Halfshaft - Front Drive Unit - RH (1st Generation) (Remove and Replace)

Remove

  1. Open LH front door
  2. Raise and support vehicle.

    Put the air suspension into "Jack Mode" from the MCU via Controls > Service > Jack Mode.
  3. Remove the RH front wheel ornament center cap.
  4. Loosen RH front axle nut.

    1x nut, 32mm, 245 Nm
  5. Remove RH front lug nut covers.
  6. Loosen the RH front lug nuts.
  7. Raise the vehicle partially and lower onto locks.
  8. Remove the RH front wheel with a battery powered drill.
  9. Remove the bolts that attach the RH front brake caliper to the knuckle.
  10. Remove the RH front brake caliper from the knuckle and hang it aside.
  11. Remove the axle nut and discard the washer that attach the RH drive axle to hub assembly.

    The nut can be reused.
  12. Setup hub puller onto the RH hub assembly.

    2x lug nuts, 2x hub puller washers
  13. With assistance, use the hub puller to free the RH halfshaft from hub splines.

    Warning
    To reduce the risk of personal injury, wear cut resistant gloves and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) as required when removing the halfshaft.
  14. Remove the hub puller from RH hub assembly.
  15. Release the grommets (x2) and clip that attaches the RH wheel speed sensor harness to the RH front knuckle.
  16. Remove the nut that attaches the RH knuckle to upper control arm ball joint.

    1x nut, 15mm, 1x bolt, T50, 60 Nm, Hold the bolt in place to prevent turning while removing the nut, Discard nut after removal.
  17. Disconnect the RH knuckle from the upper control arm.

    1x bolt, T50, While holding the upper control arm to the ball joint, slide the bolt out of the top of the knuckle. This will release the knuckle from the upper control arm ball joint. Support the knuckle as the ball joint is released.
  18. Remove the bolt and nut that attach the RH front shock absorber to the rear lower control arm.

    1x nut, 21mm, 1x bolt, 21mm, 140 Nm
  19. Remove the RH tie rod nut and move the tie rod end away.

    1x Nyloc nut, 21mm, 103 Nm, Discard after removal.
  20. Remove the RH stabilizer bar nut from the stabilizer bar and move the RH stabilizer bar end link away from the bar.

    1x Nyloc nut, 15mm, 70 Nm, Discard after removal
  21. Remove the RH halfshaft from RH hub assembly.
  22. Release the RH halfshaft from the jackshaft and remove it from the vehicle.

    1x U-bolt, 2x nuts, 10mm, Torque hand-tight, Wrap cable around inner joint, then tighten with U-bolt, Use slide hammer with cable eyelets to release, To avoid damage to the halfshaft boots, exercise caution when removing

Install

  1. Install the RH axle to the jackshaft.

    Carefully push the halfshaft into the drive unit until there is an audible "click" from the halfshaft stub contacting the pinion shaft. There will be a slight pulling sensation on the halfshaft as the halfshaft circlip locks into place. Pull on the inner halfshaft cup to confirm that the circlip is locked into place. If the halfshaft detaches from the drive unit, then reinstall the halfshaft and then test that it is fully seated.
  2. Apply Molykote M-77 to the outboard side of RH axle shaft.

    Clean if necessary. Apply no more than 1 gram to the axle only.
  3. Install the RH halfshaft into hub and bearing assembly with new lock washer and nut hand tight.

    1x nut, 1x washer, 32mm, 245 Nm. Use a new washer. The nut can be reused. Do not torque at this time.
  4. Loosely install the bolt and nut that attach the RH front shock absorber to the rear lower control arm.

    1x nut, 21mm, 1x bolt, 21mm, 140 Nm, Install new fasteners. Torque at a later step.
  5. Secure RH front knuckle to upper control arm.

    1x bolt, T50, 1x patch nut, 15mm, 60 Nm. Install new fastener
  6. Install a new nut that attaches the RH stabilizer bar to the stabilizer bar end links.

    1x nyloc nut, 15mm, 70 Nm, Install new nut.
  7. Install the nut that attaches the RH tie rod end to the knuckle.

    1x nyloc nut, 21mm, 103 Nm. Install a new nut.
  8. Install the RH speed sensor harness grommets (x2) and clip to the RH knuckle.
  9. Remove the RH front brake caliper from the S-hook.
  10. Position the RH front brake caliper onto the RH front knuckle and install the fasteners.

    2x bolts, 18mm, 120 Nm
  11. Install RH front wheel with battery powered drill.
  12. Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the floor.
  13. Torque the RH front wheel.

    5x nuts, 21mm, 175 Nm.
  14. Install the RH front lug nut covers.
  15. Torque the RH front axle nut.

    1x nut, 32mm, 245 Nm.
  16. Install the RH front wheel center cap.

    Note
    Make sure that the emblem is aligned with valve stem.
  17. Remove the vehicle from the lift.

    Note
    Lower rack arms fully and move them from under vehicle. Disable "Jack Mode".
  18. Position the the vehicle on a 4-post lift.
  19. Enable "Jack Mode" from the MCU.
  20. Torque the bolt that attaches the LH front air spring module to the LH front lower control arm (torque 140 Nm).
  21. Remove the vehicle from the 4-post lift.
