Applique - Spine - Center (Remove and Replace)

Note
The spine applique contains an ultrasonic sensor (USS). If diagnosis confirms that
there is a failure with the ultrasonic sensor, replace the spine applique.
CAUTION
For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.
Removal
- Open the LH front door, the LH rear door, and the liftgate.

Release the clips (x4) that attach the upper portion of the LH lower C-pillar
trim to the vehicle.
- Remove the LH side rear trunk garnish. See Garnish - Rear Trunk - Side - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH mid C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Mid - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH upper C-pillar trim. See Trim - C-Pillar - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).

Vehicles built before June
2016: Carefully release the clips (x19) that attach the LH rear portion of
the headliner to the vehicle.
- Remove the lower rear LH door trim garnish. See Garnish - Door Trim - LH - Rear - Lower (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH upper rear door trim panel. See Panel - Door Trim - Rear - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH rear upper rear door trim bracket. See Bracket - Rear Door Trim - Upper - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH front upper rear door trim bracket. See Bracket - Rear Door Trim - Upper - Front - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH center rear door trim bracket. See Bracket - Rear Door Trim - Center - LH (Remove and Replace).

Release the clips (x4) that attach the LH upper gap hider trim to the
door.
- Remove the LH upper rear door glass. See Door Glass - Rear - Upper - LH (Remove and Replace).

Place suitable protective covers
on the 2nd row seats, and then close the LH rear door from inside the
vehicle.
NoteWhile performing the rest of this procedure, stand on the 2nd row seats and work through the upper glass window opening.

Release the center spine applique from the vehicle:
NoteRelease the center spine applique, but do not remove the applique from the vehicle at this time.

Remove the seal in front of the center applique.
NoteThe remainder of this procedure requires an assistant.

Starting at the front of the vehicle, use a cutting wire to cut the sealant
underneath the perimeter of the center applique as much as possible.
NoteThe applique has clips that prevent using the wire to cut all of the sealant.

Starting at the front of the vehicle, use a cutting blade to cut through the
remainder of the sealant.
Tip: Use glass cleaner or a similar lubricant to aid in cutting.Tip: While cutting, have an assistant pull up on the applique.
- Disconnect the ultrasonic sensor from the center spine applique, and then remove the applique from the vehicle.
Installation
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:
- Remove all excess sealant.
- Reconnect the ultrasonic sensor
- Install the weatherstrip on the center applique.
- Apply primer to the perimeter of
the applique, as directed by the adhesive manufacturer.WarningCheck the expiration date of the primer and adhesive before use.NoteCheck the primer and adhesive packaging for the appropriate working times for each product. Prepare the necessary tools and work environment so that the applique can be installed within the specified working times.NoteCheck the primer packaging for the appropriate wait time before applying adhesive.
- Urethane tip opening must be 8mm wide and 14mm tall.
- Apply urethane to the center spine applique following the primer patch.
- Run the ultrasonic sensor test:
- Connect a laptop to the diagnostic port of the vehicle, and then use Toolbox 3 to locally connect to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
- Unlock the vehicle gateway for diagnostic communication. See Gateway Unlock.
- Carefully position an object 25 cm–35 cm above the center spine applique ultrasonic sensor.
- In Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "DRV_USS_ROOF" into the search field, click TEST-SELF_BCFALCD_DRV_USS-ROOF-WITH-OBSTACLEvia Toolbox: (link), click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
- Attempt to open and close the rear doors. If the doors do not open, take the vehicle on a quick drive around the shop premises, and then check rear door functionality again.
