Windshield (Vehicles with 2nd Generation or Later Autopilot Hardware) (Remove and Install)

2024-04-11: Added a step of cleaning the windshield, especially the forward-facing camera area, to ensure a clear view of the forward-facing camera.

CAUTION

For Europe only: Only technicians who have been trained in working with diisocyanates and have completed all required certification courses are permitted to perform procedures using urethane and other products containing diisocyanates. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when working with products containing diisocyanates.

Remove

Open hood

Remove rear underhood apron

11x clips, If the vehicle does not have a Schrader fill valve, install it now. See Fill Valve - Air (Retrofit). Then continue to the next step. If the vehicle has a Schrader fill valve, continue to the next step.

Release front of headliner from body

Apply tape onto leading edge of headliner

Place rolled up towels between front headliner and body to create space

Remove rear view mirror lower cover

Disconnect rear view mirror connector

Disconnect humidity sensor and heating element connectors

Remove windshield harness from windshield bracket

Use plastic trim tool to release harness from windshield bracket
Remove triple camera glare shield

Apply tape onto exterior A-pillars

Prevents damage from cutting tool
Cut length of square wire
Secure wire to starter tool and push tool through urethane at lower RH side
Remove wire from starter tool and secure to T-handles
Pull wire starter tool back through into vehicle
Use T-handles to cut urethane securing windshield to body

Recommend assistance, Use caution around two small datums at top of windshield, Use protective material to prevent damage to the speaker grill, heated wiper grid area, and VIN plate, Maintain downward angle near RH side of front edge to avoid contacting heater grid solder points
Cut square wire and remove from vehicle and T-handles
Secure suction cups onto windshield

Inspect windshield for any damage that is not reworkable

Replace windshield if there is any damage that can not be rectified. Damages include: cracked glass, damaged heater grids, damaged/separating triple camera mount
Clean and remove old adhesive from the windshield frame
Remove tape from exterior A-pillars and headliner

Inspect paint and headliner for damage, Apply touch-up paint as needed

Windshield Preparation

Remove urethane bead and windshield seals from glass
Remove damaged datums

2x datums, inside of upper corners
Clean double sided tape residue

if needed, an eraser wheel can be used.
Clean all mating surfaces with isopropyl alcohol
Check continuity of wiper heater grid

All resistances @23degC. Tolerance +/-15%,HWA (single circuit pre-03/2016): 1.45ohmsHWA (dual circuit post-03/2016): R1HWA: 1.52ohmsR2HWA: 1.54ohms
Check continuity of Heated camera area

Install windshield lower lip seal

Follow windshield alignment marks at lower corners of glass
Install windshield edge seal

Follow windshield alignment marks at upper corners of glass. Start from one corner and peel tape as you apply inch by inch to ensure proper fitment.
Install LH side datum
Install RH side datum
Tape wiper heater area connectors to glass
Install suction cups

Note
x2 on each side
Position windshield onto vehicle for dry-fit
Visually inspect the lip and edge seal
Remove glass from vehicle
Perform any adjustments for new windshield

Add net pads if necessary; No time recorded as it was not necessary during validation

Install

Clean the windshield as needed. Take special caution to the forward-facing camera area to ensure a clear view of the forward-facing camera. See Clear Forward Camera View (Precision Cleaning Of Inboard Windshield).
Clean primer path on windshield

Note
Ensure inside of glass is clean and smudge free near VIN plate as it won't be accessible once installed
Apply urethane primer to windshield and vehicle body along old urethane path

Note
Make sure to add primer over any areas that were scratched during windshield removal. Allow primer to dry before applying urethane.
Prepare caulking gun and urethane

Note
Opening must be 8mm wide and 14mm tall
Apply urethane following primer path on windshield

Note
Ensure urethane breaks overlap 1 inch, Use IPA wipes to merge urethane breaks
Install windshield onto vehicle

Note
Recommend assistance, Align glass and apply pressure to all four corners
Check gap and flushness between windshield and body and front roof applique
