Trailer Hitch (Remove and Replace)

  • 2025-11-28: Added instructions for modifying 2021+ Model Y trailer hitch.

Removal

  1. Remove the rear fascia. See Fascia Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
  2. Disconnect the trailer harness electrical connector.
  3. Remove the nuts (x8) that secure the trailer hitch to the studs on the body (torque 65 Nm).
  4. Remove the trailer hitch from the vehicle.

Installation

If the trailer hitch for 2016-2020 Model X is available: Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following: Use cable ties to secure the vehicle side of the trailer harness to the tow hitch. Remove excess tie.

If the trailer hitch for 2016-2020 Model X is no longer available, follow these steps to modify and install a 2021+ Model X trailer hitch:

  1. Remove the nut that attaches the trailer hitch ECU to the trailer hitch assembly, and then remove the ECU.
  2. Remove the screws (x3) that attach the trailer hitch socket to the new trailer hitch assembly.
  3. Remove the clips (x2) that attach the trailer hitch jumper harness to the new trailer hitch assembly, and then remove the trailer hitch jumper harness.
  4. Remove the cover from the old trailer hitch jumper harness.
  5. Route the jumper harness through the mounting bracket on the new trailer hitch assembly.
  6. Install the cover onto the trailer hitch jumper harness.

    Ensure that the grommet is seated properly.
  7. Install the screws (x3) that attach the trailer hitch jumper harness to the trailer hitch assembly (torque 3 Nm).
  8. Fasten the clip that attaches the trailer hitch jumper harness to the trailer hitch assembly.
  9. Install the trailer hitch onto the studs, and then tighten the nuts (x8) that attach the trailer hitch to the vehicle (torque 65 Nm).
  10. Install the rear fascia. See Fascia Assembly - Rear (Remove and Install).
