Oil Pump - 3DU Small Rear Drive Unit (Remove and Replace)

  • 2024-02-28: Updated gearbox fluid.

Removal

  1. Activate Jack mode, see Jack Mode Activation.
  2. Open the LH front door.
  3. Lower the LH front window.
  4. On the touchscreen, touch Controls > Software and make sure the installed firmware version is 2019.40.50 or later. If necessary, update the firmware, see Firmware Update.
  5. Disconnect 12V powery, see Disconnect 12V Power.
  6. Raise the vehicle to a comfortable working height, see Raise Vehicle - 2 Post Lift.
  7. Remove the subframe shear plates by removing the nyloc nut (torque 35 Nm), clips (x2), and screws (x3) (torque 6 Nm) that secure each shear plate to the subframe.

    Note
    Discard the nyloc nut after removal.
  8. Remove the mid aero shield, see Panel - Aero Shield - Mid (Remove and Replace).
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector of the rear drive unit oil pump.
  10. Position an oil drain container under the rear drive unit drain plug.
  11. Remove the rear drive unit fill plug (torque 28 Nm), and then remove the rear drive unit drain plug (28 Nm) to drain the fluid into the oil drain container.
  12. Install a flexible funnel to prevent fluid from spilling, and then remove the oil filter.

    Note
    Tesla recommends that the oil filter is replaced with a new one upon removal. Any oil filter with visible corrosion or leaks must be replaced.
  13. Remove the bolts (x2) (torque 5 Nm + 20 degrees) that attach the oil pump to the oil pump housing.
  14. Remove the oil pump.

    Note
    Carefully insert a plastic wedge between the oil pump and the lower housing bracket and work the wedge between the lower housing bracket and the oil pump until the O-ring is visible. Then remove the oil pump by towards the front of the vehicle. Allow residual oil to drain.
  15. Inspect O-rings on removed parts: three O-rings on oil pump, one on each drain and fill plug and one on the oil filter.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:
  1. Lubricate all O-rings on the new oil pump with new gearbox fluid before installing the pump. See Fluids for required gearbox fluid.
  2. Install a new oil filter; lubricate the O-ring on the filter with new gearbox fluid before installing the filter. See Fluids for required gearbox fluid.

    Note
    Tesla recommends that the oil filter is replaced with a new one upon removal. Any oil filter with visible corrosion or leaks must be replaced.
  3. Inspect O-rings on the fill and drain plugs for any damage. Replace if damage is found.
  4. After installation of the drain plug, fill the rear drive unit with 2.4 qts (2400 ml) of new gearbox fluid. See Fluids for required gearbox fluid.
  5. After connecting 12V:
    1. Connect a 12V charger to the battery.
    2. Redeploy the vehicle firmware using Toolbox 3, see Firmware Reinstall - Toolbox.
    3. Disconnect the 12V charger from the battery.
  6. Deactivate Jack mode, see Jack Mode Activation.
