Intermediate Shaft - Steering Column - Lower (Remove and Replace)

Correction Code 32011602

  • 2023-09-19: Replace the steps of removing HEPA filter, wiper motor and reservoir with releasing the wheel arch liner and turning the steering wheel to improve the efficiency.

Removal

  1. Open the LH front door and lower the LH front window.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. See Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  3. Remove the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  4. Remove the push clips (x4) and a nut on the back half of the LH front wheel arch liner.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Clip pry tool
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
  5. Remove and discard the bolt that attaches the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft.

    Note
    Adjust the bolts to a convenient position for disassembly before disassembly. Vehicles built before October 18, 2016 equipped with 15 mm nuts.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm deep socket
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 11 in extension Locking
  6. Install the steering wheel holder on the steering wheel.

    Note
    The steering wheel holder prevents damage to the clock spring during the removal of the lower intermediate steering column shaft.
  7. Remove the front aero shield. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  8. Remove the front bash plate extrusion. See Bash Plate - Front - Extrusion (Remove and Replace).
  9. Remove and discard the bolts (x4) that attach the HV battery to the front subframe.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 13 mm deep socket
  10. Remove the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  11. Remove the bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack.
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 13 mm socket
  12. Slide the lower portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft up and off the steering rack input shaft.
  13. Slide down the upper portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft to separate it from the upper intermediate shaft, and then remove the lower steering column intermediate shaft from the vehicle.

Installation

  1. Using a paintbrush, apply Krytox lubricant on all of the intermediate shaft u-joint seals and crevices.
  2. Position the lower steering column intermediate shaft for installation on the vehicle.
  3. Slide the upper portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft up and onto the upper steering column intermediate shaft.
  4. Slide the lower portion of the lower steering column intermediate shaft down and onto the steering rack input shaft.
  5. Install the bolt that attaches the lower steering column intermediate shaft to the steering rack.
    30 Nm (22.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • 13 mm socket
  6. Install the front skidplate. See Skidplate - Front (Remove and Replace).
  7. Install the new bolts (x4) that attach the HV battery to the front subframe.
    30 Nm (22.1 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 13 mm deep socket
  8. Install the front bash plate extrusion. See Bash Plate - Front - Extrusion (Remove and Replace).
  9. Install the front aero shield. See Panel - Aero Shield - Front (Remove and Replace).
  10. Install a new bolt that attaches the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft.
    50 Nm (36.9 lbs-ft)

    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • 16 mm deep socket
    • Flex head ratchet/flex head torque wrench
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 11 in extension Locking
  11. Install the push clips (x4) and a nut on the back half of the LH front wheel arch liner.
    6 Nm (4.4 lbs-ft)
    Tip: Use of the following tool(s) is recommended:
    • Cordless Ratchet/Impact Driver
    • 4 in extension
    • 10 mm socket
    • Ratchet/torque wrench
  12. Install the LH front wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
  13. Remove the steering wheel holder from the vehicle.
  14. Perform a lock-to-lock angle test. See Lock To Lock-Angle Test.
  15. Disable Service Mode. See Service Mode.
  16. Remove the vehicle from the lift.
  17. Raise the LH front window and close the LH front door.
