Suspension - Rear (Check Torque)

Procedure

Note
This procedure must be performed on both sides of the vehicle. After the torque is checked on the LH side of the rear suspension, repeat these steps on the RH side of the rear suspension.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Stands.
  2. Remove the LH and RH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  3. Check the torque for the bolts (x4) that attach the LH and RH rear damper to the body at the top mount.
    41 Nm (30.2 lbs-ft)

    Apply pressure at top of the damper to push down and clear LH and RH rear wheel arch liner.

    • 15 mm socket
    • 3 in extension
  4. Remove the rear aero shield panel. See Rear Undertray And Diffuser -Model 3/Y, Rear Aero Shield (Remove and Replace).
  5. Open the bolt covers (x2) and remove the bolts (x4) that attach the rear diffuser to the body.
    4 Nm (2.9 lbs-ft)

    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • 3 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
  6. Check the torque for the bolts (x6) that attach the rear fascia diffuser to the outer edge of the rear fascia.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 10 mm socket
    • 6 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  7. Remove the LH and RH rear suspension cover. See Rear Undertray And Diffuser - LH Rear Suspension Cover (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the bolt that attaches the LH rear brake rotor to the hub.

    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 10 mm socket
    • 2 in extension
  9. Install the hub jack adapter onto the LH rear hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts (x5).
  10. Position and raise the underhoist stand to simulate the suspension at ride height.
  11. Adjust the underhoist stand and/or spring compressor until the lower beam of the rear ride height torque tool rests against the bottom edge of the lower aft link, as illustrated.
  12. Measure the distance between the bottom of the quarter panel and the center of the rear axle to make sure that the rear suspension is set to ride height. The distance should measure 378 mm.
  13. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear upper aft link to the knuckle, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    134 Nm (98.8 lbs-ft)

  14. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear upper fore link to the knuckle, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    76 Nm (56.0 lbs-ft)

  15. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear toe link to the knuckle, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    76 Nm (56.0 lbs-ft)

  16. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear lower fore link to the knuckle, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    76 Nm (56.0 lbs-ft)

  17. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear lower aft link to the knuckle, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)

  18. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear lower aft link to the LH rear damper, and then mark the bolt and nut with a paint pen.
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)

  19. Check the torque for the nuts that attach the LH rear drop link to the LH rear stabilizer bar and the LH rear knuckle, and then mark the nuts with a paint pen.
    55 Nm (40.6 lbs-ft)

  20. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear upper fore link to the subframe, and then mark the nuts with a paint pen.

  21. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear lower fore link to the subframe, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    76 Nm (56.0 lbs-ft)

    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  22. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear toe link to the subframe, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    85 Nm (62.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless 3/8in Dr Impact
    • 18 mm deep socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 18mm 12pt combination wrench
  23. Check the torque for the nut that attach the LH rear upper aft link to the subframe, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    134 Nm (98.8 lbs-ft)

  24. Check the torque for the bolt that attach the LH rear lower aft link to the subframe, and then mark the nut with a paint pen.
    115 Nm (84.8 lbs-ft)

  25. Remove the underhoist stand from underneath the LH rear suspension.
  26. Remove the lug nuts (x5) that attach the hub jack adapter, and then remove the hub jack adapter from the vehicle.
  27. Install the bolt that attaches the LH rear brake rotor to the LH rear hub.
    5 Nm (3.7 lbs-ft)

  28. Repeat step 8 through step 27 on the RH side of the rear suspension.
  29. Check the torque for the bolts (x4) that attach the LH rear stabilizer bar to the subframe, and then mark the bolts with a paint pen.
    30 Nm (22.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 11 mm socket
    • 3 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  30. Check the torque for the bolts (x2) that attach the LH shear plate to the vehicle, and then mark the bolts with a paint pen.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • 3 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  31. Check the torque for the bolts (x2) that attach the RH rear shear plate to the vehicle, and then mark the bolts with a paint pen.
    35 Nm (25.8 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 13 mm socket
    • 3 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  32. Check the torque for the large bolt that attaches the LH shear plate to the vehicle, and then mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    130 Nm (95.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 6 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  33. Check the torque for the large bolt that attaches the RH shear plate to the vehicle, and then mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    130 Nm (95.9 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • 6 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  34. Check the torque for the bolt that attaches the RH rear of subframe to the body, and then mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    165 Nm (121.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  35. Check the torque for the bolt that attaches the LH rear of subframe to the body, and then mark the bolt with a paint pen.
    165 Nm (121.7 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 21 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
  36. Install the bolts (x6) that attach the rear fascia diffuser to the outer edge of the rear fascia.
    10 Nm (7.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 10 mm socket
    • 6 in extension
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  37. Apply Loctite 222 to the bolts (x4) and install the bolts (x4) that attach the rear diffuser to the body.
    4 Nm (2.9 lbs-ft)

  38. Install the rear aero shield panel. See Rear Undertray And Diffuser -Model 3/Y, Rear Aero Shield (Remove and Replace).
  39. Install the LH and RH rear suspension cover. See Rear Undertray And Diffuser - LH Rear Suspension Cover (Remove and Replace).
  40. Install the LH and RH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  41. Remove the vehicle from the lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Stands.
