1. Set up the AC machine.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  3. Enable Service Mode via vehicle touchscreen. See Service Mode.
  4. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
  5. On the touchscreen, touch Service Mode > Thermal > Refrigerant System > Start Thermal Fill Drain (Refrigerant Only) and select Run, and then allow the routine to complete.
  6. Disconnect the LV power. See LV Battery - Li-lon (Disconnect and Connect).
  7. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  8. Recover the A/C refrigerant. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge) (Maintenance).
  9. Remove the bolt that attaches the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line to the supermanifold.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 6 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  10. Remove the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line from the supermanifold, and move it aside.

    Carefully position the line so that oil does not drip out.
  11. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the high pressure and temperature sensor.

    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.
  12. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the recirc EXV (expansion valve).

    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.
  13. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the liquid cooled condenser EXV.

    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.
  14. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the liquid cooled condenser shut off valve.

  15. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the right side cabin condenser EXV.

  16. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the high pressure and temperature subcool sensor.

  17. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the left side cabin condenser EXV.

    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.
  18. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the chiller EXV.

  19. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the evap EXV.

  20. Move thermal harness from supermanifold to side.
  21. Use a pick to pull the locking tab downward, and then pull toward the front of the vehicle to remove the EXV coil.
  22. Remove the EXV core from the supermanifold.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 1588741-00-A - HVAC Socket Kit
    • 3 in extension
    • 3/8 to 1/2 in Adapter
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench

Install

  1. Lubricate the EXV threads and O-rings with the appropriate A/C oil. See Fluids and Capacities for A/C oil specifications. Then hand-start the valve into the supermanifold.

  2. Fully torque the EXV on the supermanifold.
    19 Nm (14.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 1588741-00-A - HVAC Socket Kit
    • 3 in extension
    • 3/8 to 1/2 in Adapter
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  3. Install the EXV coil onto the EXV.

    Note
    Slide the coil seal onto the expansion valve. Do not lubricate the coil seal. Properly align the expansion valve coil locking tab to the supermanifold. Slide the expansion valve coil over the coil seal. Perform a push pull push test on the expansion valve coil to ensure the coils is properly latched.
  4. Route thermal harness back to supermanifold.
  5. Connect the electrical connectors that were disconnected during removal, and then engage the connector locks.
  6. Connect the electrical connector from the evap EXV, and then engage the connector lock.
  7. Connect the electrical connector from the chiller EXV, and then engage the connector lock.
  8. Connect the electrical connector from the left side cabin condenser EXV, and then engage the connector lock.
  9. Connect the electrical connector from the high pressure and temperature subcool sensor, and then engage the connector lock.
  10. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the right side cabin condenser EXV, and then engage the connector lock.
  11. Connect the electrical connector from the liquid cooled condenser shut off valve, and then engage the connector lock.
  12. Connect the electrical connector from the liquid cooled condenser EXV, and then engage the connector lock.
  13. Connect the electrical connector from the recirc EXV (expansion valve), and then engage the connector lock.
  14. Connect the electrical connector from the high pressure and temperature sensor, and then engage the connector lock.
  15. Install new seal washers on the supermanifold side of the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line, and then lubricate the washers with a small amount of the appropriate A/C oil. See Fluids and Capacities for A/C oil specifications.
  16. Position the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line on the supermanifold, and then hand tighten the bolt that attaches the A/C line to the supermanifold.
  17. Tighten the bolt that attaches the A/C line to the supermanifold.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 6 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  18. Perform the vacuum leak test and oil injection. See Vacuum Leak Test and Oil Injection.
  19. Recharge the A/C refrigerant. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge) (Maintenance).

    CAUTION
    Recharge the refrigerant exactly as instructed. Failure to adhere to the instructions can cause catastrophic damage to the cooling system.

    Note
    Do not disconnect the laptop from the vehicle yet.
  20. Connect the LV battery power. See LV Battery - Li-lon (Disconnect and Connect).
  21. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
  22. Access the thermal system routines on the touchscreen: Touch Quick Controls > Service Mode > Diagnostics > Thermal.
  23. Perform the heat pump commissioning through UI: Touch Thermal > Sensors and Valves > Run Heat Pump Commissioning, and then touch Run.

  24. Perform the thermal performance test through UI: Touch Thermal > Actions > Test Thermal Performance, and then touch Run.

  25. Perform the HVAC performance test through UI: Touch Thermal > Actions > Test HVAC Performance, and then touch Run.

  28. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
