Backlite Glass Assembly (Model 3 Standard) (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Open all four doors
  2. Lower all four windows.
  3. Move both front seats forward via Seat Controls on the touchscreen.
  4. Remove the LH side rail assembly.

    Pull the upper corner of the side rail then work downward. Pull the lower side rail toward RH to release the clips. Press down on tabs to release the clip that secures the tether strap onto the body.
  5. Fold the 2nd row 60 seatback down.
  6. Disconnect the LH antenna filter harness connector

    CAUTION
    Be careful not to damage the heater grid.
  7. Release the LH side backlight harness from the body
  8. Repeat the previous 4 steps for the RH side of the vehicle.
  9. Open the trunk.
  10. Apply masking tape to the exterior of both roof pillars to protect the paint.
  11. Insert the starter tool through the adhesive bead at the bottom area of backlight glass from the inside of the vehicle.

    CAUTION
    Use a guard to prevent damage to the rear deck panel.
  12. Release the line from the starter tool and wrap the line around the exterior of the backlight glass assembly.

    Note
    Ensure enough line is pulled through the glass. Verify that the line sits underneath the glass and seal.
  13. Attach an anchor point to the interior of the backlight glass assembly and secure the line to the anchor.
  14. Secure the interior side of the line to the spider cutting tool.

    CAUTION
    Follow instructions on the spider tool. Feed the line through the opening of the cutting tool and tie a knot to secure it in place. If the spindle is not turned in the proper direction, the cutting tool will be damaged.
  15. Secure the spider cutting tool to the interior side of backlight glass assembly.

    Note orientation of the cutting line. Make sure the line wraps over a large pully and holds at a 90° angle.
  16. Secure the angle driver to the electric drill.
  17. Turn the spindle on the cutting tool with the drill to start removing the backlight glass assembly.

    CAUTION
    Move the cutting tool as needed to keep the line close to a 90° angle. Use a plastic guard to protect the headliner and package tray assembly during removal.
  18. Remove the backlight assembly from the vehicle.

    DANGER
    Use an assisted lift whenever lifting the glass.

    Use suction cup handles (x2).

    TIp
    Lift up on the glass from the interior of the vehicle to ease removal. Lower the trunk right before latching.

Install

  1. Remove any old urethane from the vehicle.
  2. Wipe the urethane path on the vehicle with isopropyl alcohol. Allow a 1 minute dry time.
  3. Secure the double suction cup handles onto both side of the backlite glass.

    Clean the glass under the suction cups with isopropyl alcohol if needed. Allow 1 minute to dry.
  4. Position the glass onto the vehicle. Note any locations where net pads need to be adjusted.

  5. Check the gap and flush of glass to all surrounding areas.

  6. Remove the glass and place it upside down on a stand.

  7. Adjust the net pads as necessary.

    6x side edge net pads, 3x upper net pads, 3x rear net pads
  8. Apply urethane primer to the vehicle along the old urethane path.

    Make sure to add primer over any areas that were scratched during windshield removal. Allow the primer to dry before applying urethane.
  9. Apply urethane primer to the backlight glass along the old urethane path.

  10. Prepare the caulking gun and urethane.

    The opening in the tip must be 8 mm wide and 13 mm tall.
  11. Apply urethane to the body along the original path.
  12. Install the backlight glass onto the vehicle

    Lift with assistance. Open the trunk as needed.
  13. Remove the tape from the exterior of both roof pillars.
  14. Close the trunk.
  15. Check gaps and flushness to vehicle before fully seating windshield

  16. Wipe down any debris or visible urethane from the glass and body with isopropyl alcohol. Allow 1 minute to dry.
  17. Apply tape to secure the backlight glass to the body while the urethane cures.

    Reference dry time on the urethane. Remove the suction cups from the glass.
  18. Install the LH heater grid harness clip.
  19. Connect the LH antenna filter harness connector to the antenna grid connector.
  20. Install the LH side rail assembly.

    Note
    Install the clips (x4) that secure the tether strap onto the body. Align the clips from bottom to top, then press the clips from top to bottom. Align the seal to sit on top of the trim.
  21. Return the 2nd row 60 seatback to the vertical position.
  22. Repeat the previous 4 steps for the LH side of the vehicle.
  23. Move both front seats to their original positions.
  24. Connect to vehicle using toolbox 3.0. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  25. Select the Actions/Autodiag tab and search for ‘VCRIGHT’.
  26. Select via Toolbox: (link), click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  27. Remove the diagnostic cable from port to disconnect toolbox 3.0 from the vehicle.
  28. Raise all four windows
  29. Close all four doors
  30. Remove tape securing backlight glass to vehicle once urethane has cured
