Front Drive Unit Assembly - Electric Oil Pump (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Stands.
  2. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  3. Disconnect the LV battery power. See LV Battery - Li-lon (Disconnect and Connect).
  4. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Front Undertray - Model 3/Y, Front Aero Shield (Remove and Replace).
  5. Support the LH side of the front drive unit with an underhoist stand (1081765-00-A).
  6. Remove the bolt that attaches the front drive unit to the front subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 18 mm socket
    • Cordless 3/8in Dr Impact
  7. Carefully lower the front underhoist stand until the front drive unit oil pump is accessible.
  8. Position an oil drain container under the front drive unit oil filter area.
  9. Pull the red locking tab to disconnect the oil pump connector, and then remove the oil filter from the front drive unit.
  10. Remove the fill plug from the front drive unit.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  11. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the oil pump to the front drive unit, and then remove the oil pump from the front drive unit.

    CAUTION
    Carefully pry the pump away from the front drive unit to avoid damage to the plastic and the castings.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Socket 1/4in Dr EP10 - 1451830-00-A
    • Cordless 1/4in Dr Ratchet
    • 4 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
    • Torque wrench with angle measurement
  12. Remove the fill plug from the front drive unit, and wait for 10 minutes for the oil to naturally flow out until it reaches the droplet state.
  13. Inspect the 3 O-rings on the removed oil pump, the O-ring on the removed fill plug, and the seal on the removed oil filter. Make sure that no O-ring or seal is left in the housing or damaged.

    Replace all damaged components.

Install

  1. Install the new oil pump assembly to the front drive unit.

    Lightly coat the O-rings with clean KAF 1.
  2. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the oil pump to the front drive unit.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Socket 1/4in Dr EP10 - 1451830-00-A
    • Cordless 1/4in Dr Ratchet
    • 4 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
    • Torque wrench with angle measurement
  3. Install the new oil filter to the front drive unit.
    3 Nm (2.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Oil filter socket
    • 21 mm socket
    • ¼ in to 3/8 in adapter
    • Torque wrench with angle measurement
  4. Lubricate the oil pump O-rings (x3) with fresh KAF 1 gearbox fluid, and then reinstall the oil pump onto the front drive unit assembly.

    Note
    Make sure that the oil pump O-rings are lubricated before installation onto the front drive unit.
  5. Set up the fill kit with KAF 1, fill the measuring container to 1500ml.
  6. Connect the 12V power supply to the oil pump.
  7. Install the fluid transfer pump.

    Note
    Trim both the input and output hoses to 26", insert the output hose into the fill hole until fully seated, and then pull back 5mm.
  8. Place the measured fluid container in the drain basket, fully submerge the input hose, then prime the pump with KAF 1 fluid.
  9. With assistance, pump KAF 1 fluid into the front drive unit.

    Note
    The assistant will run the oil pump switch box using XP-10 Jump Pack and have the front drive unit fill plug ready for installation.

    Note
    Do not run the pump dry. Pump 5 full strokes from fluid container while simultaneously running the oil pump switch box for entire fill process. Keep running the oil pump switch box until the drain plug is installed in the next step. If the pump is not running or the drain plug is not installed, fluid will drain from plug within 10 seconds.

    Note
    The minimum refill capacity of the front drive unit assembly is 1.3 liters. Using excess gearbox fluid in the fill container allows the oil pump to dispense the full 1.3L without drawing air. Make sure that there is less than 200mL left when completed. Pumping the full 1.5 liters is not required.
  10. Install the fill plug to the front drive unit.
    15 Nm (11.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  11. Disconnect the 12V power supply tool from the oil pump.
  12. Connect the oil pump connector.
  13. Remove the oil drain container from underneath the vehicle.
  14. Install the bolt that attaches the front drive unit to the front subframe.
    80 Nm (59.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 18 mm socket
    • Cordless 3/8in Dr Impact
  15. Remove the underhoist stand.
  16. Install the front aero shield panel. See Front Undertray - Model 3/Y, Front Aero Shield (Remove and Replace).
  17. Connect the LV battery power. See LV Battery - Li-lon (Disconnect and Connect).
  18. Locally connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  19. Reinstall the software. See Software Reinstall - Touchscreen.
  20. On the laptop, select Actions tab, and search for "Oil Pump Low Pressure Test - Front Drive Unit". Select , click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  21. Disconnect the laptop.
  22. Disable Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  23. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  24. Remove the lift arms from below the vehicle.
