Mount - Front Drive Unit - LH (Remove and Replace)

Special tools required for this procedure:

Removal

  1. Remove the 12V battery cage (refer to procedure).
  2. Remove the center cap from the front LH wheel and loosen the axle nut (torque 245 Nm).
  3. Remove the front dust shield (refer to procedure).
  4. Release the wheel speed sensor harness from the bracket on the knuckle and the bracket on the body of the vehicle.

    The following image shows the rotor still installed.
  5. Release the fir tree clip that secures the wheel speed sensor harness to the knuckle.

  6. Remove the bolt that secures the wheel speed sensor to the knuckle (torque 8 Nm).

  7. Carefully wrap the wheel speed sensor in non-conductive protective material to prevent damage. Move the wheel speed sensor out of the working area.
  8. Remove the nut that secures the tie rod end to the knuckle (torque 104 Nm).

    CAUTION
    To prevent ball joint damage, always hold the ball joint pin with a wrench while loosening or tightening the lock nut.
  9. Release the tie rod end from the knuckle.
  10. Remove the nut that secures the stabilizer bar link to the knuckle (torque 70 Nm).

    CAUTION
    To prevent ball joint damage, always hold the ball joint pin with a wrench while loosening or tightening the lock nut.
    Tip: Temporarily position a block of wood or other material on the top side of the upper control arm to prevent the upper control arm from swinging upwards in the next step.
  11. Remove the bolt and nut that secure the upper control arm ball joint to the knuckle (torque 60 Nm).

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage component(s).
  12. Release the knuckle from the upper control arm.
  13. Remove the nut and discard the washer that secure the front axle nut.

    Note
    The nut can be reused.
  14. Use a deadblow hammer to release the halfshaft from the hub.

    CAUTION
    Take care not to damage component(s).
  15. Remove the HV battery (refer to procedure).
  16. Drain the fluid from the front drive unit (refer to procedure).
  17. Remove the bolt that secures the lower intermediate shaft to the steering rack (torque 30 Nm).
  18. Remove the bolt that secures the bottom of the spring module to the lower control arm (torque 140 Nm).
  19. Use the axle extractor tool to release the LH halfshaft from the front drive unit.
  20. Remove the LH halfshaft from the vehicle.
  21. Install the drive unit cradle onto the transmission jack.
  22. Position the transmission jack underneath the drive unit.
  23. Raise the transmission jack to support the weight of the drive unit.

    Ensure that the ridge on the base of the drive unit fits into the channel on the drive unit cradle.

    Note
    The mount is removed as two separate pieces.
  24. Remove the bolts that attach the clevis to the LH motor mount (torque 50 Nm).
  25. Remove the bolts that attach the LH motor mount to the front drive unit (torque 38 Nm).
  26. Remove the fasteners that secure the isolator section of the mount to the drive unit (torque 38 Nm).

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal.
