Seat Belt Assembly - 2nd Row - LH (Without 2nd Row Bench Seats) (Remove and Replace)

Note
In the event of an airbag or seat belt tensioner deployment, certain airbag and seat belt components must be replaced, and other components must be inspected for damage. Refer to SRS Inspection and Component Replacement for a specific list of items that must be inspected and replaced.

Special tools required for this procedure:

Removal

  1. Remove the 2nd row seat assembly (refer to procedure) and place it on the padded surface.
  2. Remove the back cover from the seat(refer to procedure).
  3. Release the fasteners that secure the seat back cushion to the seat frame.
  4. If equipped, disconnect the seat heater harness electrical connector. Route the harness through the seat back to move it out of the working area.

    Note
    If the harness is secured to the seat belt retractor with a cable tie, remove the cable tie.
  5. Gently separate the seat back cushion from the seat frame.
  6. Release the fasteners that secure the seat belt upper bezel to the seat back cushion. Remove the bezel from the seat.
  7. Return the seat back cushion to its original position.
  8. Use a pick to release the plastic covers that conceal the screws on the bottom of the seat.
  9. Remove the screws that secure the plastic trim to the bottom of the seat frame.
  10. Use a trim tool to release the clips that secure the lower trim panel to the bottom of the seat frame.

    Note
    On some vehicles, the panel remains as a captive part of the seat and cannot be removed.
  11. Starting at the outer rear corner, peel the lower cushion trim (upholstery) away from the bottom of the seat frame. This allows the lower cushion trim and foam to be lifted in the next step.
  12. Lift up the seat bottom cushion so that it touches the backrest
  13. Remove and discard the bolt and nut that secure the seat belt anchor to the seat frame (torque 45 Nm).

    Note
    If a washer is installed on this joint, note how it is installed, and then set it aside for reuse.
  14. Release the 4 tabs that secure the lower seat belt bezel to the seat bottom cushion.

  15. Remove the lower seat belt bezel from the seat belt.
  16. Remove the lower fasteners that secure the headrest bracket.
  17. Pull back the headrest upholstery, then remove the upper fasteners that secure the headrest bracket. Remove the headrest bracket from the vehicle.
  18. Remove the 6 fasteners that secure the seat back, but do not remove the seat back.

    Note
    This allows the seat back to flex enough to allow the bolt that secures the seat belt retractor to be removed in a later step.

  19. Pull the seat belt out through the rear of the seat back.
  20. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the seat belt retractor.

    Note
    If the harness is secured to the seat belt retractor with a cable tie, remove the cable tie.
  21. Use a hot-blade knife to remove a section of the seat back as shown.
  22. Loosen the bolt that secures the seat belt retractor to the seat frame (torque 45 Nm).

    Note
    It is only necessary to release the seat belt retractor from the seat frame; the fastener is secured to the retractor with a locking washer and can not be removed.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

  • Apply tape to the seat belt webbing before installing it.

  • Use a new nut and bolt when securing the seat belt anchor to the seat frame. If a washer was installed on the previous seat belt anchor, reuse the washer. Install the fasteners in the order shown.
  • Install a new cable tie to secure the seat heater harness to the seat belt retractor.

  • Install a new cable tie to secure the seat belt retractor harness to the seat belt retractor.

  • If the component was replaced due to an internal failure:
    1. Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle.
    2. Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
    3. In Toolbox 3, click Dashboards > Service Tools > DTCs, and then select SDM or RCM depending on the vehicle Restraint Control Type.
    4. Click Read DTCs to display the DTCs.
    5. Power cycle the vehicle.
    6. Click Clear DTCs to clear the DTCs.
    7. Disconnect Toolbox and remove the laptop from the vehicle.
