Brake Caliper - Rear - Mando - LH (Remove and Replace)

Removal

  1. Connect a laptop to the diagnostic port of the vehicle, and then use Toolbox 3 to locally connect to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  2. Unlock the vehicle gateway for diagnostic communication. See Gateway Unlock.
  3. In Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "Pressure-Burnished" into the search field, click TEST_BRAKE_X_STIFFNESS-TEST-PRESSURE-BURNISHEDvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Stiffness Test, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  4. Remove the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace) .
  5. Gently release the HEPA filter from the duct, and then remove the filter from the vehicle.
  6. Place the vehicle into "Jack Mode".
  7. Remove the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install) .
  8. Using Toolbox 3:
    1. Select the Actions tab and search for "EPB Service Mode".
    2. For Intel based MCUs, select the ODIN routine PROC_EPB_X_SERVICE-MODEvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode:
      • Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ EPB Service Mode
      • Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ EPB Service Mode
      • Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ EPB Service Mode
      via Service Mode Plus: Drive Unit ➜ Rear Drive Unit Replacement ➜ Release / Re-Engage Emergency Parking Brake
      , and then click the link of the routine.
    3. For Tegra based MCUs, select the ODIN routine PROC_EPB_X_SERVICE-MODE-STARTvia Toolbox: (link), and then click the link of the routine.
    4. Click RUN, and allow the routine to complete.

      CAUTION
      The vehicle may roll freely.
  9. Disconnect the electrical harness from the LH rear brake caliper motor connector.
  10. Remove the bolt that attaches the brake hose to the caliper (torque 42 Nm), and then release the hose from the caliper.

    Plug pipe connections to prevent ingress of moisture or dirt.

    Note
    Place suitable absorbent material around the affected area to absorb any possible fluid spillage.

    If brake fluid is spilled on a painted surface, wash off immediately with clean water.
  11. Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the LH rear brake caliper to the LH rear knuckle, and then remove the caliper from the vehicle.

Installation

  1. If installed, remove the brake pads from the caliper.
  2. Use needle-nose pliers to ensure that the slots in the rear brake caliper piston face are at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.
  3. Install the brake pads into the caliper.
  4. Install the LH rear brake caliper onto the LH rear knuckle, and then install the bolts (x2) that attach the brake caliper to the knuckle (torque 120 Nm).
  5. Position the flexible brake hose onto the caliper, and then install the bolt and new washers (x2) that attach the brake hose to the caliper.
    42 Nm (31.0 lbs-ft)
  6. Connect the electrical harness to the LH rear brake caliper motor connector.
  7. Perform the bleed procedure on the LH rear brake caliper. See Bleed Procedure - One Caliper (Remove and Replace) .
  8. Install the LH rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install) .
  9. Install the HEPA filter into the vehicle, and gently fasten the filter to the duct.
  10. Install the underhood storage unit. See Underhood Storage Unit (Remove and Replace) .
  11. Pump the brake pedal until firm.
  12. Take the vehicle out of "Jack Mode".
  13. Unlock the vehicle gateway for diagnostic communication, if not already unlocked. See Gateway Unlock.
  14. In Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "Pressure-Burnished" into the search field, click TEST_BRAKE_X_STIFFNESS-TEST-PRESSURE-BURNISHEDvia Toolbox: (link)via Service Mode: Chassis ➜ Brakes ➜ Brake Stiffness Test, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
  15. Compare the results of the brake stiffness tests.

    Note
    If the brake is less stiff after replacing the caliper, perform the bleed procedure a second time. See Bleed Procedure - One Caliper (Remove and Replace) .
  16. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  17. Burnish the brake pads. See Brake Pads - Burnishing.
