Applique - Roof - Rear (Remove and Replace)

CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

Removal

  1. Open the liftgate and both rear doors.
  2. Apply protective tape on the areas surrounding the rear roof applique to prevent damage.
  3. Release the front and rear seals from the rear roof applique.

    The rear roof applique is secured to the body by sealant, metal clips (x3), and plastic clips (x2).
  4. Starting from one corner of the rear roof applique, use a cutting blade to cut through the sealant until the applique is loose. Carefully lift the applique and remove it from the vehicle.

    CAUTION
    Do not damage glass or the harnesses near the liftgate.
    Tip: It might be easier to remove the applique while the liftgate is closed.
  5. Use the adhesive scraper to remove the excess adhesive from the liftgate.
  6. Use a vacuum to remove any loose remaining material.
  7. Remove the protective tape from the body of the vehicle.
  8. Clean the remaining adhesive on the liftgate with alcohol wipes. Allow the alcohol to dry for at least 1 minute.

Installation

  1. Inspect the vehicle for butyl patches covering the 5 locations shown. If any of the locations are missing a butyl patch, install a 40x40 mm butyl patch over the hole.

    The butyl patches protect the vehicle from water ingress.
  2. Ensure that the new rear roof applique comes with front and rear seals already installed. If the new rear roof applique does not come with front and rear seals already installed, transfer the seals from the old rear roof applique.
  3. Apply primer to the applique, as directed by the adhesive manufacturer.

    Check the primer and adhesive packaging for the appropriate working times for each product. Prepare the necessary tools and work environment so that the the applique can be installed within the specified working times.

    Check the primer packaging for the appropriate wait time before applying adhesive.
  4. Apply sealant on the new rear roof applique. Use the path directed in the following image, starting at the dots and following the arrows.
  5. Remove the backing from the double sided tape.
  6. Working from one end to the other, install the rear roof applique, making sure that the gaps are even front to back and side to side. Apply firm and even pressure along the entirety of the rear roof applique.

    Ensure that all clips are properly seated.
    Tip: Tape can be used to apply constant pressure to the rear roof applique.
  7. Clean off any excess adhesive that was extruded.
  8. Close the rear doors and liftgate.
  9. Check the gap and flush measurements to ensure it is within specification.
  10. Allow the adhesive to dry, as directed by the adhesive manufacturer.

    Do not drive the vehicle until the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended minimum drive-away time has passed. Dow Betaseal Express has a drive-away time of 1 hour minimum in temperatures of 0˚F (-18˚C) or warmer. If necessary, leave the tape applying pressure to the glass on the vehicle and advise the customer that they can remove it after 24 hours. Additionally, advise the customer that they should avoid high driving speeds and speed bumps for the next 24 hours.
