Oil Pump - Front Drive Unit (Remove & Replace)

Remove

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a 2-post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift .
  2. Remove the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Center - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  3. Remove the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
  4. Remove the underhood storage carpet. See Carpet - Underhood Storage (Remove and Install).
  5. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace) .
  6. Remove the HEPA filter. See Filter - HEPA (Remove and Replace).
  7. Disconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
  8. Fully raise the vehicle on a 2-post lift. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift .
  9. Remove the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  10. Remove the front bash plate extrusion. See Bash Plate - Front - Extrusion (Remove and Replace) .
  11. Remove the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  12. Put an oil drain container underneath the oil pump area.
  13. Disconnect the oil pump electrical connector.
  14. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the oil pump to the front drive unit assembly.
  15. Remove the oil pump from the front drive unit assembly by prying the oil pump away from the front drive unit using a pry tool or a flat blade screwdriver.

    CAUTION
    Do not damage the front drive until casing.

    Note
    Allow the gearbox fluid to drain from the front drive unit assembly.
  16. Put a foldable funnel under the oil filter on the front subframe assembly.
  17. Release the oil filter from the front drive unit assembly by spinning the filter counterclock wise using an oil filter socket. Allow the gearbox fluid to drain, and then remove the oil filter from the front drive unit assembly.

    Note
    Tesla recommends that the oil filter is replaced with a new one upon removal. Any oil filter with visible corrosion or leaks must be replaced.
  18. Remove the foldable funnel from the vehicle.

Install

  1. Lubricate the oil seal on a new oil filter using fresh gearbox fluid.

    Note
    Tesla recommends that the oil filter is replaced with a new one upon removal. Any oil filter with visible corrosion or leaks must be replaced.
  2. Install the new oil filter on the front drive unit assembly by spinning it clockwise 3 turns, and then tighten to 3 Nm plus 135 degrees.
  3. Lubricate the seals on the oil pump, and then install the oil pump onto the front drive unit assembly.
  4. Install the bolts (x2) that attach the oil pump to the front drive unit assembly (torque 5 Nm + 20 degrees).
  5. Remove the fill plug from the front drive unit assembly.
  6. Fill the front drive unit assembly slowly with 0.9 liters of fresh gearbox fluid. See Fluids for required gearbox fluid.

    CAUTION
    Do not fill the front drive unit too quickly; otherwise the gearbox fluid will spill out before the correct amount is added.
  7. Connect the 12V power supply to the oil pump using the oil pump switchbox special tool and the XP-10 jump pack, and then run the oil pump for 15 seconds.
  8. Fill the front drive unit assembly slowly with an additional 0.9 liters of fresh gearbox fluid while continuing to run the oil pump. See Fluids for required gearbox fluid.

    Do not fill the front drive unit too quickly; otherwise the gearbox fluid will spill out before the correct amount is added.

    Note
    Make sure that a total of 1.8 liters is added to the front drive unit assembly.
  9. Disconnect the 12V power supply tool from the oil pump.
  10. Install the front drive unit assembly fill plug (torque 15 Nm).
  11. Remove the oil drain container from underneath the vehicle.
  12. Connect the oil pump electrical connector.
  13. Install the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  14. Install the front bash plate extrusion. See Bash Plate - Front - Extrusion (Remove and Replace) .
  15. Install the front aero shield panel. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace) .
  16. Fully lower the vehicle.
  17. Reconnect 12V power. See Disconnect 12V Power .
  18. Update the vehicle firmware. See Firmware Update.
  19. Install the HEPA filter. See Filter - HEPA (Remove and Replace).
  20. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace) .
  21. Install the underhood storage carpet. See Carpet - Underhood Storage (Remove and Install).
  22. Install the LH and RH underhood aprons. See Underhood Apron - LH (Remove and Replace) .
  23. Install the rear underhood apron. See Underhood Apron - Center - Rear (Remove and Replace).
  24. Touch and hold the CALIBRATE button on the Model X touchscreen until the rear doors have been fully calibrated, close completely, and the message "CALIBRATION COMPLETE" is displayed.
