Shaft - Steering Column - Intermediate Upper (RHD) (Remove and Replace)

Removal

  1. Lower the RH front window.
  2. Move RH seat fully backward.
  3. Install a steering wheel holder.

    The steering wheel position can be adjusted throughout this procedure to access components. Keep the steering wheel holder installed.
  4. Remove the RH front wheel (refer to procedure).
  5. Remove the nut (torque 6 Nm) and clips (x5) that attach the rear part of the RH front arch liner, and then move away the rear part of the arch liner for access.
  6. Working from the RH wheelwell, disconnect the power train coolant pump connector, and then remove the coolant pump from the bracket using a pry tool.
  7. Remove the bolt (torque 50 Nm) that attaches the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft.
  8. Separate the upper intermediate shaft from the lower intermediate shaft.
  9. Lower the vehicle (refer to procedure).
  10. Remove the RH floor mat.
  11. Release the clips (x13) that attach the RH center console trim panel to the center console.
  12. Release the clips (x6) that attach the RH center console close out panel to the center console, and then remove the panel.
  13. Release the clips (x2) that secure the RH footwel cover, disconnect the puddle lamp connector, and then remove the RH footwell cover.
  14. Rotate the steering wheel to gain access to the bolt that secures the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column. Remove the bolt (torque 30 Nm).

    Do not allow the steering wheel to over-rotate 360 degrees

    Take note to remember the original position where the upper and lower shaft were separated.
    Separate the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column, and then remove the shaft with the steering seal as an assembly.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:
  1. Transfer the steering dash seal onto the new upper intermediate shaft.
  2. Connect a laptop to the diagnostic port of the vehicle, and then use Toolbox 3 to locally connect to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
  3. Unlock the vehicle gateway for diagnostic communication. See Gateway Unlock.
  4. Calibrate the steering rack, using Toolbox 3:

    Note
    Steering rack calibration is only required if the vehicle is equipped with a Bosch type steering rack.
    1. Select the Actions tab and search for "Bosch EPAS Calibration".
    2. Select the ODIN routine PROC_EPAS_X_CALIBRATIONSearch for routine in ToolboxBosch EPAS Calibration, and then click the link of the routine.
    3. Click RUN, and allow the routine to complete.

      After calibrating EPAS, drive the vehicle for a minimum of 5 minutes before returning the vehicle to the customer.
  5. Perform a Lock To Lock-Angle test. See Lock To Lock-Angle Test.
  6. Disconnect the laptop with Toolbox 3 from the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
