Liftgate Assembly (Remove and Replace)

Removal
- Remove the antenna amplifier. See Antenna Amplifier - AM/FM and RKE (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the liftgate speaker trim. See Grille - Speaker - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the bolts (x8) from the speaker shelf bracket (torque 2.5 Nm).
- Disconnect the electrical connector of the liftgate chime.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors of the liftgate speakers.
- Remove the speaker shelf bracket.
- Remove the liftgate glass. See Liftgate Glass (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the active spoiler motor (if equipped). See Motor - Active Spoiler (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the cinching actuator and cable. See Actuator and Cable - Cinching (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH and RH spoiler drains.
- Remove the liftgate applique. See Applique - Liftgate (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the LH and RH fog/reverse rear lights. See Light - Fog/Reverse - Rear - LH (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the rear view camera. See Camera - Rear View (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the rear license plate.
- Remove the LH and RH license plate lights. See Light - License Plate (Remove and Replace).
- Remove the screws that secure the liftgate exterior switch to the liftgate.
- Remove the LH and RH liftgate pinch sensors.

Remove the front liftgate pinch sensor.
NoteThe front pinch sensor is mounted using double sided tape.
- Remove the LH and RH liftgate stops.
- Remove the LH and RH overslam bumpers.
- Remove the screws that secure the emergency release to the liftgate.
- Remove the bolts that secure the liftgate harness to the liftgate.

Release the grommet from the liftgate frame, and then pull the liftgate harness
through the hole in the frame.
CAUTIONMake sure not to scratch wire insulation.

Mark the location of the bolts that
attach the liftgate to the hinges.
NoteThis aids in reinstallation of the liftgate.
- Loosen the bolts that secure the liftgate to the hinges, but do not fully remove them.

Use a telescoping bar to support
the liftgate in the open position.
Tip: Position the support bar against the bracket for better support.

Remove the struts from the
liftgate, and then lower the struts onto the rear of the vehicle.
CAUTIONTo prevent damage, put a shop towel between the struts and the vehicle.

Remove the bolts that secure the
liftgate to the hinges (torque 38 Nm).
WarningThe next step requires at least 2 assistants.
- Remove the liftgate from the vehicle, and then place it on a padded surface
Installation
CAUTION
If using this procedure to
install an unpainted part, make sure to apply seam sealer to all seams prior to
installing and painting the part. Refer to the Collision Repair manual for more
information.
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:
- Remove the location marks from the hinges.
- Adjust the liftgate for proper gap and flushness.
- For China, Japan and Korea only: Install a new motor ID label on the trunk.
- Install a new Tesla "T" and lettering. See Rear Lettering (Remove and Replace).
- If the vehicle is equipped with
an Active Spoiler, calibrate the rear spoiler:
- Connect a laptop with Toolbox 3 to the vehicle.
- Unlock the vehicle gateway. See Gateway Unlock.
- In Toolbox 3, click the Actions tab, type "X_Spoiler" into the search field, click PROC_BCREAR_X_SPOILERSearch for routine in ToolboxRun BCREAR Spoiler Routine, click Run, and allow the routine to complete.
- Disconnect Toolbox and remove the laptop from the vehicle.
