Media Control Unit (Remove and Install)
Correction Code 21060101
Special tool required for this procedure:
Supplier | Part Number | Description |
Tesla | 1065660-00-A | ESD FOAM CONTAINER FOR MEDIA CONTROL UNIT |
Note
This procedure removes and then installs the same media control unit. To replace a
media control unit, refer to SI-20-21-005 for Atom, and SI-20-21-014 for Tegra.
Removal
Warning
If the 12V power supply is disconnected, do not attempt to open the front doors with door glass in closed position. Failure to follow this instruction could result in door glass shatter.
Note
Before disconnecting the 12V power supply, make sure that the driver’s door window is fully open. Failure to follow this instruction could result in vehicle lockout.
- Open both front doors and windows.
- Move the steering wheel fully downwards and away from the instrument panel.
- Open the glove box.
- Disconnect 12V power (refer to procedure).
- Remove the RH instrument panel finisher (refer to procedure).
- Remove the LH inner instrument panel finisher (refer to procedure).
-
Put on an ESD wrist strap and connect it to chassis ground.
CAUTIONFailure to ground to the chassis of the vehicle can result in damage to the connectivity board.
- If equipped, remove the ground strap from the top of the MCU.
-
Remove the screws (x4) that secure the MCU to the IP carrier (torque 7 Nm).
CAUTIONTo avoid damage to the circuit board, fully depress the connector release tab before pulling on a connector. Check all connectors on the MCU to make sure they are still securely attached to board. If the connector bodies can be twisted, the MCU must be replaced.
-
Gently tilt the top of the MCU, then disconnect the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi harness connectors.
CAUTIONTo prevent damage, make sure there is sufficient slack in the USB1 and USB2 wires. Excessive tension on these wires could damage the connector bodies on the MCU.
-
Disconnect the USB1 and USB2 harness connectors.
-
Disconnect the remaining harness connectors.
CAUTIONTo prevent damage, make sure that the cables are aligned correctly with no excessive twists or bends.
- Remove the ESD wrist strap.
-
Remove the MCU from the vehicle. Gently place the MCU on the foam ESD container with the touchscreen facing down.
CAUTIONTake care not to damage component(s).
Installation
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:
CAUTION
Identify an MCU with LTE modem. Look for ALS3-E or ALS3-US in cell_model, this can be read without removing the MCU.
CAUTION
Do not install used MCUs that have not been remanufactured for diagnostic purposes. Installing a used, non-remanufactured MCU might result in corrupted odometer readings.
CAUTION
Put on an ESD wrist strap and connect it to chassis ground before connecting the electrical connectors to the rear of the MCU. Do not remove the ESD wrist strap until the screws (x4) that secure the MCU to the IP carrier have been installed.
- Reinstalling the top pad requires two technicians: One technician presses down on the LH side of the top pad to secure the LH clips while the other technician presses down on the RH side to secure the RH clips. Work from the outer edges of the top pad inward and secure all clips.
