Service Kit - Chiller (Remove and Replace)

Note
This procedure requires the A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge) procedure to be performed. If not already automatically added to the Service Visit, add correction code 18200102 as a separate activity to the Service Visit.

Reuse

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See GUID-0ECF2493-88F6-48E9-ADBB-9AE1D52E217C.html.
  2. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  3. Enable Service Mode via vehicle touchscreen. See Service Mode.
  4. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
  5. On the touchscreen, touch Service Mode > Thermal > Refrigerant System > Start Thermal Fill Drain and select Run to start the "Start Thermal Fill Drain" routine.
  6. Disconnect the LV battery power. See LV Battery - Li-lon (Disconnect and Connect).
  7. Recover the A/C refrigerant. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge) (Maintenance).
  8. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  9. Position a fluid catcher underneath the front of the vehicle.
  10. Remove the coolant bottle cap. See Cap - Coolant Reservoir (Remove and Replace).
  11. Disconnect the powertrain bypass hose from the Supermanifold.

    Note
    Plug the hose and supermanifold as needed.
  12. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the Supermanifold.

    Plug the hose and supermanifold as needed.
  13. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the Supermanifold

    Plug the hose and supermanifold as needed.
  14. Remove the bolt that attaches the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line to the supermanifold.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 6 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  15. Remove the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line from the supermanifold, and then set it aside.

    Note
    Carefully position the line so that oil does not drip out.
  16. Release the locking tab, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the chiller EXV (expansion valve).

    CAUTION
    DO NOT push down on the red locking tab. Pull the tab away from the connector until the connector is unlocked, and then continue pulling to release the connector.
  17. Remove the chiller EXV coil.

    Note
    Release the locking tab at bottom of the coil and then remove it towards front of the vehicle.
  18. Remove the bolts (x4) that attach the chiller to Supermanifold.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket
    • 4 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • Ratchet/torque wrench

  19. Slightly release the RH side of chiller from Supermanifold and allow excess coolant to drain.

    Note
    Leave the AC ports intact to Supermanifold while coolant drains to avoid cross contamination.
  20. Remove chiller from Supermanifold.
  21. Remove and discard the chiller gasket from Supermanifold.

Install

  1. Install new chiller gasket into Supermanifold.

  2. Install the chiller to Supermanifold.

    Note
    Lubricate the O-rings on the chiller with the appropriate A/C oil. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge) (Maintenance) for A/C oil specifications. Then hand tighten the bolts that attach the chiller to Supermanifold.
  3. Torque the bolts (x4) that attach the chiller to Supermanifold in a cross-pattern.
    8 Nm (5.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket
    • 4 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  4. Install the chiller EXV coil.

    Note
    Align the coil locking tab to Supermanifold when installing.
  5. Connect the electrical connector on the chiller EXV.

    CAUTION
    Push the red locking tab towards the connector to engage the locking mechanism. DO NOT push down or pull up on the red locking tab.
  6. Install new seal washers on the supermanifold side of the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line, and then lubricate the washers with a small amount of the appropriate A/C oil. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge) (Maintenance) for A/C oil specifications.
  7. Position the supermanifold-to-compressor A/C line on the supermanifold, and then hand tighten the bolt that attaches the A/C line to the supermanifold.
  8. Tighten the bolt that attaches the A/C line to the supermanifold.
    22 Nm (16.2 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 8 mm socket
    • 4 in extension
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  9. Install the radiator inlet hose to Supermanifold.

    Note
    Remove plugs from both ends of coolant connections before installation. Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the hose is fully seated.
  10. Install the radiator outlet hose to Supermanifold.

  11. Install the powertrain bypass hose to Supermanifold.

    Remove plugs from both ends of coolant connections before installation. Perform a push-pull-push test to make sure the hose is fully seated.
  12. Remove the fluid catcher from underneath the vehicle.
  13. Install the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  14. Connect the LV battery power. See LV Battery - Li-lon (Disconnect and Connect).
  15. Perform the vacuum leak test and oil injection. See Vacuum Leak Test and Oil Injection.
  16. Recharge the A/C refrigerant. See A/C Refrigerant (Recovery and Recharge) (Maintenance).

    CAUTION
    Recharge the refrigerant exactly as instructed. Failure to adhere to the instructions can cause catastrophic damage to the cooling system.
  17. Perform a cooling system vacuum refill. See Cooling System - Vacuum Refill.
  18. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
  19. Access the thermal system routines on the touchscreen: Touch Quick Controls > Service Mode > Diagnostics > Thermal.
  20. Touch Thermal > Refrigerant System > Stop Thermal Fill Drain and then allow the routine to complete.
  21. Touch Thermal > Coolant System > Coolant Purge Start > Run and then allow the routine to complete.

    Make sure the vehicle is not in Drive.

    Note
    The test will last for approximately 10 minutes. Monitor and keep the superbottle topped off while the test is running.
  22. Inspect the coolant level and top off as necessary.

    Ensure that the coolant is filled to the "Max" line.
  23. Install the coolant bottle cap.
  24. Perform the heat pump commissioning through UI: Touch Thermal > Sensors and Valves > Run Heat Pump Commissioning and then touch Run.

    Touch Close once the routine is passed.
  25. Perform the thermal performance test through UI: Touch Thermal > Actions > Test Thermal Performance and then touch Run.

  26. Perform the HVAC performance test through UI: Touch Thermal > Actions > Test HVAC Performance and then touch Run.

  27. Exit Service Mode through UI. See Service Mode.
  28. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace).
  29. Lower the rack arms fully and remove them from under the vehicle.
