Knuckle - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace)

  • 1137855-00-A TOOL, REAR RIDE HEIGHT TORQUE, MODEL 3
  • 1081765-00-A 3/4 TON UNDERHOIST STAND
  • 1459409-00-A ADAPTER, HUB JACK, MODEL 3

Remove

  1. Inspect the tires for abnormal wear.

    Note any abnormal tire wear that could indicate the need for an alignment.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. See GUID-0ECF2493-88F6-48E9-ADBB-9AE1D52E217C.html.
  3. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  4. Place the vehicle into "Towing" mode.
  5. Loosen the LH rear wheel lug nuts, but do not remove the wheel at this time. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  6. Loosen the LH rear halfshaft nut.
  7. Remove the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  8. Disconnect the LH rear EPB caliper connector.
  9. Remove and discard the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear caliper to the LH rear knuckle, remove the caliper from the knuckle, and allow the caliper to hang from an S-hook.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  10. Remove and discard the nut, and remove the washer that attach the LH halfshaft to the hub assembly.

    The washers are attached to the nut.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  11. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear brake rotor to the hub.

    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 10 mm socket
    • 2 in extension
  12. Remove the LH rear rotor from the vehicle.

    Note
    Store the rotor face down to reduce likelihood of damage to the rotor face.
  13. Remove the LH rear hub. See Hub - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  14. Remove the LH rear brake dust shield. See Brake Shield - Rear (Base Brakes) - LH (Remove and Replace).
  15. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear ABS wheel speed sensor to the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 4 in extension
  16. Remove the grommet that attaches the LH rear ABS wheel speed sensor cable to the knuckle.
  17. Remove the LH rear suspension cover. See Cover - Rear Suspension - LH (Remove and Replace).
  18. Install a spring compressor onto the LH rear suspension spring:

    Springs in a compressed state are under large amounts of energy. Refer to the Tool Profile for the spring compressor kit prior to performing this step for additional warnings and cautions.
  19. Remove and discard the nut that attaches the LH stabilizer bar drop link to the LH rear suspension knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 5 mm hex
    • 15 mm combination flex head wrench
    • 15 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  20. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear upper aft link to the LH rear suspension knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm combination wrench
    • 21 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  21. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear upper fore link to the knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm combination wrench
    • 18 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  22. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear toe link to the LH rear suspension knuckle.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless 3/8in Dr Impact
    • 18 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  23. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower fore link to the LH rear suspension knuckle.

    • 18 mm deep socket
    • 3 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  24. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower aft link to the knuckle.

    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 21 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  25. Remove the LH rear suspension knuckle from the vehicle.

Install

  1. Position the LH rear suspension knuckle on the rear suspension.
  2. Hand-tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower aft link to the LH rear knuckle.
  3. Install and hand-tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower fore link to the LH rear suspension knuckle.
  4. Position the LH rear toe link onto the knuckle, and then install and hand-tighten the bolt and nut.
    Tip: Recommend assistance when performing this step.
  5. Install the LH rear upper fore link to the knuckle and hand-tighten the nut and bolt.
  6. Position the LH rear upper aft link onto the knuckle, and then install and hand-tighten the bolt and nut.
  7. Install and tighten a new nut that attaches the LH stabilizer bar drop link to the LH rear suspension knuckle.
    55 Nm (40.6 lbs-ft)

    Counter-hold the ball joint with a 5 mm hex wrench.

    Mark the nut with a paint pen after installation.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 5 mm hex
    • 15 mm combination flex head wrench
    • 15 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  8. Install the grommet that attaches the LH rear ABS wheel speed sensor cable to the knuckle.
  9. Install the bolt that attaches the LH rear ABS wheel speed sensor to the knuckle.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 10 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 4 in extension
  10. Install the LH rear brake dust shield. See Brake Shield - Rear (Base Brakes) - LH (Remove and Replace).
  11. Install the LH rear hub. See Hub - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
  12. Install the washer and a new nut that attach the LH halfshaft to the hub assembly.
    300 Nm (221.2 lbs-ft)

    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 32 mm deep impact socket
  13. Install the LH rear rotor onto the vehicle.
  14. Install the hub jack adapter onto the LH rear hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts (x5).
  15. Position and raise the underhoist stand to simulate the suspension at ride height.
  16. Adjust the underhoist stand and/or spring compressor until the lower beam of the rear ride height torque tool rests against the bottom edge of the lower aft link, as illustrated.
  17. Measure the distance between the bottom of the quarter panel and the center of the rear axle to make sure that the rear suspension is set to ride height. The distance should measure 378 mm.
  18. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear upper aft link to the knuckle, and then mark the bolt and nut with a paint pen.
    134 Nm (98.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm combination wrench
    • 21 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  19. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear upper fore link to the knuckle, and then mark the bolt and nut with a paint pen.
    76 Nm (56.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 18 mm combination wrench
    • 18 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  20. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear toe link to the LH rear suspension knuckle. Mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    76 Nm (56.0 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless 3/8in Dr Impact
    • 18 mm socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  21. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower fore link to the knuckle, and then mark the bolt and nut with a paint pen.
    76 Nm (56.0 lbs-ft)
  22. Tighten the bolt and nut that attach the LH rear lower aft link to the LH rear knuckle, and then mark the bolt and nut with a paint pen.
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)

  23. Remove the underhoist stand from underneath the LH rear suspension.
  24. Remove the lug nuts (x5) that attach the hub jack adapter, and then remove the hub jack adapter from the vehicle.
  25. Install the bolt that attaches the LH rear brake rotor to the LH rear hub.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

  26. Install new bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear caliper to the LH rear knuckle.
    83 Nm (61.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • External Torx E18
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  27. Connect the LH rear EPB caliper connector.
  28. Remove the spring compressor from the LH rear suspension spring:

    Be careful while unloading the spring. Hold the spring horizontally and facing away from you.

  29. Install the LH rear suspension cover. See Cover - Rear Suspension - LH (Remove and Replace).
  30. Install the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  31. Tighten the LH rear halfshaft nut.
    300 Nm (221.2 lbs-ft)

  32. Exit the vehicle from "Towing" mode.
  33. Lower the vehicle. See GUID-0ECF2493-88F6-48E9-ADBB-9AE1D52E217C.html.
  34. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
  35. Refer to the Alignment Requirement tables to determine whether an EPAS alignment check (EC) or four wheel alignment check (AC) is necessary. If performed, add the alignment check/adjust as a separate activity. See Alignment Requirement - Suspension.
