Brake Pad Kit - Rear - Mando (Remove and Replace)

Warning

If the vehicle has air suspension, activate "Jack" mode on the touchscreen before raising and supporting the vehicle.

Note

Model S base vehicles built after 16 Nov 2016, have Mando rear integrated parking brake calipers. These use 1 caliper instead of the 2, as is standard on older vehicles.

Note

For replacing brake calipers on Model S base vehicles built before 16 Nov 2016, or any Model S performance vehicle, replace the Brembo calipers (refer to procedure).

Removal

Connect a laptop to the diagnostic port of the vehicle, and then use Toolbox 3 to locally connect to the vehicle. See Toolbox 3 (Connect and Disconnect).
Unlock the vehicle gateway for diagnostic communication. See Gateway Unlock.
Remove the rear underhood apron (refer to procedure).
Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap and place an absorbent material around the opening of the reservoir.

Note
Place suitable absorbent material around the affected area to absorb any possible fluid spillage.

CAUTION
If brake fluid is spilled on a painted surface, wash off immediately with clean water.
Remove the rear wheel. See Wheel Assembly (Remove and Install).
Using Toolbox 3:
1. Select the Actions tab and search for "EPB Service Mode".
2. For Intel based MCUs, select the ODIN routine PROC_EPB_X_SERVICE-MODE, and then click the link of the routine.
3. For Tegra based MCUs, select the ODIN routine PROC_EPB_X_SERVICE-MODE-START, and then click the link of the routine.
4. Click RUN, and allow the routine to complete.
  
  Note
  Press and hold the brake pedal while performing this routine.
  
  CAUTION
  The vehicle may roll freely.
Disconnect the harness from the caliper motor.
Remove the bolts (x2) that attach the caliper to the mounting bracket (torque 26 Nm).
Remove the calipers, and use S-hooks to support them.
Remove the bolt (x1) that attaches the name plate to the caliper (torque 9 Nm).
Remove the brake pads and shims from the bracket.
Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap.

CAUTION
Clean the surrounding area prior to removing the component.

Note
Place suitable absorbent material around the affected area to absorb any possible fluid spillage.
Use the caliper spreader kit or similar tool to gently push the pistons back into the caliper.

Installation

Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the following:

Clean the affected areas before installation.

Use needle-nose pliers to ensure that the slots in the rear brake caliper piston face are at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions.
Thoroughly clean the caliper pad slides and abutments with the disc brake caliper brush (tool part number 1115240-00-A) and soapy water.
CAUTION
If there is rust or pitting on the caliper that cannot be removed with a hand brush, replace the caliper (refer to procedure).
Apply an even layer of Silaramic lubricant (1063021-00-A) to the caliper pad slides. Remove any excess lubricant.
Pump the brake pedal at least 5 times to seat the pads against the brake rotors.
Warning
Always check that the brake pads are seated correctly before driving the vehicle.
Top off the brake fluid level as required.
CAUTION
If brake fluid is spilled on a painted surface, wash off immediately with clean water.
