Powertrain Coolant - Rear (Drain and Refill)

Drain

  1. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  2. Remove the cabin intake duct. See Assembly - Fresh Air Gutter - HVAC (Remove and Replace).
  3. Unlock the gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
  4. On the touchscreen, touch Service Mode > Thermal > Coolant System > Coolant Fill/Drain and select Run to start the "Start Thermal Fluid Fill/Drain (Coolant Only)" routine.

    Note
    If the routine takes more than 5 hours, perform the routine again.
  5. Disconnect LV power. See LV Battery - Li-lon (Disconnect and Connect).
  6. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  7. Remove the bolt that attaches the RH front wheel liner to the skid plate.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
  8. Remove the push clips (x3) that attach the lower rear edge of the RH front wheel liner to the vehicle for access to the coolant hose.
  9. Use a bungee strap to pull back the RH front wheel liner and attach it to the subframe.
  10. Position a coolant drain container underneath the front RH of the HV battery.
  11. Attach the coolant drain fitting adapter to the coolant cart drain hose.
  12. Release the spring clip, disconnect the powertrain return hose, plug the female side.
  13. Attach the coolant drain fitting adapter to the male side of the powertrain return tube.
  14. Release the spring clip, disconnect the powertrain supply hose, plug the male side.
  15. Attach the coolant drain and fill adapter to the female side.
  16. Turn the valve knob on the coolant drain and fill adapter to the horizontal position to close it.
  17. Connect the coolant drain and fill adapter to the coolant pressure tester cart, pre-set the pressure to 20 psi and close the valve on the tester cart.
  18. Connect the coolant pressure tester cart to a compressed air supply line.
  19. Turn the valve knob on the coolant drain and fill adapter to the vertical position to open it.
  20. Slowly open the valve on the coolant pressure tester cart.
  21. Wait at least 5 minutes for the coolant to fully drain.
  22. Close the valve on the coolant drain and fill adapter when no more coolant is expelled.
  23. Disconnect the coolant drain and fill adapter from the powertrain supply hose.
  24. Remove the plug, connect the powertrain supply hose, and then fasten the clip.

    Note
    Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure that the hose is secure.
  25. Disconnect the coolant drain fitting adapter from the male side of the powertrain return hose.
  26. Disconnect the coolant drain fitting adapter from the coolant cart drain hose.
  27. Remove the plug, connect the powertrain return hose, and then fasten the clip.

    Note
    Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure that the hose is secure.
  28. Disconnect the coolant drain and fill adapter from the coolant pressure tester cart.
  29. Disconnect the coolant pressure tester cart from the air supply line.
  30. Remove the coolant drain container from underneath the vehicle.

Refill

  1. Release the RH front wheel liner from the bungee strap, and remove the strap from the vehicle.
  2. Install the lower clips (x3) that attach the lower rear edge of the RH wheel arch liner to the body.
  3. Install the bolt that attaches the RH front wheel liner to the skid plate.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  4. Install the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  5. Refill the system with coolant. See Cooling System - Vacuum Refill.
  6. Exit Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  7. Install the cabin intake duct. See Assembly - Fresh Air Gutter - HVAC (Remove and Replace).
  8. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Rear (Remove and Replace).
